Chapter 213: Chapter 116: I Have No Opinion, I’ll Listen to You

He held the child with one arm and used his other hand to wipe away Jiang Wanyi’s tears.

"WAHHH..."

What often breaks a person isn’t a heartless blade, but unexpected tenderness—a flicker of light in a moment of despair and helplessness.

Without a doubt, Chen Yuan was that light.

Hugging Chen Yuan, Jiang Wanyi cried even harder.

She didn’t want to cry. She wanted to stay strong in front of Chen Yuan, to be the one supporting him.

But at every critical moment, she was the one who needed to be propped up.

Chen Yuan didn’t speak, just gently patted Jiang Wanyi’s back, trying to calm her down.

In all other matters, Jiang Wanyi was strong. But when it came to her child, she was a vulnerable and helpless mother.

This was her own flesh and blood. It was the first time she had encountered a situation like this, so of course she didn’t know what to do.

"It’s okay. She’ll get better soon. Don’t be scared..."

"Okay."

Sniffling, Jiang Wanyi wiped her tears.

With Chen Yuan here, she truly wasn’t afraid of anything anymore.

Chen Yuan shifted his position and leaned against the headboard, and Jiang Wanyi placed a pillow behind him.

He sat up, holding the baby, while Jiang Wanyi sat beside him, looking at the child with a pained expression.

"Are you tired? Let me hold her for a bit."

"I’m fine," Chen Yuan said with a smile.

"Didn’t the doctor say I have a lot of energy? This is a good way to burn some of it off."

"How can you still be joking at a time like this?"

Jiang Wanyi couldn’t help but laugh, and the gloom in her heart lessened considerably.

"Were you already asleep? Did I wake you?"

"You have the nerve to ask."

"What’s wrong?"

"If you hadn’t lied to me, I would have come over tonight and could have dealt with this sooner."

"I just wanted you to get more rest. It hurts me to see you so exhausted."

The room was dimly lit by the small night light.

Their eyes met, and the atmosphere grew subtle.

Chen Yuan pulled the blanket over and covered Jiang Wanyi’s chest.

"Cover up. The baby’s sick; I’m in no mood to look at that right now."

She glanced down at her nightgown.

At home with just the baby, she dressed more freely. It was a red V-neck slip dress, and she wasn’t wearing anything underneath. She had been so preoccupied with the baby that she had completely forgotten.

"You’re so annoying."

The two of them sat leaning against each other, and Jiang Wanyi’s head unconsciously came to rest on Chen Yuan’s shoulder.

Time flowed by silently, like a trickling stream.

Chen Yuan gently placed his hand on the baby’s forehead.

"I think she’s not as hot anymore. Where’s the thermometer gun?"

Jiang Wanyi grabbed the thermometer gun from the headboard and took a reading. 37.8.

"Her temperature is coming down."

"It should return to normal in a little while. We should be fine until morning."

"Straighten out the bed. I’ll put the baby down so she can sleep more comfortably."

"Okay."

Chen Yuan gently lifted the baby while Jiang Wanyi straightened the bedsheets.

"I’ll put the baby to sleep. You can go to the guest room."

"I wouldn’t be able to sleep anyway. Let’s just sleep sideways and squeeze in together."

"Alright."

Chen Yuan placed the baby between them. Mili’s breathing was no longer as heavy as before; she was doing much better. The weight on Jiang Wanyi’s heart finally began to lift.

Still worried, she checked again. 37.4.

The fever was breaking faster than she had expected.

After settling Mili down, the baby slept between them.

"What do we do after sunrise?"

"We’ll give her some Motrin or Tylenol," Chen Yuan said.

"These fever reducers usually only last for about four hours, so you have to repeat the dose. But remember, you can’t give the same medicine consecutively. You have to alternate them."

"I know, but getting her to take it is the real problem."

"That’s why I bought fever-reducing suppositories. There aren’t many restrictions on this medicine, so you can use it repeatedly. But it’s still best to alternate between different types, or the effect will diminish," Chen Yuan said.

"For tonight, this will do. When the fever spikes again during the day, we’ll give her some medicine and combine it with a sponge bath to bring her temperature down."

"Okay."

Mili was asleep, her breathing less labored.

But the one who truly put Jiang Wanyi’s mind at ease was Chen Yuan.

No matter what problem arose with the child, he always had a solution.

When you were at a complete loss, not knowing what to do, he could always come up with a way to fix it.

He would never say something like, ’I don’t know what to do either.’

Recalling the image of him, drenched in sweat and holding the medicine, Jiang Wanyi knew with deep certainty that she had someone to rely on.

No matter when, as long as she needed him, he would appear before her.

Before she knew it, Jiang Wanyi had fallen asleep. When she woke again, she heard Mili crying. A glance at the time showed it was already past six in the morning.

WAAH WAAH WAAH—

She hadn’t slept deeply all night, and her brain felt a bit fried when she got up.

But Chen Yuan was already sitting up in bed, holding the baby. Beside him was a small, translucent measuring cup containing pink medicine.

"Go back to sleep for a bit."

"I can’t. I won’t be able to fall back asleep anyway. I’ll go make some baby food for her, and you need to eat breakfast too."

"Don’t make anything yet. I want to take her to get her blood drawn," Chen Yuan said.

"My treatment methods are all based on experience. It’s better to be safe than sorry. A blood test will give us both peace of mind."

"Okay, I’ll listen to you."

Jiang Wanyi got out of bed, found a hair clip, and tied her hair up behind her head. Then she handed her phone to Chen Yuan.

"You make the appointment first. I can’t think straight right now. Just decide for me what needs to be done."

"You’re her mother. You have to be the one to decide some things."

"It just sounds like you’re trying to avoid responsibility," Jiang Wanyi grumbled reproachfully.

"When everything’s fine, you have my daughter call you ’daddy’ all day long. But now that there’s a problem, you want me to make the decisions. Who does that? You just want all the perks without any of the responsibility."

"You’re really wronging me," Chen Yuan said with a laugh.

"I’ve only touched the child. I haven’t touched her mother at all, so how am I avoiding responsibility?"

"I don’t care. From now on, you’re in charge of anything related to the baby. You decide what we need to do," Jiang Wanyi said.

"I’m just a woman. What kind of decisions can you expect me to make at a time like this? The child’s ’daddy’ can’t just be a title in name only. From now on, whatever you say, goes. I’ll listen to you."

"I’d like some porridge for breakfast."

"Fine, I’ll go make it for you right now."

After fixing her hair, Jiang Wanyi didn’t leave right away. She helped Chen Yuan give the baby her medicine.

"What was her temperature when she woke up?"

"38.6. Not as high as yesterday."

It was clear that the expression on Jiang Wanyi’s face wasn’t as tense as it was yesterday. She wasn’t expecting an instant recovery; as long as the symptoms were easing, that was enough.

"I’ll go start on the food. I’ll leave you to comfort her for a bit."

"Didn’t you say it? This is a daddy’s responsibility. It’s what I should be doing. It’s no trouble at all."

"Mhm."

Jiang Wanyi went to the kitchen, her heart a mess of contradictions.

’When Mili is healthy, I want Chen Yuan to be her father, to share in her joy.’

’I’m even willing to take care of him the way I take care of her.’

’But when I need him to make sacrifices, I can’t bring myself to see him as her father.’

’I feel like she’s my child, and I should be the one to bear all the hardships.’

’I can’t shake this feeling, and it makes me feel so conflicted.’

’But right now, I don’t have a better way. I’m an incompetent mother who has to run to Chen Yuan for help with every little problem. I have no choice but to trouble him.’
