I Enslaved The Goddess Who Summoned Me
Chapter 810: The Blue Blade and the Dark Ronin (1)
Nathan and Shiina reappeared far from Minami Kyoto.
The battlefield vanished beneath them in an instant.
No red banners.
No city walls.
No soldiers shouting in fear.
Only an empty field stretched beneath a pale afternoon sky.
The land had once been used for farming, but the crops had long been harvested. Dry stalks covered the ground in uneven patches, bending beneath the wind. Low hills surrounded the field on three sides, and a thin line of forest stood far in the distance.
There were no houses.
No villages.
No civilians.
No one who could be caught between them.
Nathan landed first.
His sandals touched the earth without a sound, though the black magic around him continued to curl through the air like smoke. The force of his arrival still cracked the ground beneath his feet, creating a small circle of broken soil around him.
Shiina landed several paces away.
Blue light faded around her body, but it did not disappear completely. It remained wrapped around her armor and katana like a thin flame. Her helmet concealed most of her face, but Nathan could see her red eyes through its narrow opening.
They were fixed on him.
For a long moment, neither moved.
The only sound was the wind traveling across the empty field.
Nathan’s hand rested around Kyomei’s hilt.
Shiina held her blue katana before her with both hands.
There had been a time when standing this close to her had felt different.
He remembered the ruined shrine in Death God Valley. He remembered the firelight on her face, the quiet words they had exchanged when the rest of the world seemed far away. Even then, they had known their paths would lead them here eventually.
They had both understood it.
But neither had truly wanted it.
"You chose a place with no one around," Shiina said.
Nathan did not answer immediately.
"No one needs to get hurt."
Shiina’s gaze lowered for the briefest moment.
Then she tightened her grip around her katana.
"That is why you should leave."
"Nobody can leave Norihiro’s rule behind while he is alive."
Her eyes hardened.
"You know nothing about him."
"I know enough."
"You know what people say about him," Shiina replied. "You know what his enemies tell you. You know what the shinobi want you to believe. But you do not know the man who saved my life."
Nathan’s expression remained calm.
"He saved you. That does not erase what he has done to everyone else."
Shiina said nothing.
Blue magic slowly gathered around her feet.
Nathan could see that his words had struck something inside her. But he did not expect her to surrender because of them. Shiina had built her entire life around the debt she believed she owed Norihiro.
To her, he had not been a Daimyo.
He had been the man who reached out when no one else did.
The man who gave her purpose.
The man who gave her a sword, a place, and a reason to keep living.
Nathan understood loyalty.
He understood it better than most.
That was why he knew words would never be enough.
"Ryo," Shiina said quietly.
Nathan looked at her.
"If you still care for me even a little," she continued, "then stop trying to make me choose between you and him."
Nathan’s hand tightened around Kyomei.
"I am not making you choose."
Shiina’s eyes narrowed.
"You are."
"No." Nathan’s voice became firmer. "Norihiro chose this when he built his power on fear. When he prepared a demon shrine beneath Minami Kyoto. When he decided the people under him were tools to use instead of lives to protect."
Shiina froze slightly.
For the first time, uncertainty appeared in her expression.
Nathan saw it.
"You knew about the shrine," he said.
Shiina’s silence answered him.
"You knew Norihiro was preparing something."
"I knew he had secrets."
"That is not the same thing."
Her fingers tightened around the katana.
"He has always had enemies. He needed power to defend the South."
"Power from a Kijin shrine?"
Shiina did not answer.
The blue light surrounding her began to tremble.
Nathan’s eyes darkened.
"Mitsuhide thought he could control that power too," he said. "Look what it turned him into."
"Norihiro is not Mitsuhide."
"No," Nathan replied. "He is worse. Mitsuhide was desperate. Norihiro is patient."
The words struck harder than Nathan intended.
Shiina’s red eyes flashed.
"Do not speak about him as though you understand him."
"Then show me that I am wrong."
For a second, the field became completely still.
Then Shiina moved.
Blue light burst beneath her feet.
She crossed the distance between them before the sound reached Nathan.
Her katana cut toward his neck.
Nathan drew Kyomei.
CLANG!
The two blades collided.
A violent shockwave burst across the field.
The dry grass flattened beneath the force. Dirt and broken stalks rose into the air. The nearest trees at the edge of the field shook hard enough to send birds flying from their branches.
Nathan and Shiina remained still for one heartbeat.
Their blades pressed together.
