In the blink of an eye, it was time for Ivy Tanner to go to the hospital for her Down syndrome screening. To be honest, she was very nervous.

Although there was nothing wrong with her own intelligence, there was apparently a mentally challenged uncle in her family’s history, so she was terrified the baby would inherit that gene.

What worried her even more was that if the screening results were bad, she wouldn’t be able to stay with the Rhodes Family.

No one would keep a stupid woman who couldn’t produce a healthy child. Not even Lucas Rhodes himself would possibly continue this partnership with her.

One of the conditions in their original agreement was that she had to bear him a child.

’Forget it.’ Ivy Tanner didn’t dare to think about it any further.

Since this concerned whether his pregnant wife’s baby would be kept, Lucas Rhodes had actually managed to make time to accompany her to the hospital.

After the routine prenatal check-up, Lucas Rhodes accompanied his wife to have her blood drawn. The screening results wouldn’t be ready until four in the afternoon, so the two of them decided to go home first and send someone to pick up the report later.

On the way back, Ivy Tanner was dozing off in the car.

Suddenly, Lucas Rhodes received an urgent call. There was apparently some trouble at the company, so he had Ayla Ryan pull over abruptly. He then had Ivy Tanner get out and ride back in the bodyguards’ car that was following them.

That was the first time Ivy Tanner had seen such a tense and grave expression on Lucas Rhodes’s face. A faint sense of unease crept into her heart, but she didn’t dare ask what was wrong. And he had no time to explain. As soon as she got into the other car, his car drove away.

Back home, Ivy Tanner immediately picked up her phone and sent Lucas Rhodes a message: "Mr. Rhodes, I don’t know what happened, but if you can, please tell me. I can’t help much, but I will always support you."

After waiting for a long time, Lucas Rhodes finally replied: "It’s just some tedious company business. You don’t need to worry. Just focus on your pregnancy."

Ivy Tanner gave a helpless smile. She realized that while Lucas Rhodes was very polite to her, he never told her anything about the Rhodes Family’s affairs. He never said a thing.

It wasn’t just about the company; he wouldn’t even mention a single word about what relatives the Rhodes Family had, or what enemies.

That included his own personal matters. Whether he was happy or sad, no matter how tired he was from work, or whatever he was going through, he never told her.

Of course, she knew this was just how a contractual marriage worked. She wouldn’t beg for anything more.

Occasionally, Theo Rhodes would find time to come and visit, but he would only stay long enough to cheer her up before leaving. That kid was very dedicated to his work at the newspaper office and was quite the busybody himself.

This kind of life, while comfortable, was truly boring.

But she had no other choice.

Ivy Tanner sighed and put down her phone. ’I should just go to sleep.’

Upstairs, Ivy Tanner lay down on the bed but couldn’t fall asleep. She didn’t get up, though; it was more comfortable just to lie there.

She wasn’t sure how much time had passed when she suddenly heard the maids talking outside her window.

"No way, the Fifth Master got into another car accident?"

"It’s true. He just recovered from the last one, and now he’s had another. This time he’s seriously injured. I’m afraid they won’t be able to hide it from the Fifth Madam anymore."

"Eh, if they can’t hide it, they can’t hide it. The Madam is stupid. So what if she finds out the Fifth Master is hurt? It’s not like she knows how to take care of him."
