Chapter 33: [33]: The First Deep Restructuring, Pathway Fire
The Academy’s rewards terminal was a smooth pillar of black metal standing in the main lobby of the admin wing. Alvian put his stipend card into the reader. The floating screen turned on.
[Student: Alvian Vance]
[Rank: E-Rank Clearwater]
[Tournament Result: First Place]
[Monthly Stipend: 200 Credits]
[Priority Resource Access: Granted]
[Class A Housing Eligibility: Granted]
He accepted the terms with a tap. Two hundred credits a month. Enough for Martha’s medicine, Leo’s food, fixing gear, and extra savings. For the first time since leaving the Undercity with only twelve credits, he was not close to starving.
The credits reached his Academy account immediately. Fifty for medicine. Thirty for food. Twenty for gear. One hundred for self-improvement.
How should he spend it? On himself. On his Essence. On the deep pathway changes that Serah suggested.
He checked the time. 0830. Thirteen hours until his first circuitry session at 2100. Thirteen hours to prepare, rest, and plan.
He spent the morning in the Warrens.
Not the deep areas, but the middle levels where Rank 2 Sludge Crawlers spawned regularly. He needed EXP to upgrade his Essence, and he needed KP for his long-term goal. Every kill with a roll under 5x gave him Karma Points. Every Karma Point moved him closer to buying probability items in the VIP Shop.
His hunting was steady and neat.
A Crawler appeared. Clearwater Palm weakened its shell. A short-sword strike went through its eye. Kill completed. The reward wheel spun.
[DING!]
[Kill: Sludge Crawler (Rank 2). Base EXP: 25.]

[Kill: Sludge Crawler (Rank 2). Base EXP: 25.]
[Roll: 2x. EXP: 50. KP +1.]
Low rolls. Bad luck for most people, but every roll under 5x added to his KP total. Each point built a shield against future dangers.
Twelve kills over three hours. Eight rolls below 5x. KP went from 8 to 16. Total EXP gained: around 1,400. Not enough for a full stat point, but he saved it.
At noon, he went back to the surface. He ate and checked on Martha through the message crystal Serah gave him. Tobias said she was sleeping calmly, and the crystal spots on her fingers remained soft from the VIT potion.
At 2100, Alvian entered Serah’s East Wing laboratory.
The lab looked different now. Three days ago, it was messy with circuitry parts and half-eaten food. Now, it was clean and organized. Tools hung on magnetic strips. Resonance crystals glowed in neat patterns on a metal table that was clear of everything except a thin pad. Magitech wires were coiled neatly, each labeled with Essence flow numbers.
Serah stood by the table. Fresh circuitry wire pulsed with blue light around her forearms. She had not slept, showing dark circles under her eyes.
"Lie down," she said without greeting him. "Shirt off."
Months of Warren diving and System growth had changed his body. STR 40 and VIT 55 built dense, functional muscle across his frame not fake Academy bulk, but the lean build of a survivor. Scars marked his chest. A magma burn on his shoulder, a thin line from a Sludge Beetle, and fresh Bloodhound bruises across his ribs.
Serah’s hands stopped.
She held the crystal scalpel, but her eyes were on him: his scars, his muscle, and how thin he used to be when they first met. Her face flushed pink. She turned away quickly, pretending to adjust resonance crystals.
"Lie down," she said, her voice cracking. "Face up."
Alvian lay flat on the cold metal table. Serah moved to his side and leaned over to check the pathway map. Her forearm touched his shoulder.
The circuitry wire on her arm was warm, conducting hot Essence. The contact sent a pulse through his skin.
Serah froze.
Her arm stayed against his shoulder as the wire pulsed blue. She was close enough for him to smell her soap and clean sweat. Her eyes dropped to his collarbone, tracing the magma burn.
Then she caught herself.
"This will hurt," Her voice was controlled. Almost. She picked up a thin crystal tool that looked like a small blade glowing with Essence liquid. "The main Clearwater pathway runs from your Talent core through your right arm into your palm. I need to make it forty percent wider. That means stretching your Essence pathway tissue. Imagine stretching a rubber band, except the band is made of nerves connected to your soul."
"Sounds great," Alvian said.
Serah placed the crystal blade against his right forearm. Her fingers touched his skin as she placed the instrument. Professional. Precise. But her fingertips stayed a moment longer than needed.
Then she activated it.
The pain hit him instantly.
It was not a sharp burn, but a deep pressure inside his arm. It felt like liquid fire filling his arm from the inside. The Essence pathway stretched, making every nerve along the channel scream at once.
Alvian’s back arched off the table. He bit down so hard he tasted blood. His hands grabbed the edges of the mat with white knuckles.
[DING!]
[External Essence manipulation detected.]
[Source: Essence Circuitry (Allied).]
[Target: Primary Clearwater Channel.]
[Procedure: Pathway Widening.]
[Pain level: Severe.]
[The System suggests screaming. It helps.]
He did not scream. He locked his jaw and breathed in short, quick gasps. The cold crystal blade moved slowly up his forearm along his Talent pathway. Everywhere it touched, the pathway stretched. Everywhere it stretched, the internal fire grew stronger.
"Your pathway is narrower than expected," Serah said, focusing hard on her work. Her circuitry pad showed real-time numbers of his internal Essence flow. "Your original Awakening energy formed poorly. Your Clearwater pathway is forty percent smaller than a normal E-Rank. No wonder your power output was so low."
’Thanks for telling me now,’ Alvian thought through the pain.
The blade reached his elbow, where the pathway split toward his shoulder and palm. Serah paused to adjust the angle.
"This is the dangerous spot," she said. "If I widen the wrong side, energy will flow backward into your Talent core. That would be bad."
"How bad?"
"Your Talent core would break. You would lose Clearwater forever, and maybe lose the ability to use Talents entirely." She moved the blade by a tiny distance. "Don’t move."
Alvian stayed still and stopped breathing. The fire in his arm turned into a burning spike running from his wrist to his shoulder, throbbing with his heartbeat. Sweat poured down his face.
Serah activated the blade at the split.
The pain doubled.
Alvian’s vision went dark at the edges. His HP dropped by fifteen points in one second.
[DING!]
[HP -15! Pathway tissue stress detected.]
[HP: 55 → 40.]
[VIT 55 compensating. Regeneration accelerated.]
