Chapter 625: Chapter 392: An Oath by High-Five, Not to Be Broken Save for Force Majeure
’But if the boss ever made a move, with his cultivation at the Second Order Middle Stage, that guy wouldn’t stand a chance. He couldn’t possibly make a splash.’
Chen Xiaoyan observed Lin Li closely. The target was completely unscathed, and just a moment ago, he even had the leisure to be laughing and flirting with his girlfriend.
This led her to a thought: ’Maybe Liu Menglong didn’t make a move on the target last night.’
But then again, that didn’t seem right. The most important thing to Liu Menglong right now was completing this job and getting the final payment.
Besides, before Liu Menglong had left, he’d told her he was coming here to eliminate the target.
"Yan."
"Yes?"
"What should we do now?" Zhu Daqi asked.
Chen Xiaoyan thought for a moment before answering, "You have a point, and I was thinking the same thing. But your boss is missing now, and I have a feeling it has something to do with that guy."
"Yan, if you ask me, we shouldn’t be so hesitant. I’ll call the boys, and we’ll surround him, capture him, and torture the truth out of him. Then everything will be clear," Zhu Daqi proposed.
"No, we can’t do that. If a group of you goes to surround him, with his Tier One Peak cultivation, even if you manage to capture him in the end, it’s bound to cause a huge commotion. If things get out of hand and we attract the attention of the authorities, it won’t be worth the trouble." Chen Xiaoyan immediately rejected Zhu Daqi’s proposal.
"We’ll be careful. We won’t alert the authorities," Zhu Daqi said.
"I don’t believe a large group of you can surround him and get the job done without alerting the authorities," Chen Xiaoyan said calmly.
She came to this conclusion because she knew the subordinates Liu Menglong had recruited weren’t exactly top-tier material.
"Yan, if we keep being this indecisive, how are we ever going to find a clue about the boss!" Zhu Daqi said, disappointed that she had so decisively rejected his proposal.
"Don’t be hasty. We need to think this through carefully. Let’s go back for now," Chen Xiaoyan said.
Before she arrived, she had assumed Liu Menglong’s life was in danger because of Lin Li. But seeing Lin Li completely unharmed and acting as if nothing had happened made her initial assumptions waver.
Zhu Daqi nodded. He followed Chen Xiaoyan down the hillside, and they left. About ten minutes later, they were back at their car.
VROOOM...
The car started. Zhu Daqi turned it around and drove Chen Xiaoyan back the way they had come.
The atmosphere in the car was heavy on the way back. After a while, Zhu Daqi, who was driving, suddenly spoke to Chen Xiaoyan in the passenger seat.
"Yan, if the boss really is... gone, what are we going to do?"
Chen Xiaoyan, who had been meditating with her eyes closed, opened them at his question. She turned to look at him and said calmly,
"If it’s confirmed that your boss is gone, I’ll tell you what to do then. For now, don’t worry about it. Everything is business as usual. And one more thing—when we get back, don’t say a word about this to anyone else for the time being."
"Okay, Yan." Zhu Daqi said no more and focused on driving.
A little over half an hour later, the black sedan drove into the Urban Village slated for demolition.
Chen Xiaoyan went home. As Zhu Daqi watched her swaying hips disappear into the small, single-story house, a strange glint flashed in his eyes. He muttered quietly to himself,
"If the boss is really gone this time... that might actually be a good thing..."
...
Back home, Chen Xiaoyan walked into the living room, immediately turned on the air conditioner, and then picked up the pitcher on the table to pour herself a glass of water.
GLUG GLUG GLUG...
After downing the water in one go, Chen Xiaoyan set the glass on the coffee table. She then leaned back and sank heavily onto the sofa, her eyes gazing blankly at the ceiling as thoughts churned in her mind.
Now that she was alone, the calm expression on her face was gone.
’This is bad. If Liu Menglong is really in trouble, my superiors will definitely demand to know why I didn’t report his unauthorized actions immediately...’
An officer from the Heilin Society had told both Liu Menglong and Chen Xiaoyan to their faces when he assigned them to lie low in Rongcheng.
If either of them went off on their own and did something to jeopardize the undercover mission, the other would be held jointly responsible.
DRING DRING DRING...
The sudden ringing of the phone beside her snapped Chen Xiaoyan out of her turbulent thoughts.
She picked up her phone and glanced at the caller ID. It was an unfamiliar number.
"Hello?"
"It’s me."
"Who is this?"
"Hey now, Xiaoyan, you don’t even recognize my voice?"
"You’re... Wang Hao?!" Chen Xiaoyan’s mind raced for a second before she replied, pleasantly surprised.
"Yep," Wang Hao said with a laugh. "I heard you and Liu Menglong were sent to Rongcheng for a mission. You’re still there, right?"
"We are," Chen Xiaoyan replied.
"Good. I happen to be heading to Rongcheng on some business myself. I’ll be there tomorrow, so I’ll come find you two then," Wang Hao said.
"By the way, I just tried calling Liu Menglong, but it said his phone was out of service. Is he in the middle of something important?"
"..." Faced with Wang Hao’s question, Chen Xiaoyan suddenly didn’t know how to respond.
When Chen Xiaoyan didn’t say anything, Wang Hao thought the call had dropped. He pulled the phone away from his ear and glanced at the screen, only to see they were still connected.
"Why’d you go quiet? If it’s mission-related and not a good time, I don’t have to come see you."
SIGH... Chen Xiaoyan took a deep breath and let it out slowly. Then, in a heavy tone, she said, "Wang Hao, I have some bad news. I need you to keep it a secret."
"Go on. I’ll keep it secret..." Hearing the strange tone in Chen Xiaoyan’s voice, Wang Hao’s brow furrowed.
"Liu Menglong is in trouble," Xiaoyan said, delivering the terrible news.
"What happened? How could he be in trouble? What exactly is going on?" Wang Hao, being close to Liu Menglong, was shocked to hear his good friend was in trouble and immediately pressed for answers.
"This is what happened. A while ago, someone came to us..." Chen Xiaoyan proceeded to explain the entire situation to Wang Hao in detail.
She was telling Wang Hao everything without reservation precisely because she knew how close he and Liu Menglong were.
She hoped he could help her figure out what to do. After all, she could no longer handle this thorny issue on her own.
The deadline to report to their superiors was only a few days away, and both of them were required to be present to give their update.
If their superiors discovered Liu Menglong was absent, Chen Xiaoyan wouldn’t be able to hide the truth under questioning. They would be furious, and she would likely face severe punishment.
Her only hope of avoiding punishment was for Wang Hao to come up with a solution.
SIGH...
After Chen Xiaoyan finished her detailed explanation, she heard no reply from Wang Hao, only the sound of his ragged breathing.
From the sound of that unusually ragged breathing, Chen Xiaoyan could immediately picture Wang Hao’s anxious expression after hearing the news about his friend.
"Okay, I understand. Don’t do anything for now. Wait until I get to Rongcheng tomorrow, and we’ll talk in detail when we meet," Wang Hao said after more than a minute of silence, having suppressed his anxiety.
"Okay." Chen Xiaoyan nodded, and they ended the call.
She put her phone aside, a joyful smile spreading across her face.
Wang Hao was a Cultivator at the Second Order High Rank. The arrival of such a powerful fighter would be a tremendous help in dealing with the situation.
