I Reincarnated As The Villain Of The Interstellar Empire [BL]
Chapter 51: The Announcement
Chapter 51: Chapter 51: The Announcement
The news broke three days later, and Ren felt the shift ripple through Halcyon Station almost immediately, the previously calm, unhurried atmosphere of the culinary district suddenly charged with something considerably more electric, holographic displays across every public space flickering over from routine advertisements to an official Imperial broadcast, the crest of the royal household glowing prominently across the screen.
He’d been walking with Milo and Finn toward their usual breakfast spot when the change happened, and Ren stopped mid-stride, watching the broadcast unfold across a massive public display mounted above the plaza’s central fountain, Reven’s face, composed and formally dressed in a way Ren had never once seen from him, filling the screen alongside an older man Ren immediately recognized, through nothing more than the shared, sharp bone structure and the same pale, unsettling eyes, as the Emperor himself.
"After considerable deliberation," the broadcast’s narration explained, "His Majesty confirms the identity and continued good health of His Royal Highness, Crown Prince Reven Astoria Valcrest, whose extended absence from public life has, until now, been maintained for reasons of personal security following multiple documented threats against his safety in youth."
’There it is,’ Ren thought, watching the footage continue, official portraits and carefully curated public appearances flashing across the screen in rapid succession, the entire, sprawling architecture of Reven’s careful concealment finally dismantled in a single, sweeping broadcast. ’No going back from this now.’
Milo tugged at his sleeve, watching the broadcast with wide, curious eyes. "That’s Reven," he said, something like quiet awe entering his young voice at seeing the man he’d been casually calling by first name suddenly presented with the full, formal weight of Imperial ceremony.
"That’s Reven," Ren confirmed, something complicated twisting in his own chest as he watched the broadcast continue, additional footage now showing brief clips from what Ren recognized, with a fresh jolt, as security recordings from the outpost itself, carefully selected moments meant to establish the Prince’s competence and dedication to Imperial service during his years of hidden training work.
They found him later that morning back at the hotel, and the change in atmosphere around him was immediate and unmistakable, a small contingent of formally dressed security personnel now stationed discreetly near the hotel’s entrance, Reven himself seated in the suite’s main living area looking, for the first time since Ren had known him, genuinely, visibly exhausted in a way that had nothing to do with physical exertion.
"That was fast," Ren said, settling across from him while Milo and Finn drifted toward the balcony, giving the adults space with the easy, practiced discretion they’d both developed over the last several weeks.
"My father moves quickly once he’s decided something needs doing," Reven said, something dry and tired entering his voice. "Particularly when the alternative is allowing rumors and speculation to spread unchecked. Better to control the narrative directly than let it develop organically through leaked security footage and unverified sightings."
"How are you actually doing," Ren asked, watching him carefully, genuine concern underlying the question.
Reven was quiet for a moment, something more honest slipping through his usual careful composure. "Overwhelmed," he admitted finally. "I spent years very deliberately avoiding exactly this outcome. Public scrutiny, formal obligations, the endless political maneuvering that comes with being visibly, undeniably the heir to an entire Empire. I’d forgotten, somewhat, how much energy all of that actually demands, on top of everything else currently happening."
"You didn’t have to do this," Ren said quietly. "Not for me. I would have found another way to deal with my father’s threats eventually."
"I did have to," Reven said, something firm and certain cutting through the exhaustion. "Not just for you, though you’re certainly part of it. I’d been hiding behind convenient excuses for years, telling myself the danger justified indefinite concealment, when really, somewhere along the way, hiding had simply become easier than facing everything waiting for me back at court." He met Ren’s gaze steadily. "You leaving, disappearing so completely I genuinely didn’t know if I’d ever see you again, made me realize exactly how much I’d been avoiding by staying hidden. I don’t regret the decision. I just underestimated how tiring the actual transition would be."