Then Shiina twisted her wrist.
The blue katana slipped along Kyomei’s edge, changing the angle of the clash. Rather than trying to overpower him, she redirected his sword downward and turned sharply to his side.
Nathan moved back just as her second strike cut through the place where his ribs had been.
The blue blade sliced the air with a thin, dangerous sound.
Shiina did not stop.
She stepped forward again.
One strike toward his shoulder.
Another toward his leg.
A third thrust aimed directly at his chest.
Nathan blocked each blow with Kyomei.
CLANG!
CLANG!
CLANG!
Every clash sent another burst of wind through the empty field.
Nathan had fought powerful swordsmen before.
He had fought men with more physical strength, greater magical power, and enough brutality to scare entire armies. But Shiina was different. Her strength did not come from overwhelming force.
It came from precision.
She seemed to know where Kyomei would be before Nathan moved it. Each time he attempted to counterattack, her blade was already in the right position to turn it aside. She did not waste a single step. She did not let her balance shift too far in any direction.
Her katana became an extension of her body.
No.
It was more than that.
It was as though she and the blade were sharing one mind.
Nathan stepped backward as Shiina’s katana cut toward him again.
He caught the strike with Kyomei, but Shiina used the contact to pivot around him. Her foot swept toward his ankle while her sword moved toward the gap beneath his arm.
Nathan jumped back.
The tip of her katana grazed his sleeve.
A thin line of blood appeared along his side.
Shiina landed several paces away.
Nathan looked down at the cut.
Then back at her.
Shiina’s breathing had not changed.
"You are holding back," she said.
Nathan’s eyes narrowed.
"So are you."
A faint smile touched her lips behind the helmet.
"You noticed."
Nathan raised Kyomei again.
Shiina was a genius.
There was no other word for it.
Her ancestor’s name carried weight across Kastoria. Miyamoto Musashi had become a legend not simply because he won duels, but because he understood swords in a way other people understood breathing. His techniques had been studied for generations. Warriors spoke of his battles as though they were lessons handed down by the gods.
Shiina carried that blood.
But blood alone could not make someone this skilled.
She had trained.
She had fought.
She had bled.
And somewhere along the way, she had become a swordswoman who could turn a battlefield into her own world.
Nathan stepped forward.
This time, he attacked first.
Kyomei moved in a dark arc toward Shiina’s shoulder.
Shiina raised her katana and blocked.
Nathan shifted his weight immediately, turning the strike into a low cut toward her legs.
Shiina jumped.
Nathan followed.
Dark magic rose beneath his feet and pushed him upward with her.
They clashed in midair.
BAAAADOOM!
The impact cracked the air.
Shiina spun away through the sky, blue energy catching her before she fell. Nathan landed first, sliding several meters across the field before stopping.
Shiina came down lightly in front of him.
Nathan did not give her time to settle.
Dark power gathered along Kyomei.
The black aura around the blade deepened until it looked as though the sword had begun swallowing the sunlight around it.
Shiina’s red eyes widened slightly.
"Ryo—"
He swung.
A crescent of dark energy tore across the field.
The attack ripped through the dry ground, leaving a wide scar behind it as it rushed toward Shiina.
Shiina raised her katana.
Blue light exploded around her.
She slashed downward.
A blue wave of energy met Nathan’s dark crescent in the center of the field.
For one second, the two powers struggled against each other.
Then they collided.
BOOOOOOM!
The explosion shook the hills.
Earth rose high into the sky. The shockwave tore through the field and bent the distant trees away from the impact. A flock of birds fled from the forest, scattering across the sky in panic.
Nathan emerged from the cloud of dust first.
He moved forward through the darkness, his sword already raised.
Shiina met him.
Their blades collided again.
Then again.
Then again.
Their movements became too fast for an ordinary person to follow.
Nathan struck from above.
Shiina blocked.
Shiina cut toward his side.
Nathan turned and caught the blade.
Nathan thrust forward.
Shiina shifted her body just enough for Kyomei to pass beside her shoulder.
The blue katana came down toward his wrist.
Nathan pulled back before the edge could cut through it.
They moved across the field in bursts of black and blue.
Each time their swords met, a shockwave spread outward.
The ground around them broke apart.
A shallow trench appeared where Nathan’s dark energy struck too close to the earth. Frost covered the grass where Shiina’s power traveled. Dust, ice, and black smoke mixed in the air.
Nathan drove Shiina backward.
