Chapter 215: Chapter 193: Lin’s Father and Mother Arrive (Part 3)

The moment Zhao Wendong finished speaking, it wasn’t just Chen Baoguo who was stunned; even the driver couldn’t help but glance at him several times. Neither of them had expected *this* to be the trouble he was referring to.

"Huh? Are you serious?"

Chen Baoguo had to double-check with Zhao Wendong. Having grown up in the countryside himself, he knew that for a rural family to save so much money in a year, they needed a large and capable workforce. ’And Zhao Wendong is really willing to just give it away?’

"Yeah, I’m serious. Could I trouble you to deliver it for me, Brother Chen? I don’t know his family."

After speaking, Zhao Wendong stuffed the money into Chen Baoguo’s hand. Chen Baoguo looked down at the money, then back at Zhao Wendong, and finally gave a firm nod.

"Alright. Don’t worry, Wendong. I’ll make sure to deliver this to his wife myself."

In that moment, Chen Baoguo began to understand why Zhao Wendong was so well-liked, and why even that old gentleman had gifted him a piece of calligraphy. Though he could seem flippant and talk nonsense at times, in all their interactions—from hunting the tiger to capturing the spies—he had always been decisive and resolute. Now, he was giving away twenty yuan without even blinking. ’Isn’t this what the ancients meant by upholding great virtues while disregarding minor conventions?’

Back at the Zhao residence, the whole family was on edge. With Zhao Wendong out catching spies, everyone was too distracted to eat dinner. Even Little Tuanzi stood on the heated kang bed, clutching her little tiger cub and peering out the window, even though she couldn’t see anything clearly through the paper-covered pane.

"Don’t worry, Mom. Dongzi is really capable now. He’ll be fine."

"Sigh, but these aren’t wild boars or wolves. They’re spies, and they have guns! An officer was already killed..."

Chen Yanmei couldn’t go on. The more she thought about it, the more terrified she became. She didn’t dare to imagine what would happen if something happened to Zhao Wendong, just when their family’s life was finally starting to look up.

"I’m so sorry, Auntie. If it wasn’t for my parents..."

Before Lin Zhiyin could finish, Zhao Dashan, who was lying on the kang bed, cut her off. Although she and Zhao Wendong had officially registered their marriage, they hadn’t held the wedding ceremony yet, so she hadn’t started calling his parents "Mom" and "Dad."

"Silly child, don’t be ridiculous. It’s only right for Dongzi to help his future father-in-law and mother-in-law. Besides, even if your parents weren’t involved, Dongzi would have gone anyway!"

"That’s right, dear. Don’t overthink it. This has nothing to do with you."

Seeing Lin Zhiyin’s eyes well up with tears, Chen Yanmei set aside her own worries to comfort her impossibly beautiful future daughter-in-law.

"Third Brother’s back! Third Brother’s back!"

Little Tuanzi, who had been staring out the window, suddenly started jumping up and down. Though she couldn’t see clearly, she could make out the headlights of a car at the courtyard gate through the window paper. Hearing her cry, the others in the room saw the lights too. A moment later, the whole group rushed outside in a flurry, leaving only Zhao Dashan and the younger children behind.

Zhao Dashan let out a long sigh of relief. He reached over to stop the crawling Yadan from tumbling onto the floor, a smile touching his lips. ’The kids are all grown up now. I can’t look after them forever. I just hope they stay safe and sound.’ Lin Zhiyin burst out the door and immediately spotted Zhao Wendong getting out of the car. She rushed over to inspect him from head to toe, terrified he might be missing an arm or a leg.

"Zhao Wendong, you’re finally back! Are you okay?"

"Hahaha, what are you doing? I just went to catch a spy. There’s no need to be so nervous. Let go of me, your mom and dad haven’t even gotten out of the car yet!"

At his words, Lin Zhiyin froze. She let go of Zhao Wendong in disbelief and stared as two more figures emerged from the car. Who else could it be but her parents?

"Dad! Mom!"

"Yinyin!"

Lin Zhiyin cried out and rushed toward her parents, throwing herself into their arms. The family of three clung to each other, sobbing with joy.

None of them had imagined that Zhao Wendong would actually succeed, that he would truly reunite them in Dragon King Pond. Now, Lin Huaimin and Wang Lulu wouldn’t have to go back to the re-education farm. As long as they stayed in Dragon King Pond, they could live a normal life.

"Big Brother, bring some more fish."

"Sister-in-law, could you take these clothes for me?"

"Squad Leader Chen, hold on, don’t leave yet."

Zhao Wendong wasn’t idle, either. After getting Xiaojin and the three dogs down from the vehicle, he had Zhao Wenjun bring over more fish and tossed them into the back of the truck.

"Oh, Wendong, you’ve already given us some. This is too much."

"Haha, these aren’t for you or Farm Director Liu. The driver went to a lot of trouble taking us back and forth, so a few are for him to try. Then there’s Director Tang and Tang Er—by the way, is Tang Er the director’s second son? They gave me clothes, so I have to return the favor. And Special Commissioner Wei gave me a hat. These fish aren’t worth much, but I caught them with my own hands, so they’re a token of my appreciation. I’ll have to trouble you to pass them along for me, Squad Leader Chen."

Chen Baoguo nodded, thinking to himself, ’Zhao Wendong really has a knack for dealing with people. He’s thought of every little detail.’ He nodded again and gave his assurance.

"Don’t worry. I’ll make sure they get them."

"Alright, thanks, Squad Leader Chen. It’s getting dark, so drive safe on the way back."

The driver hadn’t expected to get the same thoughtful gift as the officials just for driving them. He gratefully honked the horn a few times at Zhao Wendong before heading off with Chen Baoguo. Zhao Wendong’s mission was complete, but theirs was far from over. Capturing the spies was only the first step; a great deal of work still lay ahead of them. But that no longer had anything to do with Zhao Wendong.
