Chapter 73: Chapter 73: Without Warning

The pain arrived without any warning at all, a sharp, searing lance that tore through Ren’s skull the instant Vance finished speaking, and he barely registered his own sharp, involuntary gasp before his knees buckled entirely, the room tilting violently around him as he collapsed.

"Ren," Reven’s voice cut through the sudden chaos, already moving, catching him before he could hit the floor fully, panic replacing the earlier investigative focus in an instant.

Ren couldn’t properly answer, the pain blinding and total, radiating outward from somewhere deep behind his eyes, and he was distantly aware of being lowered carefully to the ground, of Yegard’s voice joining Reven’s in sharp, urgent alarm, of Vance already moving with rapid, professional efficiency to assess him.

"What’s happening to him," Yegard demanded, voice tight with barely controlled fear.

"I don’t know," Vance said, already running diagnostic scans with her portable equipment, her earlier composure cracking under the sudden crisis. "His vitals are spiking erratically, this doesn’t match the earlier toxin pattern at all."

Ren tried to speak, tried to properly communicate what he was experiencing, but the pain made coherent words impossible, something vast and overwhelming pressing in from every direction, images flickering behind his eyes too fast and fragmented to properly process, familiar faces and unfamiliar rooms tangling together in a disorienting, frightening rush.

"He’s seizing," Vance said sharply, shifting position to properly support his convulsing body. "Get medical support here immediately, full emergency response."

Reven’s hands remained steady despite the obvious terror in his expression, holding Ren carefully as the seizure continued, while Yegard barked urgent commands into his comm, summoning additional medical personnel with sharp, commanding authority.

The world narrowed, for Ren, into something strange and disjointed, pain and fragmented imagery blurring together until he could no longer properly distinguish between what was actually happening around him and what existed only within his own fracturing consciousness. He caught glimpses, fractured and disorienting, a dim room he didn’t recognize, a voice speaking words he couldn’t properly understand, and beneath it all, something that felt, disturbingly, like a presence, vast and unfamiliar, pressing against the edges of his own mind.

Then, as suddenly as it began, the pain began to recede, the seizure’s violent convulsions easing into something more manageable, and Ren found himself gasping for breath, consciousness slowly stabilizing even as exhaustion crashed over him in overwhelming waves.

"Ren," Reven’s voice reached him properly now, close and desperate. "Stay with me, please, stay with me."

"I’m here," Ren managed, voice barely more than a rasp, blinking against the harsh medical lighting that had apparently flooded the room at some point during the chaos, medical staff now crowded around him alongside Yegard, Reven, and a visibly shaken Vance.

"What happened," Yegard asked, voice tight with lingering fear even as relief flooded his expression at Ren’s returning coherence.

"I don’t know," Ren admitted, working through the lingering disorientation carefully. "It just... hit me. Pain, and then something else, images I couldn’t properly process. It felt like something trying to force its way into my mind."

Vance’s expression sharpened at that description, something urgent and alarmed cutting through her clinical focus. "Force its way in how," she pressed carefully. "Can you describe it more precisely?"

Ren struggled to properly articulate the strange, fragmented sensation. "Like... someone trying to look through my own thoughts, except it felt external, not like my own mind malfunctioning. There was a presence, something I don’t recognize, pressing against the edges of my consciousness."

The medical team worked quickly around them, confirming his vitals had stabilized despite the sudden, violent episode, and Vance pulled Reven and Yegard aside briefly, voice low but urgent.

"This isn’t consistent with any natural progression of his classification anomaly," she said, something deeply concerned in her tone. "What he’s describing sounds considerably more like a deliberate, external psychic intrusion attempt, something I haven’t encountered in any documented Sentinel or Guide case before."

"Could the Architect be responsible," Reven asked, something cold and furious cutting through his lingering fear.

"It’s possible," Vance admitted. "If they’ve been studying him this extensively already, if they understand his dual classification well enough to engineer a toxin exploiting its vulnerabilities, it’s not unreasonable to assume they might also possess technology or ability capable of attempting some kind of remote psychic intrusion."

Ren, still lying on the examination table nearby, caught enough of the conversation to feel fresh dread settle alongside his exhaustion. "Someone was trying to get inside my head," he said, voice still weak but carrying clear, mounting alarm. "Not just studying me from a distance anymore. Actually trying to reach into my mind directly."

"It appears that way," Vance confirmed, something grave in her careful assessment.

Yegard’s expression had gone hard and cold, old fury simmering visibly beneath his controlled composure. "Can you protect him from this," he demanded. "Whatever this is, whatever technology or ability they’re using, can we actually defend against it?"

"I’ll need time to properly research the phenomenon," Vance admitted. "This is well beyond anything in my existing expertise. But I promise you, I’ll dedicate every resource available to understanding and countering it."

Ren felt exhaustion pulling at him again, the aftermath of the violent episode leaving him drained in a way that went considerably beyond simple physical fatigue. "I need to rest," he admitted, voice barely above a whisper now. "I can’t... I don’t have the strength to think through this properly right now."

"Rest," Reven said immediately, something fiercely protective in his tone as he helped Ren settle more comfortably, Yegard moving to support his other side. "We’ll handle the investigation. You need to recover properly first."

They moved him to a private recovery room shortly after, and Ren found himself drifting in and out of uneasy sleep over the following hours, Yegard and Reven both maintaining a constant, watchful presence beside him, neither willing to leave despite the exhaustion evident in their own posture.

He woke properly sometime later, the room dim and quiet, and found both men still present, though something in their expressions suggested considerable time had passed, exhaustion and worry carved deep into both their features.

"How long this time," Ren asked, voice still rough but considerably steadier.

"Only a few hours," Yegard said, something relieved cutting through his evident exhaustion. "Vance confirmed your vitals have properly stabilized. Whatever that was, it appears to have passed, at least for now."

"At least for now," Ren repeated, dread settling heavy at the implication that whatever had happened might recur. "They’re going to try again, aren’t they. Whoever’s behind this."

Reven’s jaw tightened, something fierce and protective replacing his earlier exhaustion. "If they are, we’ll be considerably more prepared next time," he said. "Vance is already researching countermeasures, and I intend to have additional protective measures in place before you’re exposed to anything resembling vulnerability again."

Ren nodded slowly, exhaustion still weighing heavy despite the reassurance. "What did I say," he asked carefully, "while it was happening. Did I say anything that might actually help understand what they were trying to access?"

Yegard and Reven exchanged a brief, careful glance, something complicated passing between them that Ren couldn’t quite read.

"You said a few things," Reven admitted finally, choosing his words with obvious care. "Mostly fragmented, difficult to properly parse. But you mentioned something about a book, about pages, about a story that wasn’t supposed to be yours."

Ren felt his stomach drop sharply, cold dread flooding through him despite his exhaustion. Old, careful instinct screamed at him to deflect, to explain the comment away as simple delirium, but something in both men’s careful, searching expressions suggested the moment for easy deflection might have already passed.

"That’s..." he started, voice catching, uncertain exactly how much he was prepared to reveal, even now, even to the two people who’d proven, again and again, exactly how fiercely they intended to protect him.
