Chapter 1483: Chapter 575: Making Savory Porridge with Soy Sauce Duck! What’s It Like to Have a Social Butterfly Cat at Home?
When she sat down, Lin Xu brought over Egg pancakes, soy-pickled cucumbers, little kimchi and other side dishes for the porridge, plus two pickled cabbage and Soy Sauce meat buns they’d brought back from the shop yesterday.
Reheated, the buns smelled even better, and the pickled cabbage flavor was more satisfying.
Shen Jiayue picked up a spoon and first tasted a mouthful of the porridge in her bowl.
The unique savory fragrance of Soy Sauce Duck paired with the umami of Shrimp, plus the fresh taste of greens—one spoonful and your mouth floods with saliva.
"Wow, this is so good. Next time Dad and Mom stay over here, we’ve got to let them try it too."
Even though she’d already mentally prepared herself, once the rice porridge went down, her heart was still filled with pure surprise.
Lin Xu tasted a bite of Egg pancake and said to Shen Jiayue:
"As long as you like it, I can make it often from now on."
Apart from having to get up a bit earlier, making this porridge is actually pretty simple. You can even leave it simmering gently on the stove and go upstairs to grab a second sleep, no problem.
Though the gas alarm in the kitchen has to stay on. If the flame goes out and the gas keeps leaking, that’d be way too dangerous.
Shen Jiayue drank two spoonfuls of porridge, then picked up a piece of duck meat to taste. The duck was also delicious, especially thanks to being air-dried first— even though it had already been stewed, the texture was still tender and flavorful, soft and melty.
After finishing a perfect breakfast, Lin Xu tidied up the kitchen, then picked up Dundun, now wearing its bow tie, took the elevator downstairs, and drove toward the West Second Ring.
"How old is this master? Don’t tell me the whole big family lives together?"
Even though Dundun isn’t too bothered by noisy environments, it doesn’t exactly like them either. The shop’s customers all basically know this, so when they take photos or play with Dundun, they always pick moments when it’s in a playful mood. Sometimes when they see it sleeping, they’ll deliberately slow their steps and lower their voices, afraid of waking it up.
Such a cute little spirit—of course the customers don’t want to disturb its sweet dreams.
Shen Jiayue said:
"He lives alone. There’s an auntie who helps with the cooking. His personality seems a bit withdrawn... artists like him all kind of have that temperament."
Once they reached the West Second Ring, Lin Xu followed the navigation, driving to the entrance of a hutong.
He went in, parked the car in a roadside parking spot.
Holding Dundun, he got out of the car and walked to the gate of a courtyard house. There was a little plaque hanging on the door:
[Lao Deng Jade Carving]
Lao Deng?
Looks like he’s not young.
Lin Xu held Dundun and pressed the doorbell next to the main gate.
The piece of jade and the black-and-white stones Shen Guofu uses as chess pieces had already been delivered in advance, with full payment made. Old Shen never cares about money, only about quality.
The reason they chose this Lao Deng Jade Carving place, besides its good reputation, was mainly because its quote was twice as high as another studio’s.
Upholding the principle of "if it’s expensive, there’s a reason," they went with this one.
Just from this consumption mindset, you can see why some businesses like to "harvest" rich people’s Chives.
He was still spacing out when footsteps sounded from inside. A woman in her forties opened the door and asked gently:
"And you are?"
"We’re Dundun’s parents, the ones who booked the Jade carving. My surname is Shen. I called yesterday."
Hearing that, the woman immediately understood:
"Welcome, Miss Shen. This is the cat we’re doing the Jade carving of, right? It looks so majestic... Please, both of you, come with me. Mr. Deng is inside, taking photos of a new piece with some friends, so you might have to wait a bit."
Once Lin Xu carried Dundun inside, he realized this was quite a large courtyard house.
A covered walkway ran around the courtyard, with whole walls of big glass panes beside it so you could clearly see the flowers and trees, yet not feel the cold.
The courtyard was pretty big, at least an acre, with a ring of rooms around it. He didn’t know if there was a back courtyard.
Even if there wasn’t, just this courtyard alone would be worth a fortune.
This location, this size, and these quaint old buildings—he guessed it was close to a hundred million.
Sure enough, art is a game only the wealthy can afford to play. Without some family background and funds, stepping into the art world on a whim mostly means going hungry.
Soon, they were led into a classically styled living room, furnished with various artworks and quite a few Jade carving pieces. The display shelves were also lined with trophies and such.
As soon as Dundun went in, it jumped down, tail lifted high, wandering all around the living room, occasionally hopping onto tables to examine the Jade carving ornaments up close.
Shen Jiayue said:
"Other people’s kitties go all stiff and shaky in unfamiliar environments, but our little lord here? Total social-butterfly cat, not scared of anything anywhere."
Lin Xu rubbed Dundun’s head:
"Maybe it just knows no one can hurt it."
This is a little cat with its Luck Value maxed out—it’s hard for it to run into danger even if it tried.
So there’s nothing for it to be scared or nervous about.
Soon, the auntie brought over tea and added:
"Do you need us to prepare a litter box for the cat? Yesterday Mr. Deng told me to buy one, and I also bought some litter. I don’t know which brand this little cat prefers."
Damn, expensive really does have its logic—this service is flawless.
Lin Xu said:
"We brought a disposable litter box, it’s in the car. If you’re not busy right now, I can just go grab it. You really don’t need to trouble yourselves this much."
Even though they were paying customers, this level of meticulous service still made Lin Xu a bit unaccustomed.
Plus, Dundun is already used to the unscented corn litter that Shen Jiayue bought. Switching to another brand or type would probably make it uncomfortable.
He stood up, ready to go out, when a voice came from a nearby room:
