Chapter 728: Chapter 441: The Growing Number of Bizarre Cases and Beware of Kidnappers
A silver-white van sped along under the dim yellow streetlights.
As the van approached the entrance to the residential complex, it began to slow down.
Lin Li turned the wheel, rounding a corner and entering the complex.
Across the street, Zhu Daqi stood by the roadside with a cigarette dangling from his mouth. A relaxed smile spread across his face as he watched the silver-white van with the familiar license plate enter the complex.
The target had just driven back into the complex without even glancing in his direction. Clearly, his surveillance hadn’t been discovered.
He pulled his phone from his pocket and dialed Chen Xiaoyan’s number.
"RING..."
The phone had only rung a few times before someone on the other end picked up.
"Hello."
"Yan, the guy, Lin Li, just got home."
"He didn’t notice you tailing him, did he?"
"He didn’t."
"Good. Keep watching him. Report to me immediately if anything happens."
"Got it, Yan."
After reporting on Lin Li’s status, he hung up and stuffed the phone back into his pocket.
Zhu Daqi uncouthly flicked his nearly finished cigarette butt onto the ground. Humming a little tune, he reached over to the passenger seat, grabbed the late-night snack he’d bought a while ago, and began to eat with great satisfaction.
The snack was cold, but now that the weight was off his mind, even a cold meal tasted delicious.
Just as Zhu Daqi was enjoying his snack, far behind him, a man holding an ice cream bar emerged from behind a large, leafy tree. He glanced toward the complex, then turned and walked away.
...
After driving into the complex, Lin Li parked the van, got out, and started walking toward his apartment building.
"Huh?"
As he was about to enter the stairwell of Building Three, he passed a greenbelt and spotted two small figures huddled close together, their heads bowed low.
The Little White Cat and the Little Black Cat were feasting on something when they suddenly heard the footsteps behind them stop. Sensing a gaze upon them, they stopped tearing at the large rat and turned to look.
"Oh, you’re eating! I won’t disturb you, then," Lin Li said to the two little strays with a chuckle before turning to leave.
"Meow... Little White, you didn’t notice that human behind us?" the Little Black Cat asked its companion, licking its lips.
"Meow... I was too busy eating to pay attention," the Little White Cat said, raising a paw to sheepishly scratch its cheek.
The two little ones then lowered their heads and went back to tearing at their freshly caught prey.
This big rat was an unlucky one. It had planned to invade the complex and start a family, but as soon as it entered, it ran right into the two little strays on patrol.
The outcome was obvious. Trapped by two natural predators, it had no chance of escape. In the end, it became the little ones’ dinner.
A moment later, the two little strays had devoured their prey, leaving nothing behind. Still not full, the Little Black Cat said,
"Meow... This big rat didn’t have much meat on it! It was barely a snack..."
The Little White Cat sat on the grass, watching a resident just back from a night shift push an electric scooter into the parking shed. Hearing its companion’s words, it replied casually.
"Meow... Later on, we can go to the park and catch some more rats. You can eat your fill then..."
"Meow... Zhou Tongtong said we shouldn’t eat too much at night because it’s bad for you. We should just eat until we’re half-full," the Little Black Cat said with a serious expression, recalling this piece of wisdom from one of its play sessions with Zhou Tongtong.
The Little White Cat shot its companion a look, considered this seriously for a moment, and replied, "Meow... We’re still growing. It’s fine for us to eat a full meal at night."
"Meow... Oh, that’s true! I feel like I’ve gotten a lot taller lately," the Little Black Cat said, rising up on its hind legs.
Seeing its companion stand up, the Little White Cat copied the motion. After comparing their heights, it said, "Meow... It’s not that much! You’re only a little bit taller than me."
The young woman who had just gotten off her night shift finished parking her electric scooter in the shed.
She was about to head home when she suddenly heard a series of high-pitched, kittenish meows coming from the nearby greenbelt. The sound immediately captivated her, and she turned her head to look.
"Wow..."
The young woman gasped in amazement. She quickly pulled out her phone, opened the camera app, and started recording the scene before her.
Two adorable little strays, one black and one white, were standing on their hind legs, facing each other and gesturing with their paws while letting out a constant stream of high-pitched meows.
The Little White Cat’s ears twitched. It turned its head and looked at the young woman filming them with her phone. Seeing what she was doing, it immediately spoke to its companion.
"Meow... That human is recording us! Let’s get out of here, quick!"
The Little Black Cat nodded. The two little ones then quickly darted toward a dark corner, out of the reach of the streetlights, and vanished from the young woman’s view.
"Aww... Why’d you run off so fast? Let me film a little longer!" the young woman called out regretfully as the two little strays disappeared.
