I See Murders Before They Happen
Chapter 120 - 118: You’re with the Police
Chapter 120: Chapter 118: You’re with the Police
The area behind the nightclub was dark.
The streetlights were practically decorative; the neon sign of the club cast more light than they did.
The delivery driver still had his face covered.
Su Miaoyi narrowed her eyes and saw the scar on his neck.
"It’s been so long, but it looks like you still care about what happened, huh?" Su Miaoyi said. "Ah Xu."
Zhuang Yanzheng’s voice immediately came through her earpiece. "Su Miaoyi, safety first. I’m almost there."
"Who the hell are you? Who sent you? What’s your objective?" Huang Haoxu demanded.
"Who do you think I am? Only a few people know what happened back then," Su Miaoyi said. "And you know all of them. Who do you think told me?"
Huang Haoxu stared at her. "Are you with the police?"
"If I were with the police, how would I know about your past?" Su Miaoyi countered.
Huang Haoxu fell silent for a moment. "Did the Boss tell you? Why?"
"What do you think?" Su Miaoyi shot back.
"No, the Boss wouldn’t do this to me."
"Why not? Because he saved you when you almost died after getting your throat slit?" Su Miaoyi said. "He saved you because you nearly died during a trial. Now, you’ve been exposed by the police because you screwed up. How are those the same?"
Huang Haoxu was silent, unable to respond.
"The Boss put you in Jinghai because he thought you were meticulous, decisive, and competent in every way. But it turns out you’re just another piece of trash, only good for dragging him down." Su Miaoyi bluffed, playing on his insecurities.
"If the Boss sent you, why didn’t you contact me directly?" Huang Haoxu asked.
Su Miaoyi looked at him without speaking, a mocking smile touching her lips.
She was actually scrambling to figure out how to answer him.
He showed no signs of attacking, and she had no intention of making the first move. While waiting for Zhuang Yanzheng, she might be able to get more information out of him.
Their organization operated on a top-down, one-way line of communication.
He was different from Lu Jing. He knew more, had more power, and could make his own decisions on certain matters.
He was like a leader in Jinghai, managing people like Lu Jing.
The person above him, however, was likely not in Jinghai.
So, if they avoided easily traceable methods like cell phones, they probably had a hidden meeting spot.
"You’ve been exposed. All our contact points are compromised," Su Miaoyi said. "What if the police are using you as bait? I’m not as stupid as you are. I just got here and I’m not familiar with the area yet, so isn’t this method perfect? You showed up, didn’t you?"
"The Boss still can’t forget her, can he? Found someone who looks so much like her to keep by his side?" Huang Haoxu said.
"Are you trying to drive a wedge between me and the Boss?" Su Miaoyi knew who he was referring to, but she didn’t take the bait.
"What else did the Boss say?" Huang Haoxu didn’t seem suspicious.
"The Boss said you can die now. I’m taking over from here on out," Su Miaoyi said. "Any last words?"
Huang Haoxu stood frozen for a moment before putting a hand in his pocket.
Su Miaoyi narrowed her eyes, glancing to the side. There was cover to her right she could use if she needed to dodge.
She watched him.
Huang Haoxu pulled a sealed bag from his pocket and tossed it to her.
Su Miaoyi caught it and looked inside.
Inside were three wooden beads. Each was engraved with a character.
"The Boss gave me five in total. I gave one to Lu Jing and left one with Ren Mao. These are what’s left," Huang Haoxu said.
Su Miaoyi examined them, then put them in her pocket. "Anything else?"
She wanted to know how many more of their people were in Jinghai, who they were, and what industries they worked in.
But she didn’t dare ask too eagerly, afraid of making him suspicious.
"There’s also a list, with all the people the Boss has placed in Jinghai and their industries. It’s at—" Huang Haoxu’s eyes suddenly filled with killing intent. "Wait! You’re with the police!"
Su Miaoyi frowned and said coldly, "If you don’t want to die, just say so. I can give you a quick end. Are you just trying to mess with me? Asking the same question again."
Her imposing act was convincing, but she clicked her tongue in her mind. ’So close. So very close.’
"You’re with the police!" Huang Haoxu stepped forward. "The people looking for me mentioned someone from a sketch! Why a sketch and not a photo? Because you don’t have one! It was a sketch from an artist! That artist, Lu Zhishen!"
"You heard the police were looking for you with a sketch, right?" Su Miaoyi tried to salvage the situation.
She had worried this would happen, which was why she took the sketch with her when she left the private room yesterday. She hadn’t let them take a photo, just told them to memorize his face.
But someone still let it slip.
At first, Huang Haoxu might have been too angry, nervous, and anxious to realize it.
But he just had to figure it out at this exact moment.
So close.
"You’re lying to me!" Huang Haoxu lunged, and with a flick of his wrist, a dagger appeared in his hand, aimed at Su Miaoyi’s neck.
Su Miaoyi took a step back, then immediately sidestepped and grabbed his arm.
Huang Haoxu wrenched his arm free and stabbed at her again with the dagger.
Su Miaoyi dodged again, kicking out at him. Huang Haoxu blocked it. Just as he was about to press the attack, he sensed an attack from behind and quickly dodged.
"Zhuang Yanzheng! So you are working together!" Huang Haoxu exclaimed. "You people are really something else! Besides Qin Leyan, who else did you plant as an undercover agent? Who told you all this?!"
"Come back with me, and I’ll tell you," Zhuang Yanzheng said.
He had arrived a while ago but had been listening to their conversation through the earpiece, staying back so he wouldn’t be discovered.
"We’ll see if you live long enough to talk," Huang Haoxu said, suddenly reaching behind his back.
Su Miaoyi and Zhuang Yanzheng rushed forward to stop him.
They were fast. Huang Haoxu managed to pull out his gun, but he couldn’t chamber a round.
Su Miaoyi and Zhuang Yanzheng didn’t give him the chance.
Lin Yue arrived quickly with his team. "Police! Don’t move!"
Huang Haoxu acted as if he hadn’t heard a thing.
Zhuang Yanzheng pinned his arm, and Su Miaoyi immediately kicked the gun out of his hand.
Huang Haoxu broke free. Su Miaoyi then locked his other arm, and Zhuang Yanzheng took the opportunity to punch him.
Then Su Miaoyi dislocated his arm.
The gun fell to the ground.
Zhuang Yanzheng kicked it away.
Huang Haoxu broke free again, resetting his dislocated arm as he retreated.
Zhuang Yanzheng and Su Miaoyi immediately moved in again.
Lin Yue ran over with his men.
They aimed their guns at Huang Haoxu, but he just glanced at them without a flicker of reaction.
Lin Yue, furious at being ignored, holstered his gun and was about to join the fight.
Just as he ran up, Zhuang Yanzheng and Su Miaoyi each grabbed an arm and slammed Huang Haoxu to the ground.
Zhuang Yanzheng took out his handcuffs and cuffed him.
Su Miaoyi took a few steps back and caught her breath.
Lin Yue looked at her.
Feeling his gaze, Su Miaoyi looked back at him.
They held each other’s gaze for two seconds before Lin Yue looked away.
Su Miaoyi looked away too.
