Chapter 323: Chapter 323: The Illusionists’ Web

Grand Marshal Vane’s voice cut through the arena’s murmur.

"Match 14: Mirage Pavilion versus Iron Fist Sect. Fighters, take your positions."

The crowd leaned forward as two very different groups entered the arena.

The Iron Fist Sect was exactly what their name suggested.

Seven men built like boulders, their fists wrapped in steel bands that glowed with qi. They moved like a wall of muscle and bone, their footsteps cracking the stone floor.

The Mirage Pavilion was the opposite.

Seven cultivators in flowing silk robes stepped onto the arena floor. They carried no visible weapons. No armor. No battle scars.

They looked like poets who had wandered into a battlefield by mistake.

But Damon’s Incubus Celestial Eyes saw the truth.

Their qi was coiled tight around their cores, ready to spring. And their spiritual roots pulsed with a frequency that made the air around them shimmer.

’Illusion specialists,’ he thought. ’Pure mental arts.’

The Iron Fist captain laughed, his voice booming across the arena.

"Mirage Pavilion? You’re sending scholars to fight us? We’ll break you in two minutes."

The Mirage Pavilion captain smiled.

She was a woman with silver hair and eyes that seemed to shift color in the light.

"Is that so?"

Grand Marshal Vane raised his hand.

"Begin."

The Iron Fist Sect charged.

Their fists blazed with qi, steel bands glowing red as they closed the distance.

The Mirage Pavilion didn’t move.

Instead, they raised their instruments.

Flutes. Chimes. A small hand drum.

The first note rang out.

It was soft. Almost gentle.

But the Iron Fist disciples stopped mid-stride.

Their eyes went wide.

The lead fighter swung his fist at empty air.

He hit nothing.

But he kept swinging, his strikes becoming more frantic with each second.

"What’s happening?" Ariel whispered from beside Damon.

Damon’s eyes tracked the qi patterns.

"The Mirage Pavilion is projecting illusions through sound. Their instruments are conduits for their mental arts."

The Iron Fist disciples were now fighting shadows.

They punched at phantoms that weren’t there. They dodged attacks that never came.

And then it got worse.

One of the Iron Fist fighters turned to his teammate.

His eyes were blank.

He threw a punch.

The strike connected with his ally’s jaw, sending the man spinning across the arena floor.

"What the—" the Iron Fist captain shouted. "Snap out of it!"

But the damage was done.

The Mirage Pavilion kept playing.

The flutes wove melodies that twisted perception.

The chimes rang with frequencies that scrambled thought.

The drum beat a rhythm that felt like a heartbeat, but wrong, like a heart that was about to stop.

The Iron Fist disciples were tearing each other apart.

They punched. They kicked. They headbutted.

One man grabbed his own arm and tried to break it.

The crowd watched in horrified fascination.

Damon felt a presence behind him.

Warm breath brushed his ear.

"Child’s play," Mei purred.

She had appeared without a sound, her body leaning over his shoulder. Her deep purple hair brushed his cheek as she spoke.

"Compared to my arts, little dragon, this is nothing."

Damon didn’t turn.

"Is that so?"

Mei’s lips curved against his ear.

"Real charm takes your heart, not just your eyes. These illusionists are crude. They force their targets to see what isn’t there. But true charm? True charm makes you want to see it."

She traced a finger along his shoulder.

"It makes you beg for the deception."

Damon smirked.

"I know your charms all too well."

Mei’s breath caught.

Then she laughed, a low, throaty sound.

"Do you now?"

She pulled back slightly, but her hand remained on his shoulder.

"Perhaps I need to remind you."

Her tongue traced her lower lip.

"I’ll give you a private demonstration tonight, boy. A real one."

Damon’s smirk widened.

"I’ll hold you to that."

Mei’s eyes glittered with promise.

Then she stepped back, melting into the shadows behind the dugout.

Ariel glanced at Damon, one eyebrow raised.

"Did she just—"

"Yes."

"Are you going to—"

"Probably."

Ariel shook her head, but she was smiling.

"You’re impossible."

Damon turned back to the arena.

The Iron Fist Sect was finished.

Their last fighter stood alone in the center of the arena, his fists raised, his eyes wild.

He was surrounded by his unconscious teammates.

All of them had fallen to each other’s fists.

The Mirage Pavilion cultivators stood at the edges of the arena, their instruments still playing a soft, haunting melody.

The Iron Fist captain screamed, a guttural roar of rage that echoed through the coliseum.

He charged at the nearest Mirage Pavilion disciple, his fists raised, his eyes wild and unfocused.

But his gaze was fixed on something that wasn’t there—a phantom opponent conjured by the illusionists’ haunting melodies.

He ran straight past the smirking Mirage Pavilion disciple.

Straight toward the arena’s massive stone pillar.

His fist connected with the unyielding granite with a sickening crunch. The impact cracked the pillar, sending a spiderweb of fissures across its surface.

And the Iron Fist captain collapsed, his hand shattered, his body limp, his mind still trapped in the illusion’s embrace.

Grand Marshal Vane’s voice rang out across the silent coliseum.

"Mirage Pavilion wins. Iron Fist Sect is eliminated from the tournament."

The Mirage Pavilion captain lowered her bamboo flute from her lips.

She was a striking woman with flowing silver hair and almond-shaped eyes that held a perpetual gleam of amusement.

Her silk robes rippled as she bowed gracefully to the roaring crowd.

Then her eyes found Damon.

She smiled—a knowing, predatory curve of her lips.

Damon met her gaze without flinching.

His golden eyes studied her, cataloging her posture, her breathing, the subtle way her fingers still rested on her flute.

’She’s testing me, he thought. Seeing if I’m susceptible.’

He wasn’t.

But he was intrigued.

’Interesting,’ he thought.

’She knows I was watching.’

He filed that information away.

The Mirage Pavilion cultivators exited the arena, their silk robes flowing behind them.

The Iron Fist disciples were carried out on stretchers.

The crowd buzzed with discussion.

Damon leaned back in his seat.

’Mental arts are dangerous. But they have limits. The Mirage Pavilion’s illusions require sound. If you disrupt their instruments, you disrupt their techniques.’

He glanced at Mia.

She was already looking at him.

"Shadow techniques can block sound," she said softly.

Damon nodded.

"Good."

He turned to the arena.

The announcer’s voice echoed through the coliseum.

"Match 15 will begin in thirty minutes. The next pairing will be announced shortly."
