Chapter 238 - 127: Great Demon Sealing Monarch, The Fool and the Cripple
Chapter 238: Chapter 127: Great Demon Sealing Monarch, The Fool and the Cripple
"Alright, Master Lin, focus on your recovery. You must be tired of the refectory’s food by now. I ordered you a meal from outside. Someone will deliver it shortly."
Fan Li rose and bowed, then turned and walked out of the courtyard.
"Thank you, Master Fan."
After he was gone, Lin Shu retracted his gaze, a strange look flickering in his eyes.
’To be honest, he’d felt from the very beginning that the Cloud Dragon Demon Monarch’s plan was unreliable.’
’The Immortal Families prized their reputation above all else. How could they possibly allow the Border Region to fall?’
’He wondered if that Group of Demons could withstand the Immortal Sect’s counterattack.’
’Judging by the Immortal Families’ preparations, it was going to be difficult for them.’
’Maybe I should have Elder Xu go back with a message. Tell Xie Yutang to collect the supplies and get that group of Little Demons out of there as soon as possible.’
Just as he was lost in thought, the sound of voices came from outside the courtyard.
"Hey! You fool!"
"Hey! You gimp!"
Hearing the familiar voice, Lin Shu raised an eyebrow and walked toward the courtyard entrance.
He saw two men grinning at each other.
Old Yang pulled a large bowl of food from a container and whispered, "I was delivering food today and had my wife make a portion specially for you. Quick, take it and eat."
"Our wife is the best," the scrawny man said with a goofy grin, taking the large bowl. He barely knew how to use chopsticks, messily shoveling the food into his mouth.
"She’s my damn wife, you fool!"
Old Yang shot him a resentful glare. The moment he looked up, he froze, his body starting to tremble.
The scrawny man didn’t turn around, but he noticed his friend’s strange reaction. He slowly stopped eating. A cold light glinted in the murky depths of his eyes, set in his ugly, scar-covered face.
"Master Lin!"
The food container in Old Yang’s hands fell to the ground with a THUD. He shouted, his voice filled with excitement, "What are you doing here?!"
"I was about to ask you the same."
Lin Shu strode toward them.
Just then, the scrawny man suddenly leaped back, holding his bowl in one hand while pinching his nose with the other.
"Fool, what’s gotten into you?" Old Yang asked in astonishment.
"Gimp, let’s just ignore him, okay?" The scrawny man’s muffled voice sounded both aggrieved and fearful. "I hate dogs, and he smells like one."
HISS! "Now you’re insulting him?" Old Yang smacked him crisply on the back of the head. "Address him as Master Lin!" he said angrily.
After getting slapped, the scrawny man turned to look at the youth. "Master Lin," he mumbled reluctantly.
"Master Lin, he’s just a fool. Probably got bitten by a dog as a kid, that’s why he spouts nonsense like this." Old Yang retracted his hand, satisfied.
...
Lin Shu stood frozen in place, his face impassive. He appeared calm, but beneath his sleeves, his fingers had clenched into tight fists.
The ease and comfort he had enjoyed over the past ten-odd days were completely shattered by those words.
Ever since he’d obtained the Tribulation Spiritual Root...
...it had been a very long time since anyone had mentioned him having any sort of smell.
’"Dog smell"... what did that mean?’
"I don’t believe I’ve ever kept a dog."
Lin Shu observed the man closely for a moment, but he couldn’t find any trace of Cultivation on him whatsoever.
At most, he might have learned a few Spirit Formulas, making him similar to one of the Border Guards.
He steadied himself.
’He had suspected before that, given the profound nature of the Soul-Splitting Thousand Threads Guide Divine Technique, he probably wasn’t the only one hosting a Wolf Soul. Could the man before him be in a similar situation?’
’Was it possible that an attraction between their Souls allowed the man to sense the Filthy Moon Wolf Lord’s presence without detecting an aura?’
"Hm?"
Hearing this, the fool’s brow furrowed. He took a deep sniff. "Alright, maybe I was mistaken."
He scratched his head, then sniffed at Old Yang before breaking into a wide grin. "Hey! You smell like a fox! I’m gonna go tell our wife."
"Bullshit! I was just delivering food to the brothels and came straight back! And she’s MY wife!"
Old Yang laughed with exasperation. If he could hold his temper back when he was single-handedly running the Magpie’s Nest, he could certainly handle this.
Lin Shu let out a breath, feeling a strange sense of helplessness.
’He couldn’t believe he was actually getting worked up over the words of a fool.’
’Even trying to analyze the hidden meaning in his every word.’
’But still, it was never wrong to be cautious.’
With a subtle flick of his finger, a soul-splitting wisp silently landed on the ugly, scrawny man.
Having done this, Lin Shu checked the eight hundred taels of Sin Coin he had left.
’I can’t hold anything back any longer. Today, I have to use this money to break through that major barrier that’s already on the verge of cracking.’
’Without the strength of a Golden Core cultivator, I’m completely vulnerable here in the unfamiliar Anren Prefecture. Like a bird startled by the twang of a bow, I have no sense of security at all.’
