I Married the President
Chapter 736: That Pill Should Be Fine
Chapter 736: Chapter 736: That Pill Should Be Fine
Mrs. Quincy overheard her from the side and wanted to ask what she meant, but the doctor was still speaking with Claire, so she held her tongue.
Once the doctor finished drawing Claire’s blood and setting up her IV drip, Mrs. Quincy finally asked, "Claire, what did you mean about a pill just now?"
Claire’s eyes were slick with tears. Enduring the sharp pains in her abdomen, she said, "This morning, I was taking a walk in the courtyard when a man disguised as a garbage collector came in. He caught me off guard and forced me to take a pill. Then my stomach started hurting. Mom, is the baby going to be okay?"
Mrs. Quincy quickly reassured her, "No, he’ll be fine. If that pill were poison, something would have happened to you by now. So, the pill itself is probably not the issue."
"But... but... I’m so scared..." Claire was on the verge of passing out from the pain. ’Why does it hurt so, so much?’
Mrs. Quincy said calmly, "Tomorrow is Election Day. I suspect someone wants you to go into labor early to distract Adrian. Don’t you worry, you’ll be fine. I’m guessing that pill was something to induce labor."
"Really?" Claire sounded doubtful.
Mrs. Quincy nodded. "Think about it. If that person wanted to kill you or your baby, why would they give you a non-lethal pill? Why not just kill you outright?"
"I guess... that makes sense..." Claire was convinced, but deep down, she was still afraid.
Mrs. Quincy said, "The doctor’s report should be back soon. We’ll wait and see."
Claire nodded. She desperately wished the man she loved could be by her side, but she knew he was too busy to come over. She would have to get through this with just her mother-in-law.
’No, I can’t get discouraged. I have to be strong.’
’The baby will be fine. He’ll definitely be fine!’
Before long, the doctor returned with the report. He said her bloodwork was normal with no abnormalities detected, confirming that Mrs. Quincy’s theory was correct.
Someone wanted her to go into labor early, so they had forced her to take that pill.
Mrs. Quincy wanted to tell Adrian, but Claire was hesitant. "If we tell him, what if he abandons the election to run over and be with me? Mom, we can handle this. Let’s not tell him."
Mrs. Quincy said, "If we don’t tell him, the people who forced you to take the pill will."
Claire thought about it and realized she had a point. "Alright, then," she said.
The words had barely left her lips when a man’s voice called out from outside, "Claire!"
The doctor stopped him. "Mr. Quincy, you can’t go in. Only one family member is allowed inside at a time."
Upon hearing this, Mrs. Quincy immediately said, "I’ll go out. Let Adrian come in."
Claire nodded.
After Mrs. Quincy left, Adrian rushed in and sat on the edge of the bed. He reached out, gripping her hand tightly. "Claire, don’t be afraid. I’m here. Don’t be afraid."
Claire forced a weak smile. "I’m not scared anymore. It’s just... my stomach hurts so much..."
’It was the most unbearable pain she had ever felt...’
Adrian said, "Childbirth is always painful. You have to be brave, for the baby."
Claire nodded firmly. Once another wave of contractions had passed, she asked, "You came over... what about the election?"
Adrian’s expression was nonchalant. "It’s not urgent. It doesn’t start until tomorrow."
"But what if I still haven’t given birth by tomorrow...?"
"It doesn’t matter. All I want is for you and the baby to be safe. Nothing else is important."
"Adrian..." Claire started to cry, tightening her grip on his hand. "I’m sorry... I’m sorry... I’ve dragged you down again... I’m so sorry..."
Adrian smiled, completely at ease. "I considered this might happen. It’s alright, Claire. All that matters is that the three of us are happy together."
