I See Murders Before They Happen
Chapter 133 - 131: The Jiang Father and Son
Chapter 133: Chapter 131: The Jiang Father and Son
At Jiang Junrui’s residence in Jinghai.
It was already past two in the morning.
The villa was brightly lit.
Jiang Junrui sat on the sofa, looking at his father. "He’s not back."
Jiang Yaozu’s face was ashen.
Jiang Junrui’s expression was just as frigid. "I told you not to interfere. I could have handled this myself. Now look, Zheng Hui got caught up in this too."
"How would you handle it? You’re emotional and indecisive. A woman like Mo Xiaoxiao, that cheap woman, you kept her by your side for so many years. You let a toy develop ambitions, forcing you to marry her," Jiang Yaozu said. "And now? This Su Miaoyi, and you’re still hesitating! Are you planning to marry her into the family too?!"
"You certainly didn’t hesitate. So where’s Zheng Hui? Where’s the man you sent? I told you, she’s close to the police now. I told you not to make a move," Jiang Junrui said. "Why didn’t you listen? You even came here yourself. What for? To make it more convenient for the Jinghai Police Station to question you? To save them the trip between Jiangcheng and Jinghai? Father, have you become some great philanthropist in your old age?"
"Insolence!" Jiang Yaozu exclaimed. "Do you still remember that I’m your father?! How dare you speak to me like that!"
Jiang Junrui said nothing.
When he saw Jiang Yaozu appear at the villa tonight, he knew Zheng Hui had made his move.
In Jiang Yaozu’s mind, Zheng Hui would surely succeed. He would surely kill Su Miaoyi.
He had come here for two reasons. First, to lecture his son after Zheng Hui’s success.
Second, to protect Zheng Hui from his son’s punishment after he returned.
’What a stubborn, pigheaded old man.’
"Getting led around by the nose by some insolent girl! The moment she dared to say she wanted the Fengjiang Group, she deserved to die," Jiang Yaozu said. "The Jiang family has never been threatened by anyone!"
"Regardless of how you disapprove of my methods, I’m the one in charge of the Jiang family now," Jiang Junrui said. "If you’re going to retire, then retire completely. Don’t presumptuously interfere with my decisions."
Jiang Yaozu’s chest heaved with rage.
"Right now, you should be praying that Zheng Hui doesn’t say a word," Jiang Junrui said.
"He won’t talk," Jiang Yaozu stated with certainty.
"And you think that brute’s brain can withstand round after round of police interrogation?" Jiang Junrui retorted.
"He’ll keep his mouth shut no matter what. He won’t implicate the Jiang family," Jiang Yaozu said.
"He’d better be," Jiang Junrui said, staring into his father’s murky eyes. "Otherwise, the Jiang family will need someone to take the fall."
Jiang Yaozu frowned. "You want me to take the fall?"
Jiang Junrui replied, "Father, you don’t want the Jiang family line to end, do you?"
Jiang Yaozu fell silent.
"Mr. Jiang, the police are here." Someone knocked and entered from outside.
Jiang Junrui glanced at Jiang Yaozu and asked, "Who is it?"
"Zhuang Yanzheng is here with his men."
"Alright, I understand." Jiang Junrui didn’t say another word to Jiang Yaozu and went straight outside.
As he came downstairs, the first person he saw was Su Miaoyi.
Only then did he see Zhuang Yanzheng and several other police officers.
"Captain Zhuang, what brings you here so late?" Jiang Junrui walked up to them in a few steps and shook Zhuang Yanzheng’s hand. "What’s with the entourage? Is something wrong?"
"You’re still up late as well, Mr. Jiang," Zhuang Yanzheng said.
"Well, since I’m away from Jiangcheng, I’ve had to work remotely. The work’s piled up, so I’m just running on coffee," Jiang Junrui said. "But you officers from the station are working hard too, still on the job at this hour."
As he spoke, he looked over at Su Miaoyi.
