Chapter 53: The Aura Pillar, Every Eye Turns
The light blasted up through the roof, through every city level, through the protective sky shields, and high into the air.
People could see the giant beam from fifty kilometers away. It punched a huge hole in the clouds, letting strange stars shine through during the day.
Every powerhouse in Vaeloria felt it.
In the Guildhall, three kilometers north, Commander Valerius dropped his coffee. The ceramic mug shattered on the stone floor. His Kinetic Tyrant Talent registered the energy spike as a Rank 5 dimensional event.
Equivalent to a Calamity Rift opening.
His face went pale. He had seen exactly one Rank 5 event in his thirty-year career. The kind of thing that killed cities.
"Get me the Academy on the line," he barked at his aide. "Now. Not later. Now."
In the Royal Palace, four kilometers east, King Alistair Valdus was pulled from a council meeting by his Royal Guard. The guards did not explain. They simply grabbed the King by both arms and moved him toward the reinforced bunker beneath the throne room.
A pale young officer reported a "localized dimensional fracture" in the Upper Ward.
"Where is it coming from?" the King demanded.
"Unknown, Your Majesty. The energy signature is unlike anything in our databases."
King Alistair, sixty years old and Level 72, felt something he had not felt in decades. Fear. Not of the energy itself, but of the unknown source. Rank 5 events had causes. This one had appeared from nowhere.
In the Aegis Institute’s floating campus, high above the capital, every instructor simultaneously turned toward the Undercity district. The campus’s dimensional sensors, designed to detect Rift formations across the continent, were screaming. Every alarm on every floor went off at the same time.
Students stumbled in the hallways, clutching their heads as the dimensional pressure wave passed through them.
And on a balcony overlooking the Upper Ward, a man in grey robes stood with a pocket watch in his hand.
Magistrate Sully.
The Observer checked his watch. The second hand had stopped moving. Time itself had paused in a three-meter radius around him.
He stopped time for three full seconds just to process the readings.
His face showed real surprise. It was not fear or panic, but the shock of a man who had just proven a bad theory was right.
"Foolish boy. The World Will will be knocking within the week."
He snapped the watch closed. Time resumed. The second hand ticked forward, catching up on the three seconds it had missed.
Sully turned and walked back into the shadows of his balcony. He had reports to write. The Observers would need to convene.
In the alley, the Aura’s Explosion shockwave flattened everything nearby.
The two buildings closest to Alvian collapsed, their walls crumbling inward as dust and debris blew outward.
Serah was battered but alive. She had dived behind the metal bin just in time. The force slammed into the dumpster, pushing it back three meters with a harsh metal screech. She stayed down, covering her head as stone fragments rained over her back.
Alvian used his own body to shield Tobias. He had moved instantly, curling over the old man to take the full force across his back. His high VIT stat absorbed the blast without a flinch. The heavy impact that collapsed buildings felt like nothing more than a soft breeze to him.
After thirty seconds, the golden pillar faded. The strange light vanished, and the clouds began to close over the sky like a healing wound. Screams, sirens, and rushing footsteps echoed in the distance.
The extra energy cleared out, but the air in the alley remained thin and wavy. Reality itself was left damaged and fragile.
[Dimensional stability: WORSENING.]
[The Aura Explosion has damaged the dimensional bedrock.]
[Continued stress may result in Rift formation.]
[Recommendation: DO NOT USE S-RANK SKILLS IN THIS AREA.]
Alvian stood. His new body moved with an ease that was almost frightening. STR 110 made the motion effortless. AGI 102 made it fast. VIT 280 made it completely stable.
He flexed his hands. The Clearwater Coating, now integrated into his bone structure, hummed through his skeleton. The passive dissolution field around his body was stronger than before. The stone beneath his feet was developing hairline cracks just from his standing on it.
The power was unlike anything he had felt. At Level 32, he had been powerful but still mortal. A skilled fighter with a cheat.
At Level 50, with stats in the hundreds and an S-Rank Domain that he could now sustain for over thirty seconds, he was something else entirely.
A walking strategic asset.
A one-man army whose S-Rank Domain could dissolve city blocks and whose physical stats rivaled veterans twice his level.
Serah climbed out from behind the dumpster. The boy she had modified in her lab was gone.
He stood taller now, his skin showing a faint glow and his eyes holding a bright shimmer.
"Alvian?" she said. Her voice was small.
He looked at her. Recognition. Warmth. The same eyes, despite the changes. "I’m here."
"What... what are you?"
The question slipped out, just as it had in her lab weeks ago. Each time she asked, the answer grew more disturbing. He was no longer an E-Rank. He was something the world had no name for.
Alvian did not answer. He lifted Tobias over his shoulder with one arm. His STR 110 made the old veteran feel weightless. He held out his free hand to Serah.
She took it. Her fingers were cold. His were warm, heated by the Clearwater resonance in his bones.
"Can you walk?" he asked.
"Yes."
"Good. We need to get home."
He walked toward the Undercity. His AGI 102 allowed him to move faster than a sprint, forcing Serah to jog to keep up. Tobias lay limp over his shoulder, breathing steadily.
The street was empty. People had fled when the light erupted from the Magnus Estate.
Alarms screamed across the Upper Ward as guards rushed into the district. Nobody paid attention to a boy in a burned shirt carrying an old man and holding a girl’s hand.
