I Reincarnated As The Villain Of The Interstellar Empire [BL]
Chapter 82: Confirmation
Chapter 82: Chapter 82: Confirmation
The third facility proved to be the right one, though confirmation came at considerable cost, the reconnaissance team’s drone picking up a brief, unmistakable energy signature matching Ren’s exact classification profile before the facility’s defenses detected and destroyed it entirely.
"We have confirmation," the strike team leader reported through Reven’s comm, voice tight with professional urgency despite the evident danger of the moment. "Heavy security, considerably more than the other two locations combined. This is definitely where they’re holding him."
Reven felt something fierce and desperate settle into focused, singular purpose. "Prepare for immediate extraction," he said, already moving toward the waiting transport. "I’m leading the primary strike team myself."
"That’s considerable risk, Your Highness," the strike team leader said carefully, "given your position within the succession."
"I don’t care," Reven said flatly, something raw and immovable in his tone. "Whatever risk this carries, I’m not sending others into danger for him while I remain safely removed from it myself."
Yegard fell into step beside him without argument, old understanding passing between them without need for further discussion. "I’m coming too," he said simply. "Don’t bother arguing."
"I wasn’t planning to," Reven said, something grateful cutting through his fierce determination.
They assembled the strike team quickly, careful coordination despite the urgency driving every decision, and within the hour, three transports launched toward the confirmed facility, security measures and tactical planning falling into place with the kind of practiced efficiency that came from weeks of careful, methodical preparation finally reaching its necessary conclusion.
The facility came into view as their transport approached, a stark, utilitarian structure built into the side of an otherwise unremarkable asteroid, defensive installations visible even from considerable distance, clearly prepared for exactly the kind of assault now bearing down upon it.
"Defensive fire incoming," the pilot warned, already beginning evasive maneuvers as the facility’s automated defenses activated.
The battle that followed unfolded with brutal, efficient intensity, strike teams breaching the facility’s outer perimeter while defensive forces scrambled to repel the sudden, coordinated assault. Reven fought alongside Yegard with fierce, desperate precision, old rivalry entirely forgotten in the face of their shared, singular purpose, cutting through resistance with devastating efficiency as they pushed deeper into the facility’s interior.
"Life signs detected in the central holding section," the tactical officer reported through their shared comm, voice tight with urgency. "Matches his profile."
"Get us there," Reven ordered, already moving faster, adrenaline and desperate hope propelling him forward despite the continued resistance they encountered at every turn.
They fought through two more defensive lines before finally reaching the central holding section, and Reven felt his heart hammering hard against his ribs as they breached the final security door, finding themselves in a considerably more clinical, sterile section of the facility than the combat-oriented corridors they’d fought through to reach it.
"Ren," he called out, voice raw with desperate hope, already moving through the quiet, empty corridor.
They found him three doors down, and Reven’s relief at the sight of him alive, apparently unharmed, nearly buckled his knees entirely. Ren looked up sharply at the sound of the breach, something fierce and disbelieving crossing his exhausted features.
"You found me," he said, voice catching with overwhelming emotion as Reven crossed the room in three quick strides, pulling him into a fierce, desperate embrace.
"Of course we found you," Reven said, voice rough with barely controlled emotion. "I told you we would."
Yegard joined the embrace a moment later, equally fierce and relieved, and Ren allowed himself, for just a moment, to simply exist in the overwhelming relief of their presence, old fear finally easing under the weight of their fierce, protective arrival.
"We need to move," Yegard said finally, old discipline reasserting itself despite the emotional weight of the reunion. "This facility’s defenses are still active, and we don’t know how much longer we have before reinforcements arrive."
Ren nodded, pulling back slightly, old urgency overriding his relief. "The Architect," he said quickly. "They were here, interrogating me regularly. If they’re still in the facility—"
"We’ll handle it," Reven said firmly, already moving to secure Ren properly between himself and Yegard as they prepared to retreat. "Your safety is the priority right now."
They moved fast, fighting their way back through the facility’s compromised defenses, and Ren, despite his exhaustion, found himself contributing what strength he still possessed, his blade bloomed once more around his forearm despite his earlier captivity’s toll on his usual precision.
They reached the extraction point with considerably less resistance than their initial breach had encountered, and Ren felt genuine relief flood through him as their transport’s ramp finally lowered, promising escape from the facility that had held him captive for what felt like considerably longer than the actual days it had genuinely been.
The transport lifted off cleanly, the facility’s defenses apparently too compromised by their assault to properly pursue, and Ren allowed himself, finally, to fully collapse against the relief of both Yegard and Reven’s presence, exhaustion and overwhelming emotion crashing over him in equal measure.
"I thought..." he started, voice catching with the weight of everything he’d feared during his captivity. "I was so afraid you wouldn’t find me in time."
"We would have searched forever if that’s what it took," Reven said firmly, holding him close despite the cramped confines of the transport’s interior. "You’re not someone I’m willing to simply lose, Ren. Not now, not ever."
Yegard’s hand found his, steady and grounding despite the lingering adrenaline of their desperate rescue. "The Architect," he said carefully, "did they tell you anything useful? About their actual plans?"
Ren nodded slowly, exhaustion warring with the urgent need to properly share what he’d learned. "Everything," he said. "The sealed region, what it actually is, what they actually want from me." He took a shaky breath, old fear resurfacing at the memory of the Architect’s calm, unsettling explanation. "It’s considerably worse than we realized."
"Tell us," Reven said gently, though his expression had already sharpened with focused, grim attention.
Ren explained carefully, working through his exhaustion to properly convey everything the Architect had revealed, the dimensional convergence point, their belief that Ren himself served as some kind of necessary key, the full, ambitious scope of what they actually intended to accomplish. Both men listened with growing, grim understanding, the weight of the revelation settling heavy across the transport’s cramped interior.
"We need to seal that region permanently," Reven said finally, something fierce and determined cutting through his exhaustion. "Whatever it takes, I’m not allowing the Architect, or anyone else, to continue pursuing this particular ambition using you as their intended tool."
"Agreed," Yegard said, something equally firm in his own tone. "But first, we need to get you properly home, properly safe, before we address anything else."
Ren nodded, exhaustion finally claiming him properly now that the immediate danger had passed, and let himself drift toward much-needed rest, held securely between both men who’d proven, once again, exactly how fiercely they intended to protect him, regardless of what danger or difficulty stood in their way.
