I Evolve 10,000 Times Faster
Chapter 219: Blood-Rune Box
The outpost had gone quiet.
It was the kind of quiet that existed between explosions, when the ears were still ringing and the body hadn’t accepted that the fighting was over. Soldiers sat along the walls, too tired to move but too wired to sleep. Medics moved between the wounded, their hands steady and their faces blank from exhaustion.
Holden sat in his room. The door had been repaired, though the walls were still cracked from the 7-Star breakthrough. Maintenance crews had patched the worst of the damage with fresh concrete that didn’t match the old stone.
He pulled up his System interface.
[Current KP: 1,320,290]
[Multiplier: 10,000x]
[KP Booster: 2x Active]
The number glowed steadily in his vision. It was the result of weeks of relentless farming, from the artillery mission and rift closure to patrol kills, the massive horde defense, and the Nightmare Dungeon runs he had squeezed in between operations.
His 10,000x processor ran the numbers automatically.
8-Star upgrade cost: 700,000 KP.
Current balance: 1,320,290 KP.
Remaining after upgrade: 620,290 KP.
He could afford it easily. One button press would take him another step toward Rank 4, another step toward the power that might have saved Vespera.
His finger hovered over the confirm button.
He didn’t press it.
The 10,000x processor analyzed the decision from every angle. Every calculation came back with the same recommendation.
Wait.
He had broken through from 2-Star to 6-Star in a single night, then from 6-Star to 7-Star in a Nightmare Dungeon. Two major breakthroughs in less than a week. Each one had expanded his meridians, densified his Aether-Steel, and pushed his body closer to its structural limit.
His body could handle it. The Aether-Steel reinforcement was designed to scale. The Star Core Elixir kept his energy reserves stable, while the Phantom-Weave Armor helped regulate the physical strain. His body was a machine, and the machine could take the punishment.
But cultivation wasn’t just about the body. It was about the foundation. The energy center holding his cultivation together was like a cup being filled with water. Each breakthrough made the cup bigger, but the water still needed time to settle, stabilize, and find its natural level before the cup could be expanded again.
He had expanded that cup twice in one week. The water was still settling. His energy was still finding its balance. Another forced breakthrough this soon could destabilize the foundation. Not immediately, but subtly, in the way that mattered most.
The processor estimated a twelve percent chance of foundation instability if he broke through again within forty-eight hours. Twelve percent was low, but it wasn’t zero. It wasn’t low enough.
He would wait. Let the 7-Star foundation settle. Allow the energy stabilize. Then he would buy the 8-Star upgrade.
It was the mature decision. The calculated one.
Holden closed the breakthrough menu and sat in the quiet room, staring at the wall.
A knock came.
Not on his door. On the window. The knock pattern Cora and Sera used to identify themselves.
He opened it. The Twins were crouched on the ledge, squeezed into the narrow space between the window frame and the wall. Their dark armor blended into the shadows, and their faces were serious.
"Master Voss," Cora said.
"Come in."
Cora was carrying something.
A small iron box, about the size of a thick book. Blood-runes covered its surface, complex symbols carved into the metal and filled with something that had dried to a dark, rusty brown.
Blood had been used as a sealing medium for the runic locks. The technique was ancient, the kind of sealing magic that had existed when the world itself was still young.
"Where did you get that?" Holden asked.
"From Instructor Vespera," Sera said. Her voice was quiet and controlled. The grief was still there underneath, but she had learned to keep it in check.
"She gave it to us four months ago," Cora added. "Before the National Tournament. Before everything. She called us into her office alone. It was midnight. She was sitting at her desk with this box in front of her."
"She told us to keep it hidden," Sera continued. "To never open it and never tell anyone it existed. Unless she died."
"She made us swear," Cora said. "On our blades. On our blood. We promised we would hold onto this box until the day she died, then bring it to you."
Holden studied the box, his eyes fixed on the blood-runes.
"She knew," he said.
"We don’t know what she knew," Sera replied. "She didn’t explain. She only said, ’If I die, give this to Voss. He’ll know what to do with it.’"
Holden reached for the box. The blood-runes pulsed faintly beneath his fingers, a subtle vibration that his 10,000x processor immediately identified as active runic energy. The seals weren’t just locks. They were alive, maintaining themselves while waiting for the correct key.
The key was energy. Specific energy. The runes were keyed to a particular energy signature, a frequency that would unlock the blood-seals and allow the box to open.
His processor analyzed the runes. The patterns were complex, layered, and tightly connected, but the energy signature was clear. It matched the cultivation energy Holden had developed through his forced breakthroughs.
Asura energy.
He pushed a thread of it into the box.
The blood-runes lit up one by one. Each rune flared deep red, pulsed once, then faded. The sequence moved across the surface like a chain of firecrackers, each rune triggering the next as the seals released in order.
Click. Click. Click. Click. Click.
The final rune flared. A seam appeared along the box that hadn’t been visible before, and the two halves slowly separated with a soft hiss.
Shhhhk.
Inside were two items.
The first was a journal. Leather-bound and old, with worn leather and a spine bent from years of use. The cover was blank, but the edges of the pages were thick with notes, diagrams, and annotations that had bled through the paper.