Su Miaoyi met his gaze.
Jiang Junrui smiled. "Staying up late isn’t good for a girl."
Su Miaoyi replied coolly, "It isn’t good for men, either."
Jiang Junrui raised an eyebrow. "So, Captain Zhuang, is there something you need?"
"Yes," Zhuang Yanzheng said. "We caught someone and came to ask a few questions."
"Does it have something to do with me?" Jiang Junrui asked with a frown.
"I heard your father came to Jinghai today, Mr. Jiang," Zhuang Yanzheng said. "I’m afraid we’ll have to disturb him as well, despite the late hour."
Jiang Junrui had someone on the side go call for him. "One moment, please."
Zhuang Yanzheng asked, "Mr. Jiang, do you know a Zheng Hui?"
As he spoke, he showed him a photo of Zheng Hui.
Jiang Junrui took the photo and studied it for a moment. "This person... I believe he used to be a driver for my father. But... if I remember correctly, he’s dead."
Both Su Miaoyi and Zhuang Yanzheng watched him.
His face betrayed no hint of a flaw in his story.
Jiang Junrui added, "What happened to him?"
"Mr. Jiang, do you remember how long Zheng Hui worked as your father’s driver?" Su Miaoyi asked.
Jiang Junrui looked at her and smiled. "I’m afraid I don’t recall clearly. It’s been quite a while. It probably wasn’t for very long."
"Your memory seems excellent, Mr. Jiang. To remember someone who didn’t work for you very long so clearly," Zhuang Yanzheng commented.
"It’s mainly because when this person got into a car accident, he was driving one of my family’s cars. I was the one who handled the matter," Jiang Junrui explained.
"In that case, Mr. Jiang, how did you confirm at the time that the person in the car was indeed Zheng Hui?" Zhuang Yanzheng asked again.
Jiang Junrui froze for a second. "What do you mean? It wasn’t him?"
He thought for a moment. "I seem to recall someone telling me at the time that he was the one who drove the car out. Was it not him?"
"If the man who died was him, then how is he alive now?" Su Miaoyi stared at him. "How can a dead man come back to life? Don’t you agree, Mr. Jiang?"
Jiang Junrui blinked twice. "Miss Su, it’s quite frightening to say such things in the middle of the night. I’m easily scared."
"Don’t worry. If you have a clear conscience, you won’t have to worry about a row of ghosts standing at your bedside to watch you sleep," Su Miaoyi said.
Just as she finished speaking, Jiang Yaozu came down the stairs.
Zhuang Yanzheng rose to his feet.
Su Miaoyi and the other officers stood up as well.
Jiang Yaozu looked as if he had just been woken up, his eyes still heavy with sleep.
"Mr. Jiang," Zhuang Yanzheng said. "My apologies for disturbing you so late."
"It’s no disturbance at all." Jiang Yaozu came downstairs and sat on the sofa. "Please, sit. All of you. It’s my honor to cooperate with a police investigation. Ask whatever you need to. I’ll tell you everything I know."
Jiang Junrui picked up a blanket from the sofa and draped it over his father’s legs.
Zhuang Yanzheng asked, "Mr. Jiang, what brings you to Jinghai this time?"
"Nothing major. It’s my legs." Jiang Yaozu patted his knees. "My son insisted on bringing me here to see a doctor. To be honest, I’ve already seen many famous doctors in Jiangcheng, so there was no need to come here, but he insisted."
Jiang Junrui smiled faintly from the side.
Zhuang Yanzheng then asked him about Zheng Hui.
"I have some recollection. At the time, I thought that even though the Jiang family wasn’t responsible, it was still a human life. I wanted to give his family some extra money, but his parents were abroad and never came back, so the matter was dropped," Jiang Yaozu said.
"But Zheng Hui says the man who died in the car was another one of your drivers," Zhuang Yanzheng said. "Did you not notice you were short one driver, Mr. Jiang?"
