I Reincarnated As The Villain Of The Interstellar Empire [BL]
Chapter 41: Evan
Chapter 41: Chapter 41: Evan
The name "elder brother" arrived so gradually that Ren almost didn’t notice the exact moment it happened, Finn slipping it into casual conversation somewhere between his third and fourth day in the suite, tugging at Ren’s sleeve during breakfast with an easy, unselfconscious familiarity that suggested the title had already settled into place in the boy’s mind well before he’d bothered voicing it out loud.
"Elder brother, can I have more of the purple fruit?"
Ren had nearly choked on his tea the first time he heard it, glancing up to find Finn watching him with wide, expectant eyes, entirely unaware of the small, quiet earthquake the simple phrase had just caused. Milo, seated across the table, had gone very still for a moment too, watching Ren’s reaction carefully, some old, guarded caution flickering behind his young eyes like he was bracing for correction, for rejection, for some clear boundary to be drawn reminding both of them exactly how temporary this arrangement was actually supposed to be.
Ren hadn’t corrected either of them. He’d simply reached over, refilled Finn’s small bowl with more of the shimmering purple fruit, and let the moment pass without comment, and somewhere in that silence, the title had apparently settled permanently into place, Finn using it constantly after that, Milo following more cautiously, testing the word out in smaller, quieter moments before eventually adopting it just as thoroughly as his younger brother had.
’Elder brother,’ Ren thought now, watching both boys settle into their usual spots for the evening meal, considerably more relaxed and comfortable than the frightened, hollow-cheeked children he’d first found in that alley over a week ago. ’I don’t know when exactly that happened, or how I feel about it, honestly, but I don’t hate it either.’ Something warm and complicated settled in his chest at the thought, a feeling he hadn’t fully examined yet and wasn’t entirely sure he was ready to.
It was Finn, predictably, who finally asked the question Ren had been quietly dreading since the very first night, looking up from his plate with the same open, guileless curiosity he brought to nearly everything.
"Elder brother, what’s your actual name?"
Ren froze for just a fraction of a second, the question landing with more weight than its innocent delivery suggested it should carry. He’d been so careful about everything else, the hair, the eyes, the clothes, the careful, deliberate distance he’d put between himself and every trace of his old identity, and somehow, in the middle of all that careful planning, he’d never once actually settled on what he was supposed to say when someone simply asked him, directly, who he was.
"Rafayal," almost slipped out first, old habit and muscle memory nearly betraying him before he caught it, the name dying on his tongue before it could fully form. He swallowed hard, recovering quickly enough that neither boy seemed to notice the brief hesitation.
"Ren," nearly followed right behind it, equally dangerous, equally traceable, the name he’d been using internally this entire time, the name that still, somehow, felt more genuinely his than either of the others despite belonging to a life he’d left behind on a planet that no longer technically existed for him.
’Neither of those,’ he thought quickly, mind racing. ’Neither of those is safe. Not here, not with a public search apparently already circulating my old face across half the Empire by now. If either of these boys ever mentions my actual name to the wrong person, even completely innocently, that’s a thread someone determined enough could eventually follow straight back to me.’
"Evan," Ren said finally, the name arriving somewhat spontaneously, close enough to his own actual name that it felt natural leaving his mouth, distant enough that it carried no connection whatsoever to anything traceable. "You can call me Evan."
"Evan," Finn repeated, testing the word out with the same easy, uncomplicated acceptance he brought to everything, apparently satisfied with the answer and already moving on to his next thought before Ren had even fully processed his own relief at successfully navigating the moment. "Evan, your eyes are really pretty. I like the blue."
Ren blinked, caught off guard by the specific compliment, and then felt a fresh wave of quiet relief wash through him as the observation properly registered. ’Right,’ he thought, something almost like gratitude settling into his chest. ’Right, thank God I actually thought to change that too. If I’d kept the violet, if these two sweet, innocent children had grown attached to a stranger with the exact same distinctive eye color as the missing heir currently plastered across every checkpoint in this sector, that’s exactly the kind of detail that gets noticed by the wrong person at the wrong time.’
"Thank you," Ren said out loud, smiling at Finn despite the private, complicated relief still settling through him. "I like them too, actually."
Milo glanced up at that, something quiet and considering in his expression, though he said nothing about it, apparently content to simply watch the easy exchange between his brother and the man neither of them fully understood yet. Ren caught the look anyway, and felt a fresh thread of unease weave through the relief regardless. ’He notices things,’ Ren thought, keeping his own expression carefully neutral. ’More than most kids his age would. I need to be careful not to hand him anything else to notice.’
The rest of the meal passed easily after that, Finn chattering happily about some new game he’d invented using the suite’s recreational terminal, Milo offering occasional, dry commentary that made Ren genuinely laugh more than once, and by the time the evening wound down properly, both boys tucked into their own room, the earlier tension of the name question had faded into something considerably more comfortable, the three of them settling into a rhythm that felt, disturbingly quickly, like something close to an actual family.
"Evan works," Milo said at one point, some time later, after dessert had been served and the earlier tension had eased somewhat. "It suits you, actually. Better than I would have expected."
"High praise," Ren said, relief flooding through him at the boy’s easy acceptance of the name, at least for now.
Ren sat alone afterward, in the quiet of his own room, turning the whole exchange over with a complicated mixture of relief and lingering unease. ’That was close,’ he thought, staring up at the ceiling, the ring’s soft, ambient glow filtering faintly through the window despite the late hour. ’Too close. I need to be more careful, going forward, not just about the obvious things, the hair, the eyes, the name, but about the small, careless slips that could give away everything I’ve worked so hard to build here.’ He thought about the quiet, considering look Milo had given him over dinner, the way the boy seemed to notice more than he ever said out loud, and felt a fresh thread of unease weave through the relief. ’He’s smart. Smarter than most adults I’ve met since waking up in this body, honestly. I can’t assume, just because he’s a child, that he won’t eventually piece together more than I’m comfortable with him knowing.’
Still, underneath the unease, something warmer and more settled remained, the memory of Finn’s easy, uncomplicated affection, of Milo’s careful, hard-won trust slowly beginning to solidify into something resembling genuine comfort. ’Evan,’ he thought, testing the name silently in his own mind the way Finn had tested it aloud earlier. ’Just Evan. No last name yet. Maybe I don’t need one. Maybe that’s exactly the point, building someone new from scratch instead of just wearing another borrowed name the same way I wore Rafayal’s borrowed face.’
He closed his eyes eventually, the exhaustion of the day finally catching up properly, and let himself drift toward sleep with the quiet, contented sounds of Finn’s occasional giggling still drifting faintly through the connecting door, Milo’s low, patient voice gently telling him to settle down and go to sleep already. ’This is good,’ Ren thought, the last coherent thought before sleep finally claimed him. ’Whatever else is happening back at that outpost, whatever search is currently hunting for a face I no longer wear, this, right here, this quiet, unexpected family I’ve somehow stumbled into, this is genuinely good. I’ll figure out the rest as it comes.’
