Chapter 54: Temporary Security Department
Chapter 54: Chapter 54: Temporary Security Department
After finishing his introduction, Cheng Du picked up a palm-sized, diamond-shaped badge. "This is the ’Nexus Core.’ You are all required to carry it with you. It stays connected to the command center through the county’s newly established signal network..."
"It encrypts and transmits your real-time location and vital signs back to us. In an emergency, crushing the outer shell will immediately send a top-priority distress signal and your precise location to the command center and all nearby friendly units."
Qian Cheng then pointed to the area at the back of the hall, where three rows of desks were neatly arranged. Each desk was equipped with communications equipment.
"This is the communications support team assigned to our two commanders. Each team consists of five professionally trained communications specialists..."
"They are responsible for maintaining contact with all field units. They will filter information and handle routine communications in a timely manner. Only the most critical situations will be patched directly to your command channels. This ensures that you won’t be distracted by trivial messages while on the front lines, yet you will still have a grasp of the overall situation."
Lei Dan, sitting in the general commander’s seat, looked over and added, "Captain Yang, Captain Liu, your communications team leaders will be our most senior specialists. They will be your ears and your extension at the command center. If you encounter any problems, you can contact your comms team immediately."
Yang Wenqing picked up the small but crucial ’Nexus Core,’ sensing the sophisticated runic technology contained within. ’I’m even more curious about the upper echelons of this world’s power structure now,’ he thought.
Seeing their expressions, Lei Dan added, "This system will help you maintain control of the overall situation, but frontline command is impossible without capable deputies. During the assessment, things can change in an instant. You’ll need people to help you relay orders, coordinate squads, and handle unexpected events."
He leaned forward slightly, his tone cautionary. "I suggest you go home and get a good night’s rest. Don’t engage in any strenuous training. Maintain peak condition, and check and maintain your sidearms and gear. Most importantly, decide on two trustworthy adjutants as soon as possible. Submit their names to me for the record tomorrow morning."
"Yes!"
Yang Wenqing and Liu Xin responded in unison.
As Yang Wenqing listened to Lei Dan’s words, he immediately had two people in mind: Wu Yan and Liu Rong.
’Wu Yan was experienced and handled matters with seasoned skill. He had also shown sufficient caution during the Zhenyuan Mining investigation and was more than capable of handling great responsibility. Liu Rong, though young, was quick-witted and competent. More importantly, Yang Wenqing knew him inside and out.’
For the next half hour, Yang Wenqing and Liu Xin familiarized themselves with the command post’s various facilities before leaving the emergency center one after the other.
When he returned to the Third Squad’s office, Wu Yan and Liu Rong were chatting by their desks. Yang Wenqing called them over to his own.
"A temporary command post has been established for the annual assessment. I will be serving as deputy commander in charge of the security department," Yang Wenqing said, getting straight to the point. "Commander Lei has required me to appoint two adjutants, and I’ve decided to choose the two of you."
Wu Yan and Liu Rong glanced at each other, both seeing the surprise in the other’s eyes. This was clearly an important opportunity to gain experience.
"Old Wu, you’re experienced. You’ll be responsible for helping me coordinate the patrol squads and handling on-site command during emergencies," Yang Wenqing assigned their roles. "Ah Rong, you’re meticulous. You’ll be primarily responsible for consolidating information and liaising with the command center’s communications team to ensure orders are relayed accurately and promptly."
"Yes, Captain!" the two of them replied, immediately straightening their backs.
"Alright. Both of you head home early tonight and get plenty of rest. Check your gear. We’re going to be busy starting tomorrow morning," Yang Wenqing instructed.
After the two of them left, Yang Wenqing also packed up his things and got off work.
He first went to the branch’s equipment depot to carefully inspect and maintain his sidearm, ensuring every runic component was functioning properly. Afterward, he went to the medical station to pick up some standard emergency-use medicinal pills.
After collecting the pills, Yang Wenqing prepared to head straight home. As he walked out the main gate of the precinct, the afterglow of the setting sun had already dyed the street gold. He instinctively glanced up at the sky, and when his eyes swept across the street, an unconscious smile touched his serious face.
It was his father, Yang Jianmu, squatting on the steps in front of a shop and smoking a long-stemmed pipe. At that moment, Yang Jianmu saw him too. He stood up nimbly, tapped his pipe on the steps, quickly put away his tobacco pouch, and started walking over, picking up a burlap sack that was beside him.
As he stood up, two people who had been beside him immediately followed. It was clear they were father and son. The elder man wore a navy-blue silk long-robe and a small gray cap. His face bore a slight resemblance to Yang Jianmu, but his complexion was fairer and his build was a bit more stout. He was also carrying an exquisite leather suitcase.
Following behind the middle-aged man was a boy of about sixteen or seventeen. The boy was dressed in a brand-new blue student uniform and shiny leather shoes. His face showed a mixture of the unease and curiosity of someone new to the big city, his eyes frequently darting around to look at the tall buildings and the occasional passing Flying Shuttle.
"Dad. Sixth Uncle."
Yang Wenqing quickly crossed the street. The middle-aged man he called Sixth Uncle was named Yang Jianye. In terms of blood relations, his and Yang Jianmu’s great-grandfathers were brothers. The previous generation of his family had made their living in Sanhe Town. By Yang Jianye’s generation, they had opened a general store in town, and their family was much better off than Yang Jianmu’s.
"Off work, Wenqing?" Yang Jianmu’s face broke into a simple smile when he saw his son.
"Dad, I told you last time, if you need something, you can come straight in and find me. Why are you waiting outside again?" Yang Wenqing said softly.
"It’s fine. We haven’t been here long," Yang Jianmu said with a brilliant smile.
"Wenqing, it’s been a while. You’re looking sharper than ever!" Sixth Uncle Yang Jianye greeted him with a smile, gently pulling the boy behind him forward. "Quick, greet him. This is your Brother Wenqing."
The boy quickly took a step forward and bowed nervously. "Brother Wenqing."
"This is your Sixth Uncle’s third son, Yang Wenyuan."
Yang Jianmu introduced from the side.
Yang Wenqing nodded to Yang Wenyuan in acknowledgment. His gaze then fell to the burlap sack at his father’s feet and the leather suitcase in his Sixth Uncle’s hand. He knew at once they had come about the recommendation spot for the Police Academy.
"Dad, Sixth Uncle, this isn’t the place to talk."
Yang Wenqing didn’t invite them to his home in Dongning Community. His small place was ill-suited for guests, and some things weren’t appropriate to discuss at home. "I’ll take you to the precinct’s guest house to get settled in first. Then we can have a simple meal. We can talk about whatever it is over dinner."
"Ah, alright. We’ll do as you say." Yang Jianmu naturally had no objection.
"Sorry to trouble you, Wenqing," Yang Jianye replied with a smile.
Yang Wenqing led the three of them on foot to the nearby internal guest house of the City Defense Precinct. It was a five-story building in a quiet environment, mainly used to host the families of internal personnel or official visitors.
He went to the front desk, presented his badge, and booked a standard room. The room was on the third floor and had a private bathroom and a small balcony. Yang Jianye looked around the room, clearly quite satisfied.
After they settled their luggage, Yang Wenqing took the three of them to the restaurant on the guest house’s first floor. He requested a quiet booth, and after ordering a few home-style dishes, the four of them sat down together.
