Chapter 606: Chapter 383: Bizarre and Mysterious Behavior

The night was deep, the sky blanketed with countless stars that seemed to stand guard around a pristine white moon.

"Hoo..."

Lin Li stepped out of his tent just as a gust of wind blew in his face.

It was now the early hours of the morning. Here, on the bank of a stream nestled among mountains and far from the bustling city, the sudden gust of wind felt chilling.

The chilly wind soothed Lin Li’s pounding heart, and before long, his turbulent thoughts began to fade away.

He glanced back at the tent, thought for a moment, and decided to take a walk, planning to return to sleep in a while.

The brilliant moon, high in the night sky, bathed the ground in a silvery glow, making it easy to see the path without a flashlight.

Lin Li left the campsite, walking along the bank toward the stream’s source.

Although this mountain range was within the safety zone and confirmed to be free of Mutant Beasts, ordinary creatures like snakes, insects, and rodents were still around.

To walk alone by a stream this late at night, heading into an even more secluded area, was something only a man as skilled and bold as Lin Li would dare. An ordinary person would never venture out alone like this.

The clear stream flowed past him. Peering into the water, he could see the beautiful, pristine reflection of the moon.

He followed the stream for a long way without realizing how far he’d gone. Then, Lin Li, who had come out to calm his mind, stopped and casually picked up a smooth, round stone from the ground.

PLOP.

The stone he tossed struck the moon’s reflection in the water, sending up a small splash.

About twenty minutes had passed since he’d left the camp. ’I should probably head back and get some sleep,’ Lin Li thought.

Just as he was about to turn back toward the camp, a piercing whistle suddenly split the air. A streak of pale golden light shot out from the lush forest by the stream.

"Hm?"

Since he was within the city’s safety zone, Lin Li hadn’t maintained the high level of vigilance he would have while hunting in the wilds. Thus, his reaction was a beat slow when he finally noticed something hurtling toward him.

An ordinary person facing such a surprise attack would have been a goner.

The ambusher must have thought their surprise attack would be a one-hit kill.

Unfortunately for them, the attacker’s strength was not on the same level as Lin Li’s. With his current cultivation at the Peak of Tier Two, Lin Li could still dodge the strike, even with a delayed reaction.

He took a step back and twisted his body. The pale golden streak of light shooting from the forest grazed his clothes and, with a soft THUD, plunged into the ground.

’A throwing knife?’

Lin Li frowned as he looked at the object embedded in the ground. He muttered the words to himself after the Spiritual Light on its surface faded, then turned to face the direction it had come from.

RUSTLE RUSTLE RUSTLE...

A rustling sound came from the dense forest, the sound of branches and leaves brushing against something.

Soon, a tall man wearing a black mask emerged from the trees.

The throwing knife had been aimed straight for his heart. If he hadn’t dodged it, it would have been fatal. The sheer malice of the attack kindled a spark of anger in Lin Li.

"Why did you attack me?" Lin Li asked, his face cold and his tone hostile as he stared at the black-masked man.

"..." Liu Menglong, the man in the black mask, said nothing. Beneath his mask, his expression was one of pure astonishment as he stared at Lin Li.

He had originally planned to wait until two or three in the morning before attacking the target’s tent. But just after midnight, he saw his target emerge and start walking alone toward a more secluded area.

This unexpected development prompted him to change his plan immediately, and he had stealthily followed him.

After following for a considerable distance, he saw his target about to turn back. He figured they were far enough from the other campers to act, so he had decisively thrown the knife, intending to end it in a single blow.

When a Second Order Middle Stage Cultivator ambushes an unsuspecting Tier One Peak Cultivator, it should, by all rights, be a one-hit kill. The outcome, however, completely defied Liu Menglong’s expectations. His target had actually dodged the ambush.

"Are you mute?" Lin Li snapped when the masked man just stared at him in silence.

The next second, before the words had even fully left his mouth, his enemy drew another throwing knife from his waist and attacked again with a flick of his wrist.

SWISH.

Infused with Spiritual Energy, the throwing knife glowed with a pale golden Spiritual Light, its sharpness enhanced. It sliced through the air, aimed straight for its target’s neck.

Seeing the silent enemy launch another vicious attack, Lin Li’s anger flared even hotter.

THUD.

With a quick sidestep, Lin Li easily dodged the attack, and the second knife plunged into the ground.

’Huh?’ Liu Menglong was inwardly stunned to see Lin Li dodge his attack for a second time.

Dodging the first attack could be dismissed as a coincidence, but dodging the second was far from ordinary.

Just as Liu Menglong was reeling from the surprise of his attack being dodged again, he saw Lin Li suddenly turn and flee at an incredible speed.
