I Was Summoned as the Weakest Hero, But I Awakened a Military System
Chapter 118: Return Fire
The choking smell of burning grain, ash, and pine smoke rolled heavily over the stone parapets of Port Solis.
Goddess Viona could take no more.
Her divine pride, nurtured over three centuries of unchallenged worship, had been stripped raw. She looked out at the tranquil, slate-gray warships resting insolently upon her holy sea. They had burned her foundries. They had collapsed her quarries. They had erased her granaries from thirty leagues away without shedding a single drop of blood. They sat there like cold iron tombstones, daring her to watch her empire rot from within.
"Enough," Viona hissed.
The word was barely a whisper, but it carried the weight of a snapping iron cable.
Beside her, Belis dropped to his knees in the dust. "L-Lady Viona? What are you—"
"I will not cower behind this glass bowl while insects burn my realm!" she screamed, her golden aura erupting with the violent fury of an unleashed tempest.
The ivory tiles beneath her feet cracked into webbed fractures. The silk curtains of the royal pavilion caught fire, instantly disintegrating into floating cinders. Her golden hair whipped wildly in a vortex of rising heat, and her eyes burned with pure, blinding celestial mana.
She stepped off the terrace into empty air.
Defying gravity, Viona drifted downward like a descending star, landing with a solid thud upon the forward stone breakwater of Port Solis.
The soldiers, dockworkers, and priests lining the battlements gasped in reverent awe, dropping to their knees along the seawall. She was standing at the outermost edge of her domain—right at the shimmering boundary line where the golden curve of the Aegis met the salt spray of the ocean.
Five miles out, the massive silhouette of the USS Gerald R. Ford sat completely still, its long, flat deck dark against the blue water.
"You hide behind long-range cowards’ iron," Viona snarled toward the open sea, her voice vibrating with raw divine power that shook the water beneath the docks. "You think you are gods of war because you strike from the clouds? Witness the power of an actual deity!"
She planted her feet wide upon the ancient granite breakwater and thrust both arms toward the heavens.
The ocean churned violently around the rocks. The ambient temperature along the harbor mouth rose by thirty degrees in seconds. The salt spray evaporated into hissing clouds of steam as Viona began channeling the deepest reservoir of her personal mana core.
Behind her back, seven concentric magic circles flared to life. They were not the pale gold of her barrier; they burned with the blinding, incandescent crimson of boiling magma.
"Heed the call of the eternal pyre!" Viona chanted, her voice ringing out across the waves like a bronze bell. "Tear the sky! Consume the iron sea! Roaring Phoenix: Quintuple Conflagration!"
The sea screamed.
From the center of the crimson magic arrays, five colossal birds of pure, liquid flame materialized in the air above the breakwater.
Each phoenix possessed a wingspan of over one hundred feet, forged from seventh-tier primordial fire that burned so hot the stone breakwater beneath them melted into glowing slag. Their eyes were white-hot suns, their talons crackled with concentrated heat, and when they opened their burning beaks, the sound was not a birdsong—it was the deafening roar of a volcanic eruption.
The soldiers on the walls cheered wildly, weeping with renewed devotion. "The Goddess has struck! The holy fire will melt their iron to slag!"
Viona pointed a trembling, manicured finger straight at the flat-topped titan on the horizon.
"Burn!" she shrieked.
The five fiery titans beat their massive wings, kicking up twin tidal waves of boiling steam as they surged through the edge of the Aegis and rocketed out over the open ocean. They flew abreast, skimming barely fifty feet above the rolling waves at blinding speed, leaving boiling trenches of white froth across the sea surface.
Their trajectory was locked directly onto the center mass of the USS Gerald R. Ford.
Five miles away, deep inside the Combat Information Center of the USS Gerald R. Ford, the serene hum of air conditioning was instantly broken by an urgent electronic chime.
"Warning! High-energy thermal signatures detected off the breakwater," the tactical action officer shouted, his fingers flying across his console. "Five distinct airborne contacts outbound from target grid Alpha-Zero! Velocity: Mach 1.8 and accelerating! Radar cross-section is irregular, but thermal sensors are pegging the scale—exhaust temperatures exceed three thousand degrees Celsius!"
Rear Admiral Donovan leaned forward over the central situation table, his eyes narrowing behind his glasses.
