Chapter 729: Chapter 729: Young Master Kingsley Sent Us to Take You Back
Ethan Kingsley stared into her shocked eyes. "The election is getting closer," he added. "For now, just rest here. Don’t worry about anything else."
"Alright." A smile finally broke across Corinne Linden’s face.
Ethan Kingsley stood up abruptly, about to leave.
Corinne Linden called out to him, "Ethan!"
Ethan Kingsley paused and looked back, waiting for her to continue.
Her tone was almost pleading. "Is there even a small chance... that I could still find a place in your heart?"
Ethan Kingsley didn’t answer. His dark eyes gazed at her face, his attention gradually drawn to her captivating eyes. Finally, he nodded.
Corinne Linden fought the urge to laugh out loud, afraid he would find it distasteful. She held it in, watching him go.
Winter arrived, bringing with it dry, combustible weather. A massive forest fire suddenly broke out in a remote area. Fortunately, the region was uninhabited, and no casualties were reported.
Even so, the incident still made the news.
When Ethan Kingsley saw the news, his heart lurched for no reason. He picked up his phone and made a call. "Bring her back. Immediately."
Ivy Tanner had gradually grown accustomed to life in the cabin. She had even fallen in love with the peaceful seclusion, and the thought of spending the rest of her life there had begun to form in her mind.
With nothing much to do, she pulled Granny over to sit with her on the threshold and began to pour out her heart. "Granny, I’ve thought it over. When the baby is born, I’ll let Ethan Kingsley take the child. If he doesn’t, then the baby will stay here, and the three of us can spend the rest of our lives together."
Granny didn’t have her notebook with her, so she just raised her hand and made a few gestures.
Ivy Tanner didn’t understand. She wanted to say more, but then felt like she was just making a fool of herself. "Never mind," she said finally. "I’m just daydreaming again. I think I’ll go back to sleep."
Granny sighed and shook her head.
Ivy Tanner went back inside, ready to lie down.
Just then, Granny suddenly came in and hurriedly pulled her to her feet.
When she got to the doorway, she saw there were people outside. It wasn’t Ethan Kingsley, but several unfamiliar faces—three men and a woman, all looking to be in their twenties or thirties.
The woman in the group began signing to Granny, who nodded repeatedly.
When they were finished, the woman turned to Ivy Tanner. "Young Master Kingsley sent us to bring you back."
"I’m not going," Ivy Tanner protested immediately.
The woman gave a cold smile. "Young Master Kingsley’s orders are clear. If you don’t go, this old woman dies here."
Ivy Tanner’s eyes flew wide. She stared at the old woman in disbelief. "Granny, is what she’s saying true?"
Granny nodded, then raised a hand and gently pushed her, urging her to go.
Ivy Tanner bit her lip. "If I leave, what will you do here all by yourself?"
Granny made a series of gestures, but Ivy Tanner still couldn’t understand.
The other woman couldn’t resist translating for her. "The old woman is used to living here. She says not to worry about her."
"Granny..." Ivy Tanner impulsively threw her arms around Granny. Thinking of all the time they had spent together, her heart ached with the pain of parting.
’It was always like this. Everyone who was ever good to me eventually left.’
’Always...’
Granny glanced up at the sky. It was getting late, and the mountain roads would be hard to navigate after dark. She steeled herself and pushed Ivy away, then raised a hand to pat her shoulder. She offered no other gestures.
Her eyes held the gaze of someone looking at their own granddaughter, kind and filled with warmth.
Ivy Tanner looked at her through a blur of tears. "Granny," she cried, "thank you for taking care of me. I’ll take good care of myself when I leave, you don’t have to worry. You have to take care of yourself, too. If I’m ever able to come back here, I swear I’ll spend the rest of my life with you."
