Chapter 761: Chapter 457: Superpower ’Invisible Force Field
TAP, TAP, TAP...
Zheng Qiuyi hurried into the bedroom in her slippers and sat on the edge of her daughter’s bed. Reaching out a pale, delicate hand, she gently caressed her daughter’s pretty face, her eyes filled with concern.
"Mmm..."
As the strange sensation in her body faded, her drowsiness receded like a tide. Su Yue’s long eyelashes fluttered a few times, and then she opened her eyes.
"Mom?!!" Bleary-eyed, Su Yue opened her eyes to find her mother sitting on the edge of her bed, stroking her cheek. Her expression was full of confusion.
"What are you and Dad...?"
Zheng Qiuyi quickly hid the worry in her eyes. A smile touched her lips, and the delicate hand stroking her daughter’s pretty face gave it a gentle pinch.
"It’s gotten dark, hasn’t it? Your father and I came to get you for dinner!"
"Oh." Su Yue nodded, then raised a hand to rub the cheek her mom had just pinched, complaining, "Mom, I’m a grown-up now. How can you still pinch my cheeks like I’m a little kid?"
"What do you mean, a grown-up? In my eyes, you’ll always be my little girl." Zheng Qiuyi stood up, crossing her arms and speaking to her daughter with loving eyes.
"Sigh..." Su Yue sighed helplessly. ’As her daughter, what can I do?’ she thought. ’If Mom wants to pinch my cheeks, I guess I’ll just let her pinch them a few times!’
Standing to the side, Su Chen just watched the mother-daughter interaction with an amused smile. He knew full well that he couldn’t open his mouth right now.
Otherwise, if his wife and daughter both asked him to play judge, he’d be in a tough spot. It was impossible to choose a side, and it would give him a killer headache...
"All right, hurry and get up! Let’s go downstairs to eat. We don’t want the food to get cold and have to be reheated," Zheng Qiuyi said to her daughter, uncrossing her arms.
Then, she and her husband left their daughter’s room and headed to the dining room downstairs.
Once her parents had left and she was alone in the room, Su Yue threw off the thin blanket, sat up, and frowned at the phone on her nightstand, muttering to herself.
’I have a feeling Mom and Dad are hiding something from me.’
Su Yue was no "silly, sweet, and naive" rich girl from a TV drama.
She was sharp enough to notice the worried look that sometimes appeared in her mother Zheng Qiuyi’s eyes, and it made her suspicious.
"Haaaah..."
She stood up, stretched her arms wide, and let out a long breath. She pushed her suspicions to the back of her mind for the time being. Her stomach was a little hungry, so filling it came first.
Su Yue slipped on her slippers and walked gracefully out of the bedroom.
...
The night was hazy. A silver-white van sped away from the border of a safe zone in the deserted outskirts, heading toward the lively, bustling heart of the city.
As Lin Li drove the van out of the deserted area, the sides of the street were first lit by the dim yellow glow of streetlights. Gradually, these were joined by a growing number of colorful neon signs.
Red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, violet—the neon lights of every color adorned the skyscrapers on both sides of the street, making it seem as if they were draped in dazzling, colorful robes.
Driving his van, Lin Li looked at the exteriors of the skyscrapers on either side. They looked a little different than before. He muttered to himself.
’The lights on the exterior walls of the skyscrapers in this area have all changed! The municipal budget must be pretty flush this year!’
Some twenty minutes later, a silver-white van drove into the Ping’an Garden District.
CREAK.
SLAM.
Lin Li parked the van in a space and got out, heading for the entrance of Building Three. He was carrying a plastic bag filled with many small, white objects.
"Meow..."
Two small figures were playing on the grass of a landscaped median. Hearing the meow, Lin Li immediately headed over.
There on the grass, a little black cat and a little white cat were staring at him with wide, shining eyes.
’Are these two little guys begging me for food?’
After a moment’s thought, Lin Li reached into the plastic bag he was carrying, pulled out two thumb-sized white bee pupae, and tossed them onto the grass in front of the two little cats.
When the Little White Cat and Little Black Cat saw Lin Li toss something toward them, they were startled and instantly leaped back several meters.
When they looked up at Lin Li again, the man had already turned and walked away, disappearing into the entrance of Building Three in the distance.
The Tiger Bee pupae were incredibly resilient. Despite being thrown and landing on the ground, they showed no signs of injury and wriggled energetically.
The two little cats approached the white pupae Lin Li had tossed onto the grass. They leaned in, sniffed at the wriggling morsels, and then each began to eat one.
"Meow... This is delicious!" Tiger Bee pupae were high-quality protein, and this was the Little Black Cat’s first time eating one. Its eyes lit up as it purred in delight.
"Meow... It really is good, but what is it?" the Little White Cat meowed, chewing the Tiger Bee pupa, curious about what delicious food Lin Li had given them.
While the two little cats were eating the Tiger Bee pupae, Lin Li was already riding the elevator up.
DING.
The elevator doors opened. After stepping out, Lin Li didn’t go to his own apartment right away but instead walked to his next-door neighbor Xia Qing’s door.
He raised his hand and pressed the doorbell, hearing it chime from inside the apartment.
"Tongtong, can you get the door for Mommy?" Xia Qing, busy cooking dinner in the kitchen, called out toward the living room. Her daughter was sitting on the sofa, engrossed in a cartoon.
"Okay!" Zhou Tongtong, dressed in her school uniform with her hair tied in a bun, answered in a bright voice. She hopped off the sofa and ran to the entryway.
She dragged a nearby chair over to the door, climbed onto it, and peered through the peephole.
"It’s Lin Li!"
Seeing that it was Lin Li, Zhou Tongtong hopped down from the chair and opened the door.
Standing outside, Lin Li heard the little girl’s voice and knew it was Zhou Tongtong opening the door.
CLICK.
The door swung open to reveal the adorable little girl, who greeted Lin Li with a cheerful grin. "Lin Li!!!"
"Zhou Tongtong, have you eaten dinner yet?" Lin Li asked the little girl with a smile.
"Not yet! Mommy’s still cooking. We’ll be eating in a little while," Zhou Tongtong replied. Then, very politely, she invited him in. "Lin Li, please come in."
Lin Li smiled and shook his head. "I can’t, I haven’t had dinner yet either. I need to get home and eat."
"You haven’t eaten either? You can eat with us!" Zhou Tongtong offered.
"I already ordered takeout; it’ll be here soon." On the way back, Lin Li had ordered a large meal from KFC. By his calculation, the delivery driver would probably arrive in about ten minutes.
"Oh." Zhou Tongtong nodded. "Lin Li, did you need something? I can go get my mom..."
"No need to get your mom. I actually came to give you a little treat." As he spoke, Lin Li bent down, opened the bag he was holding, and showed Zhou Tongtong what was inside.
"Aah! Giant bugs!!!"
When Zhou Tongtong saw the bag was full of plump, white, constantly wriggling pupae, she let out a shriek and quickly stumbled back two steps.
The little girl’s reaction didn’t surprise Lin Li in the slightest.
He had anticipated this. ’Zhou Tongtong has probably never eaten bee pupae in her life,’ he thought. ’Seeing them for the first time, she was bound to be scared.’
