I'm the Only Magus in This Witch World
Chapter 87: A Bloodline Trait That Can Grow Infinitely (Golden Ticket & Power Stone Bonus)
A while ago, while lying on the ground and hiding, Magna wasn’t just hiding. He was also observing the Faceless Witch.
Lying within the tall grass, his eyes could make out the Witch’s half-burned clothes and even her slightly scorched hat.
But it wasn’t only her clothes that had been damaged by those two fire pillar spells Morrigan had cast before.
There were burn marks across her whole body. Even where her face should have been, on the featureless, oval expanse of her exposed skull, he could see deep cracks and scorched bone.
Her walk showed clear damage as well. Her legs stumbled, and one foot didn’t seem to move properly at all, dragging slightly behind her.
When Magna looked more closely at that foot, he saw it had turned completely black, as if it had suffered frostbite.
This made him realize his earlier spell, Glacial Calamity, had actually left a serious injury on her.
’If I can cast that spell again, there’s a good chance we can actually kill her.’ Magna thought silently.
The fact that he hadn’t heard or seen the Faceless Witch cast a single spell so far also gave him more hope about his plan.
Witches had painfully slow mana regeneration, and since he hadn’t seen any mana boosting food or anything edible in this place, he figured the Faceless Witch’s mana reserve had to be depleted long ago, or at least painfully low right now.
"We can kill that Witch?" Renna couldn’t quite bring herself to believe it.
But once Magna started telling her what he had just noticed about her condition and his guess about her mana reserves, a small hope began to form.
Still, none of that explained why he wanted all of her mana rich food though. "What’s your plan? Why you need to eat all my supplies?"
If anything, it should have been Renna who kept them to restore her own mana, since she would be the one casting the main attack spells while Magna tanked at the frontlines using his physical body.
But Magna already had his answer ready.
Giving her a helpless look, he sighed and said. "Right, I never told you my bloodline trait."
Renna’s interest and curiosity spiked instantly. "What is it?"
She had already caught herself wondering more than once what kind of bloodline trait could possibly make him so strong, and now her chance had finally come to find out.
"But you can’t tell anyone." His voice dropped to a whisper, his eyes scanning the area to check if anyone was listening. "Lady Celeste, even Faye, doesn’t know this."
Renna nodded first, all her body tense, feeling the weight of the secret she was about to hear, but then paused for a moment and asked. "Wait. Weren’t you and Faye contracted?"
She had always assumed Magna was her Shadow, not knowing Faye had failed her trial and wasn’t even a proper Witch at the moment.
Magna shook his head.
For a second, a smile appeared on Renna’s face, but it disappeared before Magna could notice, as he continued.
"My bloodline trait lets me improve my body in several ways by eating mana rich food."
That was genuinely shocking as Renna asked the first question that came to mind, still in shock. "What family do you actually come from?"
She had never heard of a bloodline trait that could be improved like this. Her immediate assumption, like anyone else’s, was that he belonged to a big, very big, prestigious family.
Sure, with enough practice, someone could master their trait, but that wasn’t the same as making it grow stronger over time.
It sounded like a cheat, a power with no real limit.
"Shh, keep your voice down." Magna put his hand over her mouth again, checking their surroundings.
Renna’s face turned slightly red at the touch of his hand, and the fact that he was sharing a secret he had never told anyone before made her chest fill with feelings she hadn’t felt before.
Magna shared this part of his secret mostly because he was unsure how long it would take Celeste and Rowena to rescue them. He couldn’t just sit and wait, hoping things would work out.
There was also another reason.
Either way, this was bound to come out on its own eventually, even if no one at the mansion had uncovered it yet.
He even suspected that the black-robed, hat-wearing Witch and her shadow had already found something out.
So by telling her it was a bloodline trait, he wanted to see her reaction, whether she would believe it or not, and also wanted to start somewhere, revealing this smaller secret so he could keep hiding the bigger ones later.
After finally taking his hand off her mouth, Renna started speaking again, this time in a whisper. "So how much do you actually need to eat, and what kind of power will you get?"
She was clearly excited as she asked, looking at Magna like a surprise egg, not knowing what would come out of it.
He was already strong, so strong that he had beaten her one sidedly back in the training arena. So if he could become even stronger than that, she started to genuinely believe they might actually be able to kill the Faceless Witch.
Just the thought that she could get her revenge for her mother, or at least be part of it with her own hands, was enough to make her body tremble with excitement and impatience.
But Magna shook his head. "I don’t know. It’s random every time, so I can’t tell until it actually happens."
The answer was uncertain, but it was already enough for Renna.
She handed him the pouch full of red pills, and said, pulling out more from the pockets of her robe. "Eat these first, and if it’s not enough, just tell me."
As Magna watched all the things she kept pulling out of her pockets, potions, snacks, fruits, his eyes lit up more and more.
’Just how big are her pockets?’
He had finally discovered one of the traits of Witch robes, that their pockets carried some kind of spatial spell woven into them.
