Chapter 158: Doesn’t Look Very Smart
Chapter 158: Chapter 158: Doesn’t Look Very Smart
The sudden, sharp rebuke made the three of them flinch, and they answered almost instinctively.
"Yes!"
"No!"
The three of them gave two completely different answers. Startled, they stared at each other, wide-eyed, before tacitly changing their answers.
"No!"
"Yes!"
The three of them: "..."
The onlookers: "..."
Caden Kensington was rendered speechless by their incompetence. "So, which is it? Yes or no? Do you want to take a moment to get your stories straight?"
Evelyn Lane hadn’t expected them to be so stupid. But the words were already out. To avoid arousing suspicion, she had to bite the bullet and smooth things over. "What they mean is, they didn’t see her steal the items with their own eyes, but they did see her put them in the drawer."
As Evelyn Lane spoke, she shot the three of them a warning glance.
They caught her look and shuddered. At least they weren’t completely hopeless. They quickly chimed in, "Right, right, right! We didn’t see her steal anything, but we all saw her put the items in the drawer with our own eyes. There’s no mistake. She’s the thief!"
At this, the onlookers began whispering among themselves again.
Mr. Kerr straightened up, pulling rank. "Caden, you heard them. When something like this happens within the company, it must be dealt with severely. Otherwise, other employees might get ideas, and things will descend into chaos, won’t they?"
"You’re right, Uncle," Caden Kensington said meaningfully. "When something like this happens, if we don’t handle it seriously, it sets a bad precedent and poisons the work environment. That’s why I’m so curious. Are you a mind reader? They can’t even get their story straight, yet you seem to know all the details."
Evelyn Lane’s expression stiffened. Before she could say a word, Caden Kensington had already turned back to the three accusers. "I’ll give you one more chance. Are you certain you saw her steal this jewelry and hide it in the drawer with your own eyes?"
Hearing this, the crowd finally realized something was amiss. Mr. Kerr’s face paled. "Caden, what’s the meaning of this? Are you trying to cover for this woman? They just said they saw everything with their own eyes. There’s no room for error. Even if you want to show her favoritism, you can’t just silence everyone and call black white."
When the Kings of Hell fight, the little ghosts suffer.
On one side was a company director, and on the other, the boss’s own son. The three "little ghosts" were caught between a rock and a hard place, cold sweat beading on their foreheads.
In the end, they could only grit their teeth and side with Mr. Kerr. "That’s right. We definitely saw her hide those items with our own eyes. We swear on our character, everything we’ve said is the truth."
"Then let’s call the police. We can have them check my security camera right here. We’ll see who’s lying, and who the real... thief is."
"What? A security camera?!"
Evelyn Lane, Mr. Kerr, and the three accusers all looked in the direction Caden Kensington was pointing. When they saw the security camera, which had been installed in the corner at some unknown time, they could no longer maintain their composure and shrieked.
With the camera footage, everything that followed was much simpler.
As the primary victim, Mackenzie Lynch went to the police station with Caden Kensington and the others.
After everything was settled and she left the police station, the first thing she did was open her family’s main group chat and send a message.
Everything’s resolved. The treacherous villains have all been taken in. Serena’s prediction came true, down to the last detail. Incredible!
The moment she sent the message, the chat was instantly flooded with thumbs-up emojis.
Next, we’ll leave it to Kyle. People from our Donovan Family don’t go looking for trouble, but we won’t let others harm us for no reason either!
The family patriarch had just sent the message when Mackenzie Lynch’s husband, Kyle Donovan, immediately popped up in the chat and sent an "OK" emoji.
At the same time, he opened a private chat with his wife and sent her a message.
Things aren’t wrapped up here yet. Wait for me outside for a bit, and we’ll go pick up Sue together.
Mackenzie Lynch, however, had no intention of just waiting around. She immediately sent a message back, turning down his offer.
You go ahead and do your thing. I’m going to pick up Sue first. If I’m late, I’ll miss all the fun.
Fun? What fun? [Confused-face.jpg]
Mackenzie ignored her husband’s curiosity. In high spirits, she called Director Lewis to request the next day off, planning to go to the hospital for a check-up first thing in the morning.
After all the commotion that day, she had certainly made a name for herself with the top brass.
Now that Evelyn Lane was taken in, chances were she wasn’t getting out. Barring any surprises, the department manager position would probably fall to her.
Mackenzie wasn’t terribly concerned about the promotion itself. But it was a case of one-person-one-post. As long as she took the position, it was unlikely some other weirdo would be parachuted in to make her life miserable. It was a true win-win.
The positive turn in her career lifted her spirits immensely, putting her in the perfect mood to go watch some drama unfold elsewhere.
The first bit of drama on her agenda was at her own daughter’s kindergarten. Based on the secrets she’d overheard at the Donovan estate yesterday, Mackenzie put two and two together. She figured that Eloise’s cousin would probably show up at the kindergarten today to find his long-lost first love and son.
And so, Mackenzie had been keeping a close eye on the area around the kindergarten all day.
When she dropped her daughter off that morning, she even waited at the gate for a while, afraid she’d miss the dramatic reunion.
But alas, this Mr. Lynch was taking his sweet time. Mackenzie waited at the kindergarten gate until it was nearly time to close, but she didn’t see a soul and had to leave in disappointment.
But she had a feeling now. When school let out, this unreliable cousin of Eloise’s was sure to make an appearance!
As it turned out, a woman’s intuition is usually pretty accurate.
Mackenzie had just picked up her daughter when a loud roar of car engines sounded from outside, followed by gasps of surprise from many of the other parents.
Even the teachers inside the kindergarten were craning their necks to look outside. "What’s going on?"
A feeling came over Mackenzie, and she turned to look. Sure enough, she saw a long line of black luxury cars pulling up to the kindergarten gate in an orderly procession. Every single head was turned to watch.
After all the cars had come to a stop, the door of the most luxurious vehicle at the front opened, and a tall, slender figure emerged from the back seat.
Mackenzie took a closer look, only to find the man’s mouth and eyes were bruised. He looked like he’d just been beaten up badly.
’??? Is this really Eloise’s cousin?!’
The moment Zane Lynch got out of the car, he spotted a familiar figure in the distance. His eyes lit up, and the corners of his lips curled up unconsciously, but he accidentally tugged at the cut on his lip and hissed in pain.
After composing himself for a moment, Zane Lynch took the bouquet of roses from the person beside him and strode over to Juliet Lyons. "Juliet," he said excitedly, "we finally meet again! I’ve been looking for you... HSSS..."
Juliet Lyons, who had suddenly become the center of attention: "..."
Mackenzie: "..." ’For as stunning as his entrance with the luxury cars was, this part is an equal disaster. Eloise’s cousin doesn’t seem too bright.’