For the first time, she had to retreat quickly.
He swung Kyomei from the right.
Shiina blocked.
The strength behind the blow pushed her several steps through the soil.
Nathan struck again.
She turned the blade aside.
He attacked once more.
Shiina ducked beneath Kyomei, moving so close that the edge of Nathan’s sleeve brushed against her armor. Her katana moved toward his chest.
Nathan caught her wrist.
Shiina’s eyes widened.
For one moment, they stood almost against one another.
Nathan’s hand held her wrist tightly.
Shiina’s blue katana had stopped a few inches from his chest.
Kyomei rested near her neck.
Neither could move without the other striking first.
The moment felt strangely familiar.
Too close.
Too quiet.
Shiina looked up at him through her helmet.
"You still hesitate," she whispered.
Nathan’s grip tightened slightly.
"So do you."
Shiina’s expression hardened.
Then blue magic erupted from her body.
Nathan was forced backward as a blast of power tore them apart.
Shiina spun through the air and landed at the far end of the field. Her feet slid across the ground, leaving two narrow trails through the dirt.
Nathan recovered almost immediately.
But he did not attack.
The cut along his side had deepened slightly.
Blood ran beneath his kimono.
Shiina saw it.
"You are still poisoned," she said.
"It will not stop me."
"You should not be fighting at all."
Nathan gave a humorless smile behind the mask.
"And you should not be fighting for Norihiro."
The blue aura around Shiina flared again.
Her helmet suddenly cracked.
A thin line appeared across its front where Kyomei’s dark energy had struck earlier.
Shiina reached up and removed it.
She threw it aside.
The helmet hit the ground and rolled through the dry grass.
Her long dark blue hair fell free around her shoulders.
Now Nathan could see her face clearly.
Her red eyes were no longer teasing.
They were sad.
And determined.
"I do not want you to die, Ryo," Shiina said.
"Then move."
"I cannot."
"Nobody is forcing you to stand here."
Shiina’s expression shook for only a moment.
"You do not understand."
"Then explain it."
She looked away.
The wind moved through the empty field, lifting strands of her hair.
For several seconds, Nathan thought she might answer.
That she might finally tell him what Norihiro had done for her. Why she believed she owed him a loyalty stronger than her own life. Why a woman as intelligent and capable as Shiina had chosen to stand beside a man who was preparing to use the power of a demon shrine.
But when she looked back, her eyes had become cold again.
"I cannot explain something you have already decided to hate."
Nathan’s dark aura rose.
"I do not hate you."
Shiina gave a sad smile.
"That is why this is difficult."
Then she raised her katana.
Blue magic began gathering around her again, but this time it was different.
The energy did not explode outward wildly.
It condensed.
It flowed around her blade in controlled layers, becoming sharper and brighter with every passing second. The ground beneath her feet froze in a widening circle. Frost climbed over the dry grass. The air around her turned cold enough for Nathan to see his breath.
Nathan watched closely.
He had seen magic used through strength.
He had seen it used through anger.
Shiina used it like a swordsman.
Every piece of power was being guided.
Measured.
Placed exactly where she wanted it.
Nathan understood at once.
She had stopped testing him.
"You are finally serious," he said.
Shiina’s red eyes did not leave his.
"So should you be."
Nathan lowered his stance.
Darkness gathered around Kyomei.
The black aura rose higher than before, spreading across the field like a living shadow. The sun above them seemed to dim as the power grew, its light swallowed by the darkness curling around Nathan’s body.
The field shook.
Frost spread from Shiina’s feet.
Black cracks spread from Nathan’s.
Blue and dark power began pressing against one another before either of them moved.
The air between them twisted.
Far away, thunder rolled across a clear sky.
Shiina inhaled slowly.
"Niten Ichi."
Nathan’s eyes narrowed.
She lifted her free hand.
Blue magic formed beside her.
Not a spell.
Not merely energy.
A second weapon appeared.
A shorter blade made of condensed blue light took shape in her left hand, its edge gleaming like winter moonlight.
Nathan’s expression changed.
Miyamoto Musashi’s legendary two-sword style.
Shiina held her katana in her right hand.
The blue short blade in her left.
Her stance shifted.
And suddenly, even before she moved, Nathan felt the difference.
The air around her became dangerous.
Not because her magic was louder.
But because every possible direction of attack now seemed open.
Shiina gave him one final look.
"Do not hold back, Ryo."
Then she disappeared.
