Chapter 1378: Chapter 541: Full Bellies, Fireworks, and New Year’s Eve’s Special Midnight Snack – Pan-Fried Dumplings!
"Dad, Mom, I’ve found a job for you."
Zeng Xiaoqi came out from the room next door, looked at her father smoking and said this, then sat next to Qi Siming, picked up chopsticks, and started devouring the delicious dishes on the table.
Earlier, she had wanted to flip the dining table over, but thinking about Qi Siming’s hard work for the day, she held back and only broke a bowl.
Qi Siming had already cleaned up the bowl shards, and Zeng’s mother sat beside sighing and lamenting.
This year was meant to be joyful, with their daughter bringing home a tall, handsome boyfriend who works at Yanjing Hotel, making them the envy of the village.
But before they could celebrate for two days, a group of people swarmed like flies, wanting Qiqi’s boyfriend to help arrange jobs.
Hardly saying anything after meeting and already asking for jobs—how impolite could they be?
Zeng’s father stubbed out his cigarette in the ashtray, and curiously asked:
"What kind of job?"
"A job in Beijing, at a Ginkgo Eco Garden, with much better prospects than staying at home."
To prevent her parents from clinging to their homeland and refusing, she lied:
"I’ve secretly bought a house in Beijing, and the monthly mortgage is over ten thousand, so if you earn some money, it could ease my pressure..."
If under the guise of benefiting her parents, they might not want to go.
But if she mentions the heavy mortgage pressure and asks for help, there would be no problem. As parents, they would agree without hesitation.
Sure enough, upon hearing about the house purchase, Zeng’s father looked surprised and then turned to Zeng’s mother.
The couple exchanged looks, and Zeng’s mother got up and went to the bedroom, shortly returning with a deposit booklet:
"Why didn’t you discuss such a big matter like buying a house with us? Here’s 270,000, the password is the last six digits of your ID, take it, make sure the mortgage doesn’t fall behind. You’re leaving on the fifth, right? Get two more tickets for the fifth; your dad and I will go too. Whatever the job, as long as it earns money, we’re not coming back."
Zeng’s father nodded, then chuckled to Qi Siming:
"Xiao Qi, I’m sorry for the awkward situation... Let me try your cooking; I’ve been craving it all day."
Without outsiders, it’s easier for the family to talk.
Qi Siming served soup to the elders while busying himself, recounting his father’s misfortune.
He said:
"If it’s genuine skill, I can get him into places like Fishing Platform, Yanjing Hotel, or Lin Ji’s Food, but if it’s just to laze around, I can’t agree. My family has already suffered huge losses; my dad almost ended up in jail, so we really can’t go down the nepotism path again."
Zeng’s father never thought nepotism could bring such consequences.
Thankfully, he didn’t agree; if he had, the couple would have sleepless nights again.
One more reason Qi Siming didn’t agree was that, during his stay at Zeng’s family these few days, he didn’t feel that Xiao Wu respected Zeng Xiaoqi’s parents at all.
Every day, he either freeloaded or asked for things, took things without permission, and even wanted to rummage through Zeng Xiaoqi’s bag but was stopped.
It was during this stay that Qi Siming realized that it wasn’t appropriate to get physical at his girlfriend’s house the first time.
If it were in Beijing, this rebellious youth, who was donning dyed hair and skull earrings two months ago, would have smashed a chair over him.
Dirty bastard, how dare you touch my girlfriend’s bag?
Zeng Xiaoqi looked at the table full of dishes and said:
"People used to joke that New Year’s Eve dinner leftovers would last till the third day of the new year; I reckon this table won’t be finished until the fifth."
Meanwhile, Shen Jiayue whispered to Lin Xu over dinner:
"Xu Bao, Yan Bao just messaged saying she wants Xiaoqi’s parents to work at Ginkgo Garden; if you can’t arrange it, she’ll find another job."
Ginkgo Garden is a good choice — not busy, and they don’t have to entertain anyone.
They can keep company with Shang Weixing and his wife, avoiding the dull loneliness without anyone to talk to.
Actually, even if they don’t go to Ginkgo Garden, other opportunities are available, like working as janitors at Joyful Media to be around Zeng Xiaoqi.
But having a famous director’s parents as janitors wouldn’t sound good, nor would it be convenient for company management.
So, relatively speaking, Ginkgo Garden is more suitable.
Zeng Xiaoqi won’t be busy and can reach it easily by bus, making it possible for the family to see each other anytime, which is much better than most workers struggling in Beijing.
Lin Xu curiously asked:
"What’s the situation? Are Xiaoqi’s parents coming to Beijing to work?"
Shen Jiayue briefly explained the situation.
Upon hearing this, Lin Xu agreed:
"Alright, no problem; they can also take care of a few small animals. Veterinarians will check them regularly; feeding them regularly is easy."
While chatting, Chen Meijuan and her two aunts came in with boiled dumplings.
"We rinsed the dumplings with hot water; they’re not sticky. Eat as much as you like; if it’s not enough, we’ll cook more. We’ve filled an entire freezer, so there’s plenty."
Actually, the table’s dishes are already more than enough, but the dumplings are a must-eat.
Lin Xu poured some tomato vinegar into his plate, drizzled it with two spoonfuls of chili oil, and as soon as he stirred it up, Shen Jiayue dipped a dumpling in without hesitation:
"Wow, it’s deliciously sour and spicy!"
Lin Xu ate a dumpling filled with fennel, then a piece of spicy-sour tripe, and drank a sip of juice, feeling utterly comfortable.
