In the quiet stillness of the master suite, Lin Yuan’s deep purple eyes opened. The soft, ambient light of the hovering celestial-pearls caught the flawless contours of his face.

Beside him, Bai Qingyue breathing was a slow, perfect rhythm, her black hair spilling across the pillows like a river of dark light.

Lin Yuan then carefully disentangled himself from the warm embrace of his wife, ensuring his movements were as weightless and silent as a possible. He donned his pristine black and white robes, the fabric settling perfectly over his body.

The second preliminary round awaited. The board was about to shrink, and the might of the Central Continent were about to bare their fangs.

Lin Yuan stepped out of the master suite, traversing the silent corridors of the eastern royal pavilion. He intended to proceed to the grand hall, seeking the quiet clarity of morning tea before the theater of the Grand Court commenced.

As he entered the sprawling grand hall, he found that he was not the first to seek the morning’s solitude.

Lord Zhao Shenming sat at the head of a massive table. The provincial Lord was dressed in his formal provincial robes, meticulously preparing a pot of spiritual lotus tea. His movements were precise, practiced, and deeply meditative, pouring the boiling spring water over the glowing green leaves with the solemnity of a monk performing a sacred rite.

"You are awake early, Daoist Lin," Lord Zhao spoke, his voice a low, resonant rumble that echoed softly off the pillars. He did not look up from the teapot, his focus entirely on the delicate balance of the brew. "I had assumed you would spend every available moment resting. Today will test the absolute limits of your foundation."

Lin Yuan walked slowly into the hall, his footsteps making absolutely no sound. He took a seat opposite the Provincial Lord.

"Rest is a concept for those whose foundations are still settling, Lord Zhao," Lin Yuan replied, his tone smooth, carrying the absolute authority of the Unshaken Stage. "My cultivation has found its equilibrium. I merely seek the clarity of the morning."

Lord Zhao nodded slowly, lifting the teapot and pouring a stream of fragrant tea into a small cup before sliding it across the table surface.

"Drink," Lord Zhao offered. "It is the Azure Lotus blend, cultivated in the deepest spiritual springs of my homeland. It calms the mind and settles the spirit. And a grounded mind is a weapon sharper than any celestial sword."

Lin Yuan picked up the cup, bringing it to his lips. He took a slow sip, allowing the warm, earthy liquid to wash over his palate. It was, as Lord Zhao claimed, profoundly grounding.

"A flawless brew," Lin Yuan complimented, setting the cup down. He looked directly at the provincial lord. "Your hands are remarkably steady today, Lord Zhao. Yesterday, in the Exotic Realm, they trembled."

Lord Zhao’s hands paused over his own teacup. The atmosphere in the grand hall instantly shifted, growing heavy with the unspoken weight of the previous day’s revelations.

"I am a man at the Resolute Stage, Daoist Lin," Lord Zhao murmured, his eyes dropping to the surface of the tea. "I have fought wars. I have buried my own kin. I have watched the blood of my province paint the earth. I pride myself on a Dao Heart forged in iron, although false in nature and essence. But yesterday... when Lady Bai pulled the Ancestral Fish from the cosmic sea... when you deciphered the tri-colored orb..."

Lord Zhao swallowed hard, the muscles in his jaw clenching.

"The Dao of Three Rebirths," Lord Zhao whispered, the words carrying an agonizing sorrow that he could barely suppress. "To look upon the literal law that can lead to of the reincarnation cycle. To know that the power to reach into it and pull a soul back from the cycle of life and death was hovering mere inches from my grasp... and to know that I lacked the cultivation, the fortune, and the right to claim it. Yes, my hands trembled. My soul trembled. It was the cruelest, most beautiful phenomenon I have ever witnessed."

Lin Yuan watched the Provincial Lord. He saw the profound, unhealed trauma radiating from the man’s spiritual sea.

"You spoke of your brother when we were heading to the city," Lin Yuan stated softly. "You said he died."

"He was a better man than I," Lord Zhao said, his voice breaking slightly. He closed his eyes, leaning back in his heavy wooden chair. "He possessed the true talent of our lineage. I was merely the brute. But when the assassins of the rival provinces descended upon our sect, he burned his own Nascent Soul to forge a bloody path for my escape. He gave me his life so that I could one day claim the title of Provincial Lord. I wear this crown, Daoist Lin, but it is forged entirely from his ashes."

Lord Zhao opened his eyes, staring blankly at the high ceiling of the grand hall.

"For centuries, I have sat upon my throne, pretending that the authority of a province is enough to fill the void," Lord Zhao confessed. "But the truth is, every time I close my eyes, I see him falling. Every year, I go to the Exotic Realm. Every year, I cast my line into the void, praying to the Heavens, begging the Great Dao to grant me something. I knew the chances were less than a fraction of a faint percentile. But it was the only hope I had."

Lord Zhao looked back at Lin Yuan, his eyes shining with unshed, bitter tears. "And then, I watched you absorb it. I watched you merge it into your foundation. You possess the key to my true Dao heart, Lin Yuan. And I possess nothing but a cup of tea."

Lin Yuan sat perfectly still, his deep purple eyes unblinking.

"The Heavens are not a merchant, Lord Zhao," Lin Yuan spoke, his voice a low, rumbling vibration that seemed to physically alter the atmospheric pressure within the hall. "They do not trade in fairness. They do not care about your grief, nor do they care about your sacrifices. The Great Dao is a blind, deaf, and dumb river. It flows where it wills, and it drowns whoever stands in its path."
