"I must disagree with you, Yuan," she said softly.

Lin Yuan paused, his hand hovering over the board, a faint crease of curiosity forming between his brows. "Disagree?"

"You say the King represents the Dao Heart," Bai Qingyue explained, her gaze rising from the board to lock onto his deep purple eyes. "You say it is vulnerable, that it requires the pawns and knights to throw away their lives to shield it. That is how the Heavenly Dao wants us to view it. But if a Dao Heart is truly Unshaken, if it is truly absolute... it does not hide behind mortal dust."

She reached out with a steady hand, her fingers unwavering despite the weight of what she was about to do.

She picked up her Queen, the most versatile and powerful piece on the board, representing the myriad adaptations of divine skills, and placed it directly into the path of Lin Yuan’s straight-moving Rook. Her movements were unhurried, deliberate, as though she had already lived through this exact moment a hundred times in her mind.

It was an undeniable, catastrophic sacrifice. She was giving up her most powerful weapon for seemingly nothing. Across the low table, Lin Yuan’s expression flickered, the barest trace of surprise breaking through his usual composure.

"The Great Dao is not about preserving the strongest weapon, Yuan," Bai Qingyue whispered, her eyes shining with intense, piercing clarity. "As you taught me, to fulfill the Dao Heart, one must not conform to the rules of the Heavens. The rules of this board expect me to save my Queen. They scream at me to retreat. But I choose to sacrifice it, because the true anchor of my formation..."

She gestured toward her black King, which she had quietly maneuvered during their previous exchanges, not into a hidden corner, but into a central, aggressive position that perfectly supported a cascading trap of pawns and knights.

"...the true anchor is the Dao Heart itself," she finished. "It does not hide. It dictates the reality of the board."

Lin Yuan stared at the board, his eyes narrowing as he traced every possible line of consequence with the same rigor he would apply to a genuine battlefield. If he took her Queen with his Rook, her Knight would swing forward in an unpredictable L-shaped attack, bypassing his defensive pawns. Her Bishop would simultaneously cut across the board, locking down his escape routes. His own King, his Dao Heart, would be completely trapped in exactly three moves.

There was no counter. Nothing he could deploy could reverse the momentum. The trap was flawless. He ran through the sequence once more, searching for some overlooked variable, some hidden flaw in her design, and found none.

Lin Yuan slowly withdrew his hand from the board.

He looked at the woman sitting across from him. He saw a woman who possessed no active cultivation, a woman whose cultivation had been shattered, whose physical body was bound to a wheelchair. Yet in the realm of pure insight, in her conceptual understanding of the myriad forms of the Great Dao, she had just outmaneuvered him.

Yes, he had not put much effort into the game. He had deliberately held back, offering only fragments of his understanding to probe her comprehension of cultivation and the Dao. He had never intended to crush her with his knowledge, but rather to guide her, allowing her own insights to develop through their conversation and the game.

Even so, the result remained astonishing.

She was now a mortal.

Her cultivation had been completely shattered, and yet she had managed to stand on equal footing in the realm of pure Dao comprehension.

For the first time, Lin Yuan truly understood just how monstrous Bai Qingyue’s talent had been. A quiet, humbling realization settled over him, one that no battlefield victory had ever managed to provoke.

Her cultivation was gone.

Her meridians were broken.

Her body was fragile.

But her mind remained untouched.

And perhaps that was the greatest fortune of all.

"You sacrificed the illusion of power to secure the absolute reality of victory," Lin Yuan murmured, profound awe coloring his tone, his gaze still fixed on the trap laid so elegantly before him.

"I simply refused to conform to what the white pieces expected of me," she smiled gently, her eyes crinkling at the corners, clearly delighting in the rare sight of her husband so thoroughly caught off guard.

Lin Yuan let out a sudden, joyous laugh. It was a loud sound that rarely escaped him, one that seemed to startle even the quiet air of the pavilion around them. He reached across the low table, taking her hands in his own, pressing his forehead against the knuckles of her fingers.

"You are truly a peerless genius, Qingyue," Lin Yuan breathed, his voice thick with admiration.

"Consider it a humbling lesson before your next preliminary round, husband," she teased, a bright, musical laugh escaping her lips. "Never underestimate a pawn that refuses to die, and never assume the King is merely waiting to be saved."

Lin Yuan smiled, a deep, resonant warmth filling his chest. The absolute peace of this moment, the profound connection they shared, was worth more than many things in the Central Continent. Outside, the political storm still raged through Sky Jade City, but within these four walls, none of it seemed to matter at all.

As he continued to hold her hands, gazing into her eyes, a mechanical chime resonated within his Sea of Consciousness.

[Ding!]

Lin Yuan’s eyes flickered slightly as a mountain of wealth was instantly deposited into the space of his storage ring, though the notification barely registered against the warmth still lingering in his chest.

He looked at Bai Qingyue, his smile deepening into something truly profound.

"Would you care for another game, my genius?" Lin Yuan asked softly. "I believe I require a chance to redeem my honor."

"Set up the board, Yuan," she smiled, her eyes sparkling with competitive delight, already reaching to gather the scattered pieces back into their velvet-lined compartments. "But be warned. I wouldn’t go easy on you this time."
