A month had passed since the Stonehorn attack, and the traitor remained hidden in our midst like a serpent beneath still waters. Aurin had doubled the guard, interrogated every warrior with access to the inner armory, and still found nothing. Suspicion curdled the air, turning every friendly greeting into a potential deception, every shared meal into a calculated risk.

But life continued, stubborn and resilient, refusing to be defined by fear.

Levy had begun to speak.

Not the simple words of before. Mama, dada, more. But full sentences, tumbling from her small mouth in a cascade of observations and questions and delighted exclamations. She woke each morning with new phrases, as if language had been building inside her during the night and now demanded release.

"Mommy, the sun is waking up too!" she announced one dawn, her golden eyes wide with wonder. "Look, it’s stretching!"

"Theo made me a horse! A real horse! Well, not real; real, but real enough!" she declared another day, clutching the wooden carving to her chest. "I love it I love it I love it!"

She talked through breakfast, through lessons, through baths and bedtime stories, her voice a constant stream of consciousness that wove together observations about cloud shapes, questions about why the sky was blue, declarations of love for her siblings, and detailed critiques of her fathers’ various attempts to entertain her. Leon had never been so simultaneously delighted and exhausted.

"She gets it from you," Soryn observed dryly, watching Levy explain to a bemused Ravin why the serpent eggs needed lullabies and why she had to sing to them. "When they hear me singing to them they will know their big sister is here." She sounded so confident.

"I was never that bad," I protested.

"You once explained the entire process of wound cauterization to a patient who only asked if he could eat before surgery," Aureon pointed out.

"That was educational."

"It was forty minutes."

But I couldn’t deny the joy of it. My daughter finding her voice, her confidence, her place in the world. She was happy, in a way that made the lingering shadows seem less dark.

And through it all, Caelion waited.

He had been patient, my merman, patient in a way that spoke of deep tides and ocean depths where time moved differently. While I bled, I had slept in the nest with Soryn and the eggs, giving my body rest, keeping my distance from all of them. The others understood. They gave me space, let me heal, let the cycle complete itself. But I had made Caelion a promise. The next ovulation would be his. His turn. His chance.

He tended to the waterways, ensured the cisterns remained full, taught the children to swim in the shallow pools. He was present, always present, but never pressing. He knew what was coming. What I had promised.

And I saw it in his eyes. The hunger. The hope. The desire for what the others had been given. Soryn had his eggs. Ravin had my first four; Atlas, Ryder, Chase, and Jasper and Leon had Sikai, Niku, and Levy. And now, finally, it would be Caelion’s turn. His time to try for what he wanted most. Children of his own. Children with me.

I found him in the lower reservoir one evening, his bare torso gleaming in the lamplight as he checked the water levels. He looked up as I approached, and I saw the moment he understood. The moment he scented the change in me, the fertile time that had begun.

"I promised," I said softly, stepping close enough to feel the cool mist rising from the water. "And I keep my promises."

His breath caught. His sea glass eyes darkened with a hunger he no longer hid. "Now?"

"Tomorrow. Away from here. Just us." I reached out, my hand finding his cool, wet fingers. "I want to give you the best chance. The hot springs you spoke of. Where the heat will help. Where we can try as many times as you need."

He pulled me to him then, his arms crushing me against his chest, his face buried in my hair. "Thank you," he whispered, his voice rough with emotion. "Thank you. I will give you everything. Everything I am."

"I know," I whispered back.

He pulled back, his eyes searching mine. "The others?"

"They know," I assured him. "Soryn is guarding the nest. The others understand. This cycle belongs to you, Caelion. It’s your turn."

His smile was radiant, beautiful, full of hope and desire and love. "Then let me show you where we will go. Let me prepare everything."

"Show me," I said. "And then tomorrow, we will begin."

He did.

---

We left before dawn, slipping away while the household still slept. Caelion led me through passages I had never seen, tunnels carved by ancient water into the bedrock beneath the hills. The air grew warmer as we descended, thick with moisture and the mineral scent of deep earth.

We emerged into a cavern that took my breath away.

