Chapter 237: Chapter 127: The Invisible Barrier
"Daddy’s finished eating too. Let’s go play."
Seeing that Chen Yuan had eaten two full bowls of rice, Jiang Wanyi let him be. Otherwise, she would have stopped him from taking the baby and made him eat more.
Once they were in the playpen, things were different from before.
Mili could now take a few steps, so she no longer wanted to just sit on the playmat.
She gripped the playpen with her small hands, taking one step at a time. Her expression was serious, almost terrified.
In her world, this seemed to be a very dangerous activity.
This time, Mili managed to take five steps—a huge improvement compared to before.
"Mili, you’re amazing! You can already walk five steps."
GIGGLE GIGGLE GIGGLE...
As if she understood Chen Yuan’s praise, she giggled happily. Gripping the playpen with her small hands, she tried to walk forward again.
But Chen Yuan picked her up, not letting her continue.
"You’ve already walked a lot today. That’s enough for now. We’ll continue tomorrow."
"Ah."
Chen Yuan rummaged through the pile of toys and found a few storybooks.
"Daddy’s going to tell you a story."
Chen Yuan lay down on the playmat, and Mili climbed onto his chest.
"Today, Daddy is going to tell you the story of *Beibei the Crybaby*. Beibei was a little mouse who loved to cry. Every day, he would..."
As Chen Yuan told the story, Jiang Wanyi finished washing the dishes.
Seeing her daughter lying on Chen Yuan’s stomach, listening quietly to the story, she didn’t disturb them and quietly lay down on the edge of the sofa.
She lay on her side, watching Chen Yuan and the child. Her full, curvaceous figure looked especially alluring.
The two exchanged a smile, and Chen Yuan continued with the story.
As he went on, Jiang Wanyi began to snore softly and rhythmically.
She had been taking care of the child all day. Now that she had a moment to breathe, it was understandable that the overwhelming fatigue made her fall asleep.
"SHHH..."
Not caring if Mili understood, Chen Yuan put a finger to his lips. He quietly stood up, carried her back to the bedroom, then returned with a blanket and gently draped it over Jiang Wanyi.
Gazing at her sleeping face, Chen Yuan was a little captivated. He took out his phone, snapped a photo, and then took the child back to the bedroom.
Inside the bedroom, the two of them kept their voices as low as possible, wanting to let Jiang Wanyi get some good rest.
She didn’t know how much time had passed when she opened her eyes. The house was silent. She noticed the blanket covering her, and a warmth spread through her heart.
She wanted to go check on Chen Yuan, but her chest felt painfully full. She grabbed a breast pump and expressed her milk. Looking at the time, she saw it was already past eight in the evening.
Arriving at the door of the secondary bedroom, she saw Chen Yuan with the child perched on his shoulders, holding her little hands as they stood by the window looking at the scenery outside.
"See that cloud over there?"
"Ah."
"The cloud is white."
"That long thing over there is called a truck."
"Ah."
"That yellow thing is called a leaf."
"Ah."
No matter what Chen Yuan said, Mili responded to everything. Jiang Wanyi couldn’t help but want to laugh.
Hearing a sound behind him, Chen Yuan turned around with Mili.
"Look who’s here."
"Mama..."
That single word, "Mama," was enough to melt Jiang Wanyi’s heart. She set aside the expressed milk and went over to take Mili from him.
"Daddy’s tired too. Let Mama hold you."
Jiang Wanyi took the child from Chen Yuan’s arms and glanced at the milk she had set aside.
Chen Yuan didn’t stand on ceremony. He downed it in one gulp while it was still warm. Fresh was always best.
"You must be exhausted from the past few days."
"I am, a little," Jiang Wanyi said, holding the child. "I feel like she’s growing up and has a mind of her own now. She’s not as obedient anymore."
"That’s a normal feeling. From now on, she’ll probably get more and more disobedient," Chen Yuan said with a smile.
"After all, she’s growing up. Her sense of self is getting stronger, so she definitely won’t be like she was before."
"I’ve really been feeling it lately. So, the task of disciplining her is all yours," Jiang Wanyi said.
"Give it to me?"
"If she misbehaves, you deal with her."
"Me, deal with her?" Chen Yuan shook his head and said,
"That’s something you have to do. I need to play the good cop. Besides, I couldn’t bear to even lay a finger on her."
Jiang Wanyi knew what Chen Yuan was thinking. The real issue wasn’t whether he could bear to do it, but the fact that he wasn’t the child’s biological father.
If he were, none of this would be an issue. Even if she didn’t say anything, he would do it.
"I promise you, I definitely won’t overthink it," Jiang Wanyi said seriously.
"That’s still not okay. It’s not something I can do."
"I’m her mother. If she starts misbehaving in the future, her fear of me will definitely be less than her fear of you."
"But I’m not her dad. There are just some things I can’t do," Chen Yuan insisted.
"I’m not happy with you. I have her call you ’Daddy’ every day, but when something real comes up, you won’t handle it," Jiang Wanyi said, displeased.
"She cries even if you just tap her. If I hit her, wouldn’t you end up hating me in your heart?"
"Absolutely not! I’ll see you as her biological father." Jiang Wanyi looked at Chen Yuan earnestly and said, "In my heart, I truly accept you."
"Accept me as what?"
"Accept you as her father. But I’m not trying to pressure you. You don’t have any responsibility for me or the child. I just hope you can take on that kind of role," Jiang Wanyi said.
"You’re asking me to hit her, and I really can’t bear to do it."
"She’s only one year old right now. Why are you already thinking about this? Worrying about uncertain things tomorrow... aren’t we just looking for trouble?" Chen Yuan adeptly changed the subject.
"But these things are bound to happen in the future. We’ll have to face them one day."
Jiang Wanyi said, her expression downcast, a film of moisture welling up in her eyes.
