I Level Up By Making Enemies

Chapter 52 Companion

The senior disciple stopped at the final edge of solid ground and did not take another step.

"This is as far as we go," she said. "The agreement is made."

"You tied our rights to your survival as well" Bai Yan said flatly. "If you die in some stupid way, I’m going to be extremely annoyed."

Su Qing only said, "Don’t waste the opening you were given."

Lin Feng adjusted the satchel on his shoulder, checked the knife at his side, and turned toward the mist. He stepped through and the heavy, watchful pressure of the swamp closed around him again, but it no longer tried to push him back out. The mist accepted his presence without resistance. At the same time, nothing about the environment softened.

[Deep layer quest recorded: Remove designated disruption]

Lin Feng exhaled and started walking. He kept to the outer edges of the middle channels at first, re acquainting himself with the terrain and testing his current limits. The injuries from the water beast had improved during his time in the outer quarters, but they were far from gone. His qi reserves were stable, yet the foundation still felt the residual strain of forced recovery and repeated near death fights. He was stronger than when he had first been thrown out.

It did not take long for the swamp to remind him of the "no protection" clause.

A cluster of reed spines, the same kind that had lashed at him on previous days, stirred as he passed. They did not hesitate as vines snapped toward his legs with the same aggressive hunger as before. Lin Feng cut them away with short, efficient motions, stepped clear, and kept moving. No invisible shield had turned them aside and no residual mark had warned them off.

That was fine. He had never relied on being shielded.

As he walked, the weight of the new agreement settled more firmly across his thoughts. Somewhere in the deepest layer lived a creature the swamp itself found bothersome enough to bargain over. He was expected to remove it. Failure would not only end him, it would thin Orchid Veil’s access too.

Lin Feng paused on a rise of interlocked roots and looked further into the mist. Two immediate choices stood in front of him.

He could begin pushing deeper on his own, hunting strength and suitable targets for the remaining forced binds while slowly working toward the deep layer. Or he could return first to Yu Mei’s territory, update her on the new conditions, and see whether her knowledge of the swamp’s deeper paths and old agreements could keep him alive long enough.

The second option was more practical. Yu Mei had survived here for years. She understood the swamp’s temperament better than anyone else he had met. If he was going to carry a Quest that tied an entire sect’s interests to his success, he needed every advantage he could still reach.

Lin Feng turned his path toward the region where he had last left her shelter. He moved with care, keeping his qi circulation low and his footsteps lighter than before.

He kept walking towards the region where Yu Mei’s shelter sat against the massive root wall.

By the time the familiar root wall and woven shelter took shape in the mist, the light had begun to thin toward late afternoon. Lin Feng stopped at the edge of the small cleared space and waited.

Yu Mei appeared in the low entrance as if she had sensed him several minutes ago. Her eyes moved over him, the improved but still visible injuries, the cleaner robes from Orchid Veil and her expression tightened.

"You’re back," she said. It was not a greeting. "What did you do?"

Lin Feng stepped into the cleared space and sat on the same flat root he had used before. The boundless hostility of the middle channels pressed against the edges of the shelter, but inside the immediate area the air remained relatively stable, the way it always had around her.

"Long version or short version?" he asked.

"The version that explains why you’re wearing Orchid Veil robes."

He gave her the sequence without embroidery. The water beast and how close he had come to dying. The swamp’s irritation and the word that had stopped the killing blow. His expulsion to the outer boundary. The days under Bai Yan and Su Qing’s watch. The letter from Yue Qingfeng that had changed his status inside the sect for reasons no one would explain. And finally the deal struck at the old stone platform: re-entry granted wigh no protection, and the eventual removal of a specific deep layer creature that had been disrupting the swamp’s order. Failure or permanent abandonment would thin Orchid Veil’s access and harvests.

Yu Mei listened without interrupting. When he finished, she was silent for a long time. A small scaled creature near her feet flicked its tail and then went still, as if even it could feel the shift in mood.

"You made a deal with the swamp?"

"I needed back in."

"I can see that." She looked past him into the mist. "The creature the swamp means is not a simple territorial beast. Things that nest in the deep roots long enough to become a problem for the swamp itself are closer mythical than simple bessts. You are not ready. If you try to reach it now, you will die, and Orchid Veil will pay part of the price for your optimism."

Lin Feng didn’t argue. He had already reached the same conclusion.

"I wasn’t planning to head straight down," he said. "I came here first. You know these channels better than anyone I’ve met. If I’m going to carry this task, I need to get stronger inside the middle layers before I even think about the deep ones. And I need more information ."

Yu Mei studied him for another stretch of silence. The irritation in her expression was still present, but underneath it was the acceptance.

"You’re not wrong," she said finally. "The deal will not last forever if you stagnate. The swamp opened the path because it wants the deep disruption removed. If you sit still or waste the opportunity, it will eventually decide you are not worth it." She turned back toward the shelter.

"You can stay near this area for now. I will accompany you in your journey. We will talk about which middle channel targets are worth the risk for your next forced binds, and which paths will eventually lead toward the deeper layers.

She paused at the entrance and glanced over her shoulder.

"Understand something clearly. I am not your protector and i am not your master. I will share knowledge that keeps increases the odds of your success. BIn return, and you do not expect me to die beside you."

Lin Feng met her eyes and nodded.

"Clear."

Yu Mei disappeared into the shelter. A moment later she tossed a clean.ish cloth and a small jar of the bitter paste she used for wounds out onto the roots beside him.

"Clean up," she said from inside. "We will start proper planning at first light. Until then, rest some more."

Lin Feng decided to take some rest as she said. And despite the surroundings, sleep came easily. When he eventually up, he found that Yu Mei had already been awake for some time. She was in the middle of a final check. A compact but well used travel pack sat open at her feet. Inside he could see carefully wrapped dried rations, two sealed water containers, a coiled length of treated vine rope, a small medical pouch, several dull jade slips, and a few tools whose purpose he didn’t immediately recognize. She also carried a short, practical spear with a worn but well maintained head, currently strapped across her back.

She glanced at him once, then continued packing.

"You woke up ," she said. " Come eat something. We won’t have much time to rest later, til we find a suitable shelter."

Lin Feng did as told. While he ate a strip of dried meat and checked the knife, waterskin, and remaining salve, Yu Mei sealed her pack and settled it across her shoulders with ease. She looked around the shelter one last time, not with sentiment, but with the practical assessment that she might not return to it.

"I have lived here long enough to know what is worth carrying and what becomes dead weight," she said. "We should move light, but we do not move unprepared. We need extra water, basic medicine, rope, markers, and enough food to last if something forces us to stay in one place longer than planned. You can carry your own share and if you run out because you were careless, that is your problem."

She fixed him with a flat look.

"We will discuss routes, targets, warning signs, and what you need to know about the layers while we walk. I have no interest in repeating myself, so listen the first time. If you have questions, ask them on the move. Once we are in contested territory, talking increases risk."

Lin Feng secured his satchel and nodded.

"All perfectly understood Yu Mei."

Yu Mei took one final look at the root wall shelter, then turned toward the denser mist.

"Stay half a step behind and to my left. Match my pace. And if I stop, you should stop as well and follow my cues. "
