Chapter 215: Closing the Gates

  • Next Chapter

The Goliath was still dissolving when the glow appeared.

A Platinum Chest spawned above the ash pile that had once been a forty-ton behemoth. It hovered in the air, spinning slowly.

Holden grabbed it before the glow could spread, and the chest dissolved into his System Inventory.

[Platinum Chest Acquired!]

[Stored in System Inventory.]

He turned toward the rift.

The column of purple energy rose from a crack in the earth. Something had split the ground open from below, and dark energy poured upward from the opening in a steady, pulsing stream.

The air was wrong here. The Miasma was so thick that Holden could see it, a faint purple haze clinging to the ground and swirling in slow patterns around the rift’s base. Every breath was a struggle between his Aether-Steel lungs and the corruption in the air. The Blood-Amber Ring pulsed steadily, sealing the tiny wounds that formed, healed, and formed again with every inhale.

Tss. Tss. Tss.

His 10,000x processor mapped the rift’s structure. The energy column wasn’t just a geyser. It was a conduit, a spatial bridge between the mortal world and the Abyssal Realm. An anchor point buried somewhere inside the crack was keeping it open.

The anchor was the source.

The column was only the result.

Destroy the anchor, and the conduit would collapse. The rift would close.

Holden had done something similar at the Demon Mouth Outpost. That portal had been powered by a floating crystal anchor. He had shattered it with his sword, causing the entire dimension to collapse.

This was different.

The anchor here wasn’t floating in the air. It was buried beneath the ground, protected by layers of dark energy that pulsed in time with the column above.

His processor calculated the safest approach. The Miasma concentration at the rift’s center was three times higher than in the surrounding wasteland. Even his Aether-Steel body would take damage, and although the Blood-Amber Ring could compensate, the healing would have to remain constant.

Holden summoned his sword.

The Solar-Forged blade appeared in his hand, its golden light pushing back the purple haze. He gripped it with both hands and began channeling energy into the steel.

The sword didn’t simply ignite.

It became fire.

The steel turned into white-hot light, forming a pillar of concentrated heat that made the air around it scream.

Tssssssss.

Holden walked toward the rift.

The Miasma hit him like a wall. The purple haze thickened around his body, trying to eat through the Phantom-Weave Armor. The armor’s wards flared and pushed back the corruption, buying him time. The Blood-Amber Ring pulsed faster, sealing the damage as it appeared.

His boots reached the edge of the crack. The corrupted stone crumbled beneath them.

Holden looked down.

The anchor was visible twenty feet below the surface, buried inside a nest of dark energy veins.

He raised the blade and drove it into the opening.

The sword entered the crack like a spear striking water. The white-hot steel met the rift’s dark energy, and the reaction was immediate.

Violent.

Catastrophic.

The two energies didn’t simply clash. They annihilated each other. Wherever the fire touched the darkness, both forces ceased to exist. A blinding white flash burst from the contact point, turning the purple haze into grey smoke.

The ground shook.

The crack widened.

CRACK!

The sword reached the anchor.

The sphere of condensed corruption met the concentrated heat of the Solar-Forged blade, and the two forces tore each other apart. The anchor didn’t melt. It shattered.

The surface of the sphere broke into a thousand fragments.

The rift screamed.

It wasn’t a sound. It was a sensation, a vibration that passed through the ground, the air, Holden’s body, and his bones. The spatial bridge between the mortal world and the Abyssal Realm began to tear apart as the anchor that sustained it broke into pieces.

The purple column flickered. Its steady rhythm stuttered, skipped, and finally stopped.

The dark energy that had been rising from the crack for weeks, pouring Miasma into the atmosphere, spawning monsters, and feeding the corruption across the continent, collapsed inward.

The energy pulled back into the crack. The last traces of the spatial bridge vanished like water being sucked down a drain.

Then the crack closed.

BOOM!

CRASH!

Shhhhhhk.

The purple haze dissolved. The Miasma that had clung to the ground and swirled around the rift simply ceased to exist. Without the rift to sustain it, the corruption had no source.

It evaporated, leaving behind clean air.

Holden pulled his sword from the closed crack. The blade still glowed faintly orange, but the white-hot intensity was fading. The steel cooled, and the fire died.

He stood in the rain.

Alone.

The rift was gone. The column was gone. The Goliath was gone.

His earpiece crackled.

