Chapter 127: The Sealed Door
"That’s wrong," she said.
Tobias’s voice came from another crystal. "Helpful. How wrong?"
"If the bedrock were simply leaking Essence, we’d see random pressure changes around the cracks. Watch this."
She replayed the pulses. First, the southern crystal flashed. Then the western one. Finally, the northern one.
She ran the recording again, slowing it down.
The same order.
"It’s traveling upward," Serah said. "And there’s a repeating gap between each burst."
"How far down?" Thorn asked.
Serah moved the marker under the fourteenth level, where the map turned black.
LEVEL FIFTEEN: IMPASSABLE.
Nobody spoke for a moment.
"That’s pre-Cataclysm territory," Tobias said at last.
"The signal looks like the encoded patterns we recovered from the ancient research crystal," Serah replied. "Not identical, but close enough that I want better measurements. Something is sending this."
Back in the Undercity workshop, Alvian was checking an Essence regulator when a low vibration passed through his arm.
He put the tool down.
The regulator had stopped humming, but the feeling continued inside his bones.
DUMM.
His Clearwater energy stirred without him calling on it.
’What the hell was that?’
He tried to settle the energy. It obeyed for a second, then shifted again, keeping time with something he couldn’t hear.

Alvian read the last two lines twice.
From the crystal on his workbench, Serah’s voice called, "Alvian? You there? We found something below the fourteenth."
He lowered his hands under the workbench, hiding the faint silver movement along his fingertips.
"I’m here. What did you find?"
"I want you to see the readings."
"Send them over."
He didn’t mention what his Talent had just done.
On the other end, Serah turned up the scanner’s sensitivity. A fourth pulse struck the three survey records, stronger than the last.
Bex’s distant voice broke through the connection.
"Guildmaster, the lower lift just sent another warning. The crawlers are heading toward the lights again."

Tobias Finch had just finished sending two patrols away from the lower lifts when the warning crystal went red again.
BZZZT!
A tired voice came through. "Another crawler pack. They’re following the work lamps up the west stairs."
"Then turn the damn lamps off," Tobias snapped.
"We tried. One of them ate the switchboard."
He closed his eyes.
’I miss when the worst thing down there was a rat chewing through somebody’s boot.’
"Block the stairwell and get everyone out. No hero work."
He set the crystal down, pulled a flat metal box from beneath his cot, and sent Hendricks to fetch the others.
Twenty minutes later, Serah entered Tobias’s hut carrying three survey slates. Alvian came behind her, still wearing a workshop apron. Hendricks shut the door and checked the communication crystal on the table.
Elara Thorn’s face appeared above it.
"Finch, if this is about patrol wages, I’m leaving," she said.
"It isn’t. Though I have opinions about those too."
"Naturally."
Serah laid out her readings. "The latest pulse was stronger. We stopped all civilian traffic below level twelve, but the signal’s reaching the upper shafts now."
Hendricks pulled out his ledger. "That shuts down three freight routes. Give it another day and the traders will start selling empty sacks as rare underground air."
"Better than selling body bags," Thorn replied.
Tobias opened his metal box.
Inside lay a folded map, a broken brass badge, and a survey plate scratched so deeply that half its markings had faded.
Alvian recognized the old Consortium badge. "You kept this?"
"I kept the things nobody bothered to steal." Tobias spread the map across the table. "Look here. Fourteenth level. The last place my old team surveyed."
Serah leaned closer. "Your team reached this far? The Guild maps end two passages earlier."
"The Guild maps are missing a lot of things. Some by accident. Some because people with expensive boots told the clerks to lose a page."
He marked a narrow shaft near the bottom of the drawing.
"We found a walkway leading under the fourteenth. Across the shaft was a door. Ten meters high, maybe five wide. Smooth crystal, blue writing, not a crack anywhere."
"You entered the fifteenth?" Alvian asked.
"No. We tried to get across. The barrier shredded our probes before they got close. One came back as powder."
Serah lifted the scratched plate. "What’s this reading?"
"The lock. Or what was left of the probe’s record."
She connected her scanner. A broken image flickered above the table: a pale wall, a ring of dark energy, and a steel tool falling apart inside the ring.
CRK!
The image cut off.
"That’s dissolution," Serah said. "Not ordinary corrosion. It took the metal apart without leaving residue."
"That’s what we thought," Tobias answered. "Our strongest delver tried breaking the barrier. Didn’t scratch it. Another tried freezing it. His glove disappeared."
Alvian watched the ring of energy replay.
’A barrier made from the same kind of force I use.’
"So what opens it?" Hendricks asked.
Tobias looked at Alvian. "Something that can dissolve the barrier itself. We didn’t have anyone like that."
"And you only remembered this now?" Serah asked.
"I remembered it every time the old arm hurt." He tapped his mechanical wrist. "I just never had a reason to believe the thing was waking up."
He took out the brass badge. One corner had melted into a lump.
"Two weeks after that survey, our team got sent to a Rift that collapsed. I lost my arm. The others didn’t come back."
The room went quiet.
Tobias turned the badge over. "I’d already reported a Guild official selling Rift coordinates. I knew the assignment stank. Thought they wanted me quiet about the report. Now I wonder if someone also wanted us to stop talking about that door."
Thorn’s image leaned forward. "I checked the restricted Consortium records after Serah sent her pulse data. There’s an older survey, from before the Cataclysm."
Another image joined the table: a drawing of clean corridors surrounding a large chamber. The title had been translated into modern script.
KNOWLEDGE VAULT. DEEP WARRENS ARCHIVE.
Hendricks whistled. "That’s a very fancy name for something under a sewer."
"Golden Age records," Thorn said. "No list of contents, no confirmed access route. But the position matches Finch’s door."
Serah compared the new drawing with her pulse map. The brightest mark sat directly under the chamber.
"If the source is inside, it’s sending through the lock," she said. "That would explain why the creatures react farther up."
"Or something’s trying to get out," Hendricks said.
"Thank you," Tobias replied. "I was enjoying my sleep before you said that."
A low vibration ran through the table.
DUMM.
Serah’s scanner flashed. Alvian quietly curled his fingers beneath his apron as Clearwater energy stirred along his wrist.

’Wasn’t planning to.’
Serah caught him looking down. "Alvian?"
"The same pattern as the ancient records," he said. "But we still need to see the lock."
"That’s what I was going to propose," Tobias said. He planted his mechanical hand on the map. "An expedition. I lead us to the shaft. Serah reads the circuitry. Alvian handles the barrier."
"And I handle the funerals?" Hendricks asked.
"You handle supplies and communication. Try not to sound disappointed."
Thorn shook her head. "Nobody reaches the fifteenth with three people and a notebook. Rank Five guardians are possible. The pressure changes can throw a delver off their feet, and survey tools break down after minutes in the exposed air."
Serah looked at her own scanner. "Mine wouldn’t last one corridor. Neither would my lungs."
"So we don’t go without protection," Alvian said.
"Buying A-Rank armor for everyone?" Hendricks asked. "I’ll just sell my entire network, then."
"No. I’ll make it."
Alvian pulled a damaged regulator from his apron pocket and put it on the map. A thin layer of Clearwater surrounded it. The broken shell softened, then rebuilt itself around a living crystal core.