"They’re coming fast," Donovan said calmly. "Profiles?"
"They look like solid plasma projectiles or biological heat blooms, Admiral! They’re tracking dead-center on the carrier!"
"Aegis weapon system is fully auto," Donovan ordered without a flicker of panic. "Engage and splash them."
"Aegis auto-engagement initiated! Firing!"
A mile to the east of the carrier, the Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS Winston S. Churchill responded with mechanical, unfeeling speed.
Its AN/SPY-1D phased-array radar had locked onto the five roaring firebirds the microsecond they crossed the boundary line. The fire control computer calculated the intercept vectors in four milliseconds.
CLANG-CLANG-CLANG-CLANG!
The steel forward VLS hatches snapped open.
A deafening series of roars split the sea air as four RIM-162 Evolved Sea Sparrow Missiles (ESSM) and four RIM-174 Standard Extended Range Active Missiles (SM-6) erupted from the deck in vertical pillars of fire and smoke.
The solid-fuel rocket motors ignited instantly, accelerating the interceptors to over Mach 3.5 in the blink of an eye. The missiles pitched violently downward, forming a low-altitude intercept spread across the waves.
Aboard the cruiser USS Bunker Hill, two more missile hatches emptied, sending another four interceptors into the air.
Twelve sleek, radar-guided warheads carved white, razor-straight lines against the blue sky, hurtling toward the incoming inferno.
Back on the stone breakwater, Viona watched with a triumphant sneer as her five majestic phoenixes roared across the bay. But her smile froze when she saw the sudden eruption of smoke from the gray escort ships.
"More flying iron arrows?" Viona scoffed weakly, though a sudden pit opened in her stomach. "You think puny metal darts can pierce primordial flame?!"
The intercept took place two miles out from the fleet.
The first two SM-6 missiles slammed directly into the chest of the lead phoenix at combined closing speeds exceeding Mach 5.
BOOM!
The missile’s blast-fragmentation warhead detonated on proximity, releasing thousands of tungsten shrapnel cubes accompanied by an immense explosive overpressure wave. The kinetic shockwave disrupted the delicate magical mana matrix binding the liquid flame together.
The lead phoenix didn’t simply absorb the hit—the spell’s internal equilibrium shattered.
With a deafening KER-BLAM, the first firebird detonated prematurely over the open water, collapsing into a harmless, expanding cloud of yellow sparks and steam that rained down into the sea.
"What?!" Viona choked, taking an involuntary step back onto the hot stone.
Before she could process the failure, the remaining interceptors arrived.
BOOM! BOOM! BOOM!
Three more ESSM missiles hit the second and third phoenixes simultaneously. The dual detonations tore through the fiery wings, severing the mana flow. The two mythical beasts shrieked—a sound like grinding metal—before their bodies dissolved into roaring, chaotic fireballs that blew the ocean waves ten feet into the air, vanishing without touching a single ship.
The fourth phoenix swerved erratically, its wild flame licking the clouds as it tried to push past the smoke.
From the port side of the Gerald R. Ford, the Phalanx Close-In Weapon System (CIWS)—a radar-guided, six-barrel 20mm Vulcan Gatling gun—whined into life.
BRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRT!
A continuous, laser-straight beam of white-hot tungsten armor-piercing tracer rounds tore across the ocean at four thousand five hundred rounds per minute. The stream of heavy metal bullets shredded straight through the phoenix’s blazing head. The sheer kinetic density disintegrated the magical construct into a shower of harmless red embers.
The fifth and final phoenix was intercepted barely twelve hundred yards from the Bunker Hill by a direct SM-6 strike, detonating in a flash of purple-orange light that was instantly swallowed by the cold sea mist.
Total elapsed time from launch to interception: eighteen seconds.
The ocean fell dead silent once more.
Five miles out, the massive steel carrier sat completely untouched, its flight deck clear, its gray hull gleaming quietly in the afternoon sun. Not a single spark had scorched its paint.
On the breakwater of Port Solis, Goddess Viona stood frozen.
Her arms were still half-raised. The molten stone around her boots hissed softly against the tide. Her seventh-tier spell was reduced to nothingness by a mere mortal weapon.
"Very well, let’s try another magic."