Before Ren could respond properly, the suite’s door chimed, and one of the newly stationed security personnel appeared, expression carefully professional despite an obvious undercurrent of urgency. "Your Highness," he said, addressing Reven directly, "we’ve intercepted several communications suggesting factions opposed to your succession have already begun mobilizing in response to the announcement. Increased security protocols are being recommended for your immediate location, effective immediately."
Reven’s exhausted expression sharpened instantly into something more alert, more focused. "Define increased protocols," he said.
"A full security detail stationed throughout this hotel, restricted movement outside designated safe zones, and Imperial recommendation that you relocate to a more easily secured location within the next forty-eight hours," the officer said, something apologetic entering his careful, professional tone.
Ren felt his stomach drop at the implications, glancing instinctively toward the balcony where Milo and Finn remained, blissfully unaware of the conversation currently unfolding behind them. "What does that mean for everyone else currently staying with him," Ren asked, unable to keep the sharp edge of protective concern from his voice.
"Given your own classified status, and the children’s current association with both His Highness and yourself, I’d recommend extending the same security considerations to your entire party," the officer said carefully. "Factions interested in disrupting the succession, or in claiming your own classification for their own strategic purposes, may view this as an opportune moment to act while attention is divided."
The weight of that settled heavily over the room, and Ren felt old, familiar dread resurfacing, the careful, hard-won peace of the last several days suddenly feeling considerably more fragile than it had even an hour earlier.
"We need to talk to Yegard and Alouis," Ren said, already rising, urgency propelling him forward despite the fresh wave of anxiety building in his chest. "If this is escalating that quickly, we need an actual plan, not just reactive scrambling every time a new threat surfaces."
"Agreed," Reven said, already moving as well, the exhaustion from moments earlier folding back beneath sharp, focused determination. "I’ll have Yegard pull whatever military resources he can justify requisitioning given the circumstances. Between his authority and mine, we should be able to secure something considerably more defensible than a civilian hotel, regardless of how luxurious its discretion protocols happen to be."
They found Yegard and Alouis in the adjoining suite Reven had arranged for them, and the moment Ren explained the security officer’s warning, both of their expressions shifted immediately into the same sharp, focused urgency Ren had come to recognize from every genuine crisis they’d faced together.
"There’s a secured Imperial research facility roughly six hours from here by fast transport," Yegard said, already pulling up logistics on his own terminal. "Considerably less luxurious than your current accommodations, but defensible, discreet, and staffed with personnel who already carry appropriate clearance for handling exactly this kind of protective situation."
"What about Milo and Finn," Ren asked immediately, the question arriving before any other consideration could take priority. "A military research facility doesn’t exactly sound like an appropriate environment for two young children."
"It can be adapted," Yegard said, something firm and reassuring in his tone despite the gravity of the situation. "I’ll personally ensure appropriate accommodations are prepared, separate from any sensitive research areas, with proper amenities suited to their needs. Their safety matters here just as much as yours does."
Ren felt a measure of tension ease slightly at the genuine, immediate reassurance, though the underlying anxiety of the situation remained firmly in place. "How quickly do we need to move," he asked.
"Given the security officer’s forty-eight hour recommendation, I’d suggest we depart within the next twelve to sixteen hours," Reven said, already coordinating logistics alongside Yegard with the same fluid, practiced efficiency Ren remembered from their earliest days working together at the outpost. "Enough time to properly pack and prepare the children for the transition, but not so much time that we’re leaving an unnecessary window for whatever’s currently mobilizing against us."
Ren nodded, already turning his thoughts toward how he intended to explain all of this to Milo and Finn without unnecessarily frightening either of them, the fragile, hard-won peace of the last several days now apparently already shifting into something considerably more precarious.
’So much for staying settled,’ he thought, glancing out toward the balcony where the boys remained, still unaware of the sudden urgency now unfolding around them. ’I suppose that’s simply the shape of this life now. Peace, followed by crisis, followed by whatever comes next.’ He took a steadying breath, already moving toward the balcony to begin the difficult conversation waiting there. ’At least this time, I’m not facing it alone.’