The hot spring filled most of the space, a pool of turquoise water that steamed gently in the cool air, its surface reflecting the soft glow of phosphorescent moss that clung to the walls. Columns hung like frozen waterfalls from the ceiling, dripping mineral rich water that created rippling music. The air was thick, humid, scented with sulfur and something else, something primal and clean.

"This is beautiful," I breathed.

Caelion stood at the edge of the water, already stripping off his clothes, his eyes fixed on me with an intensity that made my skin flush hotter than the steam. "It is nothing," he said, "compared to what I will show you."

He stepped into the water, sinking beneath the surface, then emerged with his hair streaming, his skin gleaming, water cascading down the hard lines of his abdomen. He held out his hand to me. "Come."

I undressed slowly, feeling his gaze like a physical touch, watching the way his eyes tracked every revealed inch of skin. When I was bare, I stepped to the edge, hesitating at the heat.

"Trust me," he said.

I took his hand and let him guide me in.

The water was perfect. Hot enough to loosen every muscle, to melt the tension I had carried for months, but not so hot as to burn. I sank into it with a moan that seemed to echo off the cavern walls, feeling the heat seep into my bones, into my blood, into places that had been too long ignored.

Caelion moved behind me, his hands finding my shoulders, kneading with skilled precision. "You carry so much," he murmured against my ear, his breath cool against my heated skin. "Let me carry you. Just for today. Just for now."

I leaned back against him, feeling his cock pressed against my lower back, and knew that patience had reached its end.

He turned me in his arms, his mouth finding mine with a hunger that spoke of weeks of denial, months of waiting. His tongue swept in, tasting of salt and minerals and desire, his hands roaming my body beneath the water, tracing curves and hollows with reverent possession.

"I have waited so long," he gasped between kisses, his fingers finding my core, stroking through the wet heat that had nothing to do with the spring. "For you. Wet and willing and mine."

"Then take me," I demanded, arching into his touch. "Stop waiting. Stop being patient. Take what you want."

His eyes flashed, sea glass turning storm dark. In one fluid motion, he lifted me, my legs wrapping around his waist, the water buoying us both. He positioned himself at my entrance, teasing with the head of his cock, rubbing through my folds until I was whimpering with need.

"Look at me," he commanded. "When I enter you, look at me."

I met his gaze, held it as he thrust upward, filling me in one deep stroke that made us both cry out. The water surged around us, rippling outward in waves that matched the rhythm he set. Slow, deep, powerful strokes that hit every nerve ending, that made my toes curl and my nails dig into his shoulders.

"Yes," he groaned, his forehead pressed against mine, his hips working in the practiced rhythm of the tides. "Yes, Krys, yes. This. You. Finally."

He carried me to the edge of the pool, sitting me on the smooth stone lip while he stood in the water between my thighs. The change in angle made him hit deeper, and I threw my head back with a cry that echoed through the cavern. He took advantage of my exposed throat, his mouth tracing my pulse, his teeth grazing my collarbone, his hands gripping my hips to hold me still for his thrusts.

The heat of the spring, the heat of our bodies, the steam that surrounded us. It was overwhelming, sensory overload that pushed me toward the edge faster than I expected. When he reached between us to press his thumb against my clit, I shattered, my orgasm crashing through me like a wave breaking on shore, my body clamping down on him so hard he groaned and stilled, fighting his own release.

"Not yet," he gritted out, his jaw tight with control. "Not nearly yet."

He pulled out, ignoring my whimper of protest, and lifted me from the stone. "Turn around," he ordered, his voice rough with desire. "Hands on the rock."

I obeyed, presenting myself to him, feeling vulnerable and powerful all at once. He ran his hands down my back, over the curve of my ass, his thumbs spreading me open to his gaze.

"Beautiful," he murmured. "So beautiful. So ready for me."

He entered me from behind, one long thrust that filled me completely, his pelvis flush against my ass. The angle was different here, deeper, hitting spots that made my vision blur. He set a harder pace, no longer patient, no longer controlled, his hips slapping against mine, the sound of wet flesh meeting wet flesh echoing in the steamy air.