"Holden." Maeve’s voice came through the channel. "The satellite feed is showing a complete energy collapse at your position. The rift signature is gone. It’s closed."

"Copy."

"The Miasma concentration in the surrounding area is already dropping. Atmospheric models suggest the local corruption will dissipate within seventy-two hours. The rift is sealed."

"Good."

"Holden."

"Yeah?"

"Come back."

He turned and walked toward the ridge, where Cora and Sera were waiting.

The military base was quiet when they returned.

The rain had eased to a drizzle. Soldiers on the walls watched the three figures emerge from No-Man’s Land, but nobody challenged them. They simply stood there with the tired, numb expressions of people who had seen too much in too few days.

Cora and Sera separated from the group at the officer barracks.

Holden continued to his room and stepped inside.

The place was still wrecked. The walls were cracked, the floor was split, and broken glass covered one corner. The lamp was dead, leaving the window as the only source of light.

He sat on the edge of the bed and opened his System Inventory.

The Platinum Chest was waiting inside.

Holden pressed his thumb against the seal.

Shhhhk. Click.

Deep blue light spilled from the chest. It was the color of midnight, shadows, and the space between stars.

Inside was a book bound in dark leather. The cover was cool to the touch and completely blank. There was no title or insignia, only smooth leather that seemed to absorb the light around it.

[Item Acquired: Rank 3 Void-Step Manual]

[Type: Skill Upgrade Scroll]

[Rank: 3]

[Effect: Permanently upgrades Gale-Step to Void-Step.]

[Void-Step: Spatial displacement technique. The user dissolves into shadow and instantly reappears at a targeted shadow within line of sight. Maximum range: 50 meters. Cooldown: None. Cost: Minimal energy.]

[Requirements: Rank 3 cultivation. Gale-Step at Ultimate tier.]

[Description: An ancient spatial movement technique that transcends physical speed. The user does not move from point A to point B. They cease to exist at point A and begin to exist at point B. True teleportation through the shadow plane.]

Holden read the description twice.

Teleportation.

Not enhanced speed. Not the 10,000x processor slowing the world around him so he could move between heartbeats.

Actual teleportation.

He would cease to exist in one location and begin to exist in another.

Gale-Step was fast.

Void-Step was instant.

Holden opened the manual.

The pages were filled with spatial formulas, energy diagrams, and cultivation patterns that explained the connection between the physical world and the shadow plane. The text was written in an old dialect, but his 10,000x processor translated it in real time.

He read the entire book in four seconds.

The knowledge settled into his mind like water soaking into sand. Every formula, diagram, and principle was filed and integrated into his existing movement skill.

Gale-Step wasn’t being replaced. It was evolving.

The foundation of Ultimate-tier speed that Gale-Step had built was the prerequisite for Void-Step. The new skill used the same neural pathways, energy channels, and cultivation structure. It simply pushed them further, into a dimension Gale-Step could never reach.

[Gale-Step has been upgraded!]

[New Skill: Void-Step (Beginner)]

[Type: Spatial Displacement]

[Rank: 3]

[Range: 50 meters]

[Cooldown: None]

[Mastery Level: Beginner]

[Skill Mastery Path: Beginner -> Master -> Perfect -> Ultimate -> Transcendent]

Holden closed the book and placed it on the bed beside him. He looked down at his hands, at the Aether-Steel fingers that had just absorbed the knowledge of a technique capable of carrying him through shadows.

"Okay," he said. "That is my new favorite thing."

He stood and walked to the window.

The battlefield stretched below him. No-Man’s Land was still churned and muddy. The fortress walls were damaged but standing. The eastern ridge marked the place where the rift had been.

Now, there was nothing there but rain, mud, and clean air.

One rift closed.

One.

Maeve’s satellite data had identified at least seven more active rifts across the eastern corridor. Each one was feeding monsters into the world. Each one was guarded by a Rank 3 boss. Each one was a source of the corruption eating away at the continent.

Holden pulled up his System interface and opened the Direct Breakthrough menu.

[Rank 3, 7-Star to Rank 3, 8-Star: 700,000 KP]

He stared at the eastern horizon, where the purple stain of Abyssal corruption still pressed against the sky.

Seven rifts.

Seven bosses.

Seven armies of monsters between him and the next step.

A smile slowly spread across his face.

It wasn’t the warm one or the sarcastic one.

It was the cold one, the kind that appeared when the math was terrible and he didn’t care.

The war was just getting started.
