Chapter 477: Living with Guan Yun

“We’re only looking for one male apprentice here.”

Bodhisattva Guan Yun said, “Tell me why you want to come to the medical hall.”

One of the young men was dressed quite well, suggesting a decent background. He said rather lecherously that he came because he admired Doctor Yun.

Xu Lei saw Bodhisattva Guan Yun frown at this. He hadn’t expected the young man to keep rambling on.

Bodhisattva Guan Yun then cut him off directly, saying he probably wasn’t a good fit.

Then she asked the second young man.

The second young man didn’t dare say anything out of line. He said earnestly that he wanted to learn medicine here, and at the same time, find a job to support his family.

Next, Bodhisattva Guan Yun looked at Xu Lei.

“I know I’m the youngest, and probably the weakest physically, but I’m still quite strong.”

Xu Lei immediately tried to make his case. “I’m a refugee. My family died in the war. My father was killed by a Martial Artist, and I was separated from my mother in the chaos. I just want to find a place to settle down. All I ask for is a full meal!

“Besides that, I hope to learn medicine here. I have no talent for Martial Arts Training. My Po Position is blocked and can’t be opened. In this day and age, a foundation in Immortal Martial arts is needed everywhere.

‘So I thought, if I learn medicine, I might gain a valuable skill. Even if the world descends into chaos again, I’ll be able to survive.

“After all, medicine is very useful in turbulent times! Really, I don’t need a wage, just let me eat my fill! And learn medicine! Doctor, please give me a chance!”

Xu Lei spoke with great sincerity, and his face even held a pitiable expression. After all, Xu Lei was still just a child, and he still had the right to play the weakness card to gain sympathy.

Bodhisattva Guan Yun would never have guessed that the child before her was the very same person who had experienced the explosion of the Celestial Palace with her all those years ago.

And now, she was slightly moved after hearing his words.

“Alright, you can stay.”

Then, Bodhisattva Guan Yun said directly, “To the other two, my apologies, but we don’t need so many people right now.”

“No wages? Isn’t that just cheating?”

The second young man said, “Sigh, forget it. I’m not going to compete with a refugee like you.”

“I can work without wages too!”

The first young man exclaimed, “I can even pay for my own meals! I’ll work for free!”

But it was no use. In the end, the medical hall only kept Xu Lei.

“Thank you, Doctor. I’ll be sure to work hard from now on.”

Watching the two leave in disappointment, Xu Lei added earnestly, “And I’ll study medicine diligently!”

At this moment, Xu Lei genuinely wanted to learn medicine; he wasn’t just saying it.

Although Xu Lei had lived five lives before, he had never actually studied medicine.

He had thought it was useless back then and had focused solely on Cultivation, but now he realized it might still be useful.

Bodhisattva Guan Yun nodded and had the woman from before help get Xu Lei settled.

“Lei Xu, it’s good that you have the heart for it. You seem like a sensible boy.”

The woman who had been at the first interview smiled and said, “Miss Yun chose you, so you’ll be living here from now on. Your wage is one hundred copper coins a month! Do a good job. Miss Yun said that if you do really well later on, she’ll give you a raise!”

That’s right, Xu Lei’s name was now Lei Xu.

This was the identity he had created for himself.

After all, he couldn’t use his previous identity while traveling the world.

“I get a wage?”

Xu Lei was a little surprised. “Didn’t I say I don’t need a wage?”

“Miss Yun said to give it to you, so just take it.”

The woman continued, “It’s also because business at the medical hall isn’t that great. After all, many people in the world now practice Ancient Immortal Martial Arts, so their bodies are much healthier than before. Some Innate Powerhouses and Grandmasters rarely ever get sick. Even if they lose a hand or a foot, they can grow it back themselves! That’s why we can’t give you much of a wage. But because Miss Yun started treating people in the area many years ago, our medical hall still has a certain reputation and clientele. So don’t you worry, the medical hall should be able to support you.”

She led Xu Lei deep into the medical hall’s inner courtyard and assigned him a small room to live in.

Xu Lei said a few words of thanks and accepted everything.

In truth, Xu Lei didn’t really care about the wage.

After all, he still had a fair amount of gold and silver in his Qiankun Cloth Bag.

But since they were offering, there was no need to keep refusing.

「In the blink of an eye, a year passed.」

Xu Lei was now over thirteen years old.

His body had grown quite a bit.

He had shot up in height as well.

He was already over 1.5 meters tall.

For the past year, Xu Lei had been staying at the Yunlai Medical Hall.

Every day, he secretly continued his Cultivation, accumulating his Magical Power.

During the day, he helped out at the medical hall.

It wasn’t particularly hard work.

It was mostly just helping to chop firewood, move things, keep the books, write out some prescriptions, and check various medicinal herbs.

Sometimes, he would help fill prescriptions according to the formulas.

Because Xu Lei was genuinely eager to learn, wasn’t foolish, and was well-literate, Bodhisattva Guan Yun also liked to keep him around.

Xu Lei discovered that her medical skills were actually quite advanced.

You see, the medicine she practiced was purely mundane, ancient medicine.

It wasn’t any kind of Magical Power-based healing.

He didn’t know when she had learned such skills.

Xu Lei really wanted to ask about her past.

‘But if I open my mouth, wouldn’t I expose myself?’ So, he didn’t ask anything.

Of course, by now, Xu Lei had already discovered that Bodhisattva Guan Yun was indeed practicing Ancient Immortal Martial Arts.