One hand reached around to cup my breast, rolling my nipple between his fingers, while the other found my clit again, circling in time with his thrusts. I pushed back against him, meeting him stroke for stroke, the water splashing around us, the heat building between us until I was panting, gasping, begging.

"Please, Caelion, please."

"Come for me," he commanded. "Come on my cock, Krys. Show me how much you want this. Want me. Want my children."

The words sent me over. I came with a scream that seemed to shake the columns above us, my body convulsing, my vision whiting out, my nails scoring the stone beneath my hands. He followed, his own roar filling the cavern, his cock pulsing as he spilled inside me, his arms wrapping around me to hold me through the aftershocks.

We collapsed together into the water, floating in the heated embrace of the spring, our hearts hammering in sync.

"Once," he whispered against my hair. "That was once."

I turned my head; my eyes heavy with satisfaction. "You said three times."

His smile was wicked, predatory, utterly unlike my gentle merman. "I did. And I keep my promises."

He lifted me again, carrying me to a flat rock ledge where the water was shallow, where he laid me down and worshipped me with his mouth. My breasts, my throat, the sensitive skin of my inner thighs. When he finally tasted me, his tongue hot and clever against my swollen flesh, I was already climbing again, already desperate, my hands fisting in his blue hair as he brought me to the edge with lips and teeth and the relentless rhythm of the ocean.

He entered me again as I was still coming down, his second time slower, more deliberate, his eyes locked on mine as he moved with the endless patience of deep water currents. He built my pleasure gradually, stroke by stroke, until I was trembling beneath him, until the heat between us felt like it might boil the spring around us. When I came this time, it was a deep, rolling wave that seemed to start in my toes and crest at my crown, leaving me boneless and gasping.

"Twice," he counted, his voice smug with satisfaction.

I was limp, sated, my body singing with endorphins and heat. But he was not done.

He lifted me from the rock, carrying me back into deeper water, cradling me against his chest. "Can you take more?" he asked, his voice gentle despite the hardness I could still feel pressed against my hip. "I need... I have waited so long, Krys. I need to fill you. Completely. Until there is no doubt."

I understood. He wanted to ensure conception, wanted to give himself every chance, wanted to mark me as thoroughly as his nature demanded.

"Yes," I whispered, wrapping my arms around his neck. "Yes, Caelion. Fill me. Claim me. Make me yours."

He groaned, a sound of pure gratitude, and positioned me once more. This time, he took me face to face, my legs wrapped around his waist, my back supported by the water and his strong arms. He moved with the rhythm of the tides, endless and powerful, his cock hitting that perfect spot inside me with every stroke, his mouth devouring mine, his hands gripping my ass to hold me exactly where he needed.

The steam surrounded us, the mineral rich water buoyed us, the ancient cavern witnessed us. We moved together as if we had been made for this, for each other, his blue hair tangling with my dark strands, his sea glass eyes locked on mine, his breath mingling with my gasps.

When I came the third time, it was with his name breaking from my lips, my body milking him, my nails leaving marks on his shoulders that would last for days. He followed, his roar drowning out my cry, his release flooding me with heat that seemed to burn even in the hot spring, his arms crushing me to him as if he could merge us into one being.

We floated there, entwined, as our breathing slowed and the water settled around us.

"Three," he whispered, pressing kisses to my temple, my eyelids, my lips. "Three times. And every time, you were perfect. Perfect."

I smiled against his chest, too exhausted to speak, my body throbbing with the aftermath of pleasure, my womb full of his seed.

"Thank you," he said, his voice thick with emotion. "For this. For the chance. For not making me wait longer."

I found the strength to lift my head, to meet his eyes. "Thank you for waiting. For being patient. For wanting me enough to wait."

He kissed me then, soft and sweet and full of promise, and I knew that whatever came next, whether child or continued waiting, we had this. This moment. This connection. This love that ran as deep as the ocean he came from.

We stayed in the spring until the water began to cool, until our fingers wrinkled and our lips were swollen from kisses. Then he carried me back through the tunnels, wrapped in his arms, protected and cherished and thoroughly claimed.
