I Level Up By Making Enemies
Chapter 19 Inevitable
The win over Wu Shan did not bring Lin Feng any peace. If anything, the plaza became louder around him. Disciples no longer discussed him like a random anomaly that might disappear after one more round. They discussed him like a remaining obstacle, an unpleasant name that had refused to be erased as it was supposed to. Wherever he walked in the waiting area, eyes followed. Some were hostile, some were curious and some were simply calculating what his continued advance would do to their own side of the bracket.
Lu Cang felt every one of those stares as they were aimed at him personally.
"You should have lost to Wu Shan," Lu Cang whispered. "I mean that in the kindest, most life preserving way possible."
Lin Feng sat on the edge of a stone bench and flexed his fingers. The last match had left a deep ache in his forearms. Wu Shan’s strength had been honest and heavy. That was exactly why the win was useful. People did not hate clean miracles as much as they hated ugly results they could not dismiss.
"If I lost there," Lin Feng said, "the rest of the assessment would become boring."
"Boring is good. Boring means we survive."
Before Lu Cang could continue, a wave of movement passed through the crowd near the main bracket board. Another platform match had ended. Then another. Enforcement disciples moved in with jade slips, erasing fallen names and redrawing lines with efficient flashes of light. The once crowded bracket was collapsing in real time.
Lin Feng stood and walked over. The board was much more thinner now.
Whole sections had been wiped out. What remained were short paths and heavier names. Lin Feng’s own name still sat in place, black and clear. Two matches away, separated by one remaining intermediate slot that was already being settled, Zhao Feng’s name waited like a fixed spike.
The crowd saw it too.
"If Lin Feng wins one more, it’s Zhao Feng."
"Good. Someone should finally put him down."
Lin Feng listened with mild interest. There was a peculiar satisfaction in hearing people arrange his future for him. They always sounded so certain when they were not the ones stepping onto the platform. These guys never learn no matter how many times they were proven wrong.
An Enforcement disciple raised a recording jade and projected his voice across the plaza.
"Next round pairings, finalized!"
The remaining noise dipped.
Names rolled out one after another. Each announcement dragged a new line of tension through the waiting area. Disciples walked toward platforms with hard faces. Others exhaled in relief when their own names were not called against the worst possible opponents.
Then the voice reached the part that mattered.
"Second platform! Lin Feng of Block C versus Zhao Feng of Block C!"
For a moment, even Lu Cang stopped breathing.
The reaction around them was immediate and unrestrained.
"Finally it’s official. Zhao Feng will ends it here."
"He should have ended it on day one."
Across the plaza, Zhao Feng stepped out from his group with no surprise on his face. He had clearly expected this. His robes were clean, his posture upright, and the qi around him sat denser and more polished than any opponent Lin Feng had faced so far. The earlier rounds had not strained him. They had only preserved him.
Their eyes met through the shifting crowd. Zhao Feng’s mouth curved.
"You climbed this far," he said as he approached the lane toward the second platform. He did not shout."Good. It would have been dull to crush you while you were still worthless."
Lin Feng’s smile remained.
"That almost sounded like praise."
Zhao Feng’s gaze sharpened.
"No. Praise is for opponents. You are a public stain that learned how to delay the inevitable."
Several disciples from Zhao Feng’s side laughed under their breath. Zhou Ming, standing farther back with his monitor badge, did not laugh, but the satisfaction in his eyes was obvious. To him, this pairing likely looked like sanitation work.
Lu Cang grabbed Lin Feng’s sleeve with both hands.
"You can still break a leg. Not a real one. Just a temporary one. There has to be a medical exemption somewhere."
Lin Feng pulled his sleeve free.
"That would waste the ticket."
Zhao Feng was not Huang Fei and not Pan Qing. Spending tools too early against someone like this would only teach the opponent how to read him. If there was a moment to use anything, it would have to be precise.
The second platform had already drawn the densest ring of spectators so far. Even disciples from matches on other stages were glancing over. This was no longer just another outer sect evaluation bout. It was the pairing people had been waiting to consume.
Zhao Feng ascended the steps first and took his place without flourish. Lin Feng followed a moment later, stopping at the opposite mark. The distance between them felt smaller than on previous platforms, not because the stone had changed, but because the pressure had.
Below the platform, Lu Cang looked one strong breeze away from collapse. Further back, Gao Ren watched with a thoughtful expression from among the quieter disciples. In the elders’ pavilion, even Elder Mo’s attention had settled more fully on the match.
The Enforcement disciple stepped between them.
"Lin Feng of Block C versus Zhao Feng of Block C. No killing. No intentional crippling. Begin on signal."
Zhao Feng’s qi rose first, smooth and sharp, carrying the confidence of someone who believed the ending already written.
Lin Feng rolled his neck once and smiled.
All the better.
If Zhao Feng thought the ending was written, then every crack in that certainty would be worth more.
The Enforcement disciple raised his hand.
The plaza held its breath.
"Begin!"