The second was a map. A hand-drawn map of the continent rendered in ink. Several markers had been placed at specific locations, each one circled in red and numbered.
Holden took out the journal and opened it.
The handwriting belonged to Vespera. He recognized it immediately. It was the same script that had appeared on his training evaluations, mission briefings, and promotion orders.
He read the first page.
"If you are reading this, I am dead. The box was sealed with my blood and keyed to the energy signature of my chosen successor. If it opened for you, then you are the one I trusted. Read carefully. There is no second copy."
He turned the page.
"The Abyssal Incursion is not a natural phenomenon. The rifts, the Miasma, the corrupted creatures, none of it is natural. It was engineered. Designed. Unleashed on purpose by a group of rogue cultivators who call themselves the Eclipse Syndicate."
Holden’s 10,000x processor flagged the name and immediately cross-referenced it against every database, record, and intelligence file he could access through the System. Nothing. The name didn’t appear in any public record or academy archive.
"The Eclipse Syndicate is a cabal of rogue Rank 4 cultivators. Former masters. Former defenders of the kingdom who turned against it. Their motivation is unknown. They designed the first Abyssal Incursion fifteen years ago. The rift that shattered my core. They have been working in secret ever since, weakening the kingdom, corrupting the nobility, and destabilizing the government."
Holden turned the page. The map slipped free and unfolded across his lap.
"The red circles on the map mark the known locations of Eclipse Syndicate operatives. Each one is a Rank 4 cultivator, hidden behind false identities, political alliances, and mercenary contracts. They are not soldiers. They are spiders. They sit at the center of webs that stretch across the continent."
His eyes moved across the map, taking in the red circles and the numbers beside them.
Seven circles. Seven operatives. Seven Rank 4 cultivators hidden across the continent.
He read the names beside each number.
Lord Vandiba. Rank 4, 1-Star. Poison and shadow specialist. Location: Ruins of Oakhaven, eastern border.
Lady Serith. Rank 4, 2-Star. Mind manipulation and illusion. Location: Unknown. Last seen in the Capital.
Master Korr. Rank 4, 1-Star. Earth and metal manipulation. Location: Iron-Blood Empire, western frontier.
The Whisperer. Rank 4, 3-Star. Identity unknown. Abilities unknown. Location: Mobile.
Lord Draven. Rank 4, 1-Star. Blood and decay. Location: Southern Wastes.
Commander Zahn. Rank 4, 2-Star. Military tactics and command. Location: Former Royal Army, status unknown.
The Architect. Rank 4, 4-Star. Identity unknown. Leader of the Syndicate. Location: The Abyssal Epicenter.
Seven Rank 4 cultivators. Together, they had designed a war that was eating away at an entire continent.
He turned to the next page.
Vespera’s handwriting had changed. The letters were smaller, and the ink had been pressed harder into the paper, leaving indentations that Holden could feel beneath his fingertips. She had been afraid when she wrote this part.
"WARNING: If I am dead, they will come for my disciples next. The Eclipse Syndicate does not leave loose ends. My students, my associates, anyone connected to me through training or loyalty, will be targeted. The Twins are the most vulnerable. They carry my training, my methods, my techniques. The Syndicate will want them dead to erase my legacy."
Holden looked at Cora and Sera.
They stood beside the window, their faces carefully composed, their eyes fixed on the journal. Both had read the warning over his shoulder. They knew exactly what it said.
The journal continued.
"The Syndicate will send assassins. Rank 3 and Rank 4 operatives with specific orders to eliminate my lineage. They will be patient. They will wait until their targets are isolated, vulnerable, and unaware."
Holden closed the journal.
His 10,000x processor was already running through the implications.
Seven Rank 4 cultivators. Seven enemies who had designed a war, killed his mentor, and were now preparing to eliminate the people she had left behind.
He couldn’t fight a Rank 4 head-on. Not yet. Not until he reached Rank 4 himself. But he didn’t need to fight them head-on. He had Void-Step. He had the Void Mantle. He had a 10,000x processor capable of mapping blind spots, calculating timing windows, and identifying weaknesses even Rank 4 cultivators might not notice.
And he had the Twins. Two of Vespera’s most dangerous weapons, now sworn to his service, carrying the techniques and knowledge the Syndicate wanted erased.
Holden looked at Cora and Sera.
They looked back. Their faces remained composed.
"Master Voss," Cora said. "What are your orders?"
His eyes returned to the journal, then to the map and the seven red circles.
Vespera had spent years building this list. Years of secret investigations, covert operations, and intelligence gathering, all compiled into a blood-sealed box that she had entrusted to two orphans she had raised from the gutter.
To him.
She had known she was going to die. Maybe not how or when, but she had known the war she was fighting would eventually catch up with her. So she had prepared for it, leaving him the tools he needed to finish what she had started.
The hunted had become the hunter.
Holden looked at the Twins.
"Pack your gear," he said.
"Yes, Master Voss," Cora replied.
"Where are we going, Master Voss?" Sera asked.
Holden looked toward the window. On the eastern horizon, the purple stain of Abyssal corruption pressed against the clouds.
"We’re going on a road trip," he said. "We’re going to hunt Vespera’s killers."
