Infinite Disasters: I Hoarded My Way to Godhood
Chapter 324: Foresight Talent, the Extreme Cold Is About to Pass
Chapter 324: Chapter 324: Foresight Talent, the Extreme Cold Is About to Pass
Seraphina Sullivan’s treatment had only delayed the process of Leo Ross’s death.
It couldn’t cure this terminal illness that stemmed from life itself.
This left Seraphina Sullivan with a profound sense of powerlessness.
Seraphina Sullivan withdrew her hand, and the blossoms of her [Flower Therapy] slowly dissipated.
Watching the family of five before her, their expressions shifting from despair to hope and now wavering on the edge of it once more, Seraphina recognized a clear boundary to her Ability for the first time.
In this apocalypse, she could stitch up torn wounds, perform Purification on toxins, counteract radiation, and even exert a degree of Mind Control.
But it seemed she couldn’t yet touch the root cause of a true illness like this.
Still, Seraphina Sullivan spoke.
"My treatment has only made him feel a bit more comfortable. It can’t cure his illness."
Seraphina Sullivan’s words were like a basin of ice water.
The joyful atmosphere froze in an instant, replaced by a heavy, deathly silence.
Michelle Morgan covered her mouth as tears rolled down her face in silence.
The light in the eyes of the twin young men, River Ross and Hayden Ross, dimmed, and they clenched their fists until their knuckles turned white.
Mrs. Morgan swayed, seeming to age several years in an instant.
"COUGH... Miss Sullivan is right..." Lying in bed, Leo Ross was ironically the calmest of them all. He spoke weakly, breaking the suffocating silence.
"This illness of mine... Before the apocalypse, the doctors said... I didn’t have much time left. It’s me... I’m the one who’s been dragging this family down.
"I wanted to give up a long time ago, but they... they just wouldn’t let me."
His gaze swept over his mother, wife, and sons, filled with guilt and reluctance to leave them.
"Don’t say that, Leo!"
"Dad!"
"Son!"
His family immediately choked back sobs as they refuted him.
Leo Ross managed a faint smile and looked at Seraphina Sullivan. "Still, thank you, Miss Sullivan. I’m sorry to have troubled you and made you come all this way for nothing. I do feel... a lot more comfortable."
"Don’t mention it," Seraphina Sullivan said, shaking her head, her tone frank.
"I also wanted to see the limits of my own Ability. At least for now, it seems my method only treats the symptoms of this kind of deep-rooted cancer, not the cause."
Just then, the curtain flap of the shack was lifted again, and a tall figure stooped to enter.
It was Justin Brooks.
He was clearly taken aback to see Seraphina Sullivan there.
"Comrade Sullivan? What are you doing here?"
Justin Brooks was very surprised.
Seraphina Sullivan was also surprised, not expecting to run into Justin Brooks at Leo Ross’s home.
’Suddenly, Seraphina Sullivan remembered that Leo Ross had the [Shooting] Professional Skill. Could he have been a soldier?’
Justin Brooks then noticed Leo Ross in bed and the sorrowful atmosphere around him.
Connecting that with Seraphina Sullivan’s healing Ability, he immediately understood most of the situation.
He looked at Seraphina Sullivan with a glimmer of hope in his eyes. "Comrade Sullivan, your healing Ability... can it cure Ross?"
Seraphina Sullivan slowly shook her head again, giving the same answer.
"For now, my Ability can only alleviate his pain and replenish some of his Life Force, but it can’t remove the root of the illness."
Obvious disappointment flashed across Justin Brooks’s face, but he quickly composed himself.
Meanwhile, upon seeing Justin Brooks, Leo Ross seemed to rally a bit. He tried to sit up but was held down by his wife.
"Justin Brooks? You punk... what brings you here today?"
Though his voice was weak, it carried a hint of familiar complaint.
Seeing this, Seraphina Sullivan knew there was nothing more for her to do here for the time being.
It wasn’t her place to get too involved in their family matters or their reunion.
She walked over to Mrs. Morgan and gently pressed the old cloth bundle back into the elderly woman’s hands.
"Ma’am, please take this back. I didn’t cure Mr. Ross’s illness, so I can’t accept this."
But Mrs. Morgan recoiled as if burned, waving her hands frantically as tears welled up again. "No! No! Doctor Sullivan, you must take it! Even if you didn’t cure him, my son... since he fell ill, his complexion has never been this good, and he’s never said he felt so comfortable! That’s enough! That’s more than enough!"
She gripped Seraphina Sullivan’s hand tightly, her wrinkled palm rough but surprisingly strong. "You don’t know, watching him in so much pain he can’t sleep all night, it feels like a knife twisting in my heart... If I could, I’d rather it was me, this old woman, who got sick! My son, he...!"
The old woman’s cries were filled with a mother’s love, so simple yet so heart-wrenching, that Seraphina Sullivan’s throat tightened. For a moment, she didn’t know how to comfort her.
’Accepting the gift would weigh on my conscience, but refusing it outright would seem cold and unfeeling.’
"Mom, don’t be like this..." Leo Ross pleaded, a look of embarrassment on his face. "You’re... you’re putting Miss Sullivan in a difficult position."
Justin Brooks also stepped forward and gently persuaded her, "Miss Morgan, Comrade Sullivan has her principles. It’s a good thing that Ross is feeling better now. You should hold onto this for now. You never know when it might be useful later."
He glanced at Seraphina Sullivan with an understanding look.
Seraphina Sullivan took the opportunity to gently withdraw her hand and nodded to Mrs. Morgan and Leo Ross’s family.
"I won’t accept the payment. However, if Mr. Ross feels unwell again later, or if you find any other potentially useful methods, you can come find me. If there’s anything I can do to help, I’ll do my best."
She made no unrealistic promises, but her words were enough to earn the boundless gratitude of the family in their predicament.
At the very least, they knew there was still a path they could take to possibly alleviate his suffering.
Leaving the oppressive and sorrowful shack and breathing in the cold outside air again, Seraphina Sullivan’s heart felt heavy.
Increased strength didn’t mean one could solve every problem. The fragility and complexity of life seemed all the more stark and cruel against the backdrop of the apocalypse.
Seraphina Sullivan was about to leave when, unexpectedly, Justin Brooks followed her out.
"Mr. Brooks, what is it...?" Seraphina Sullivan asked, a little puzzled.
Justin Brooks sighed and explained, "Leo Ross was my old commanding officer in the army. He’s an upright man with great ability. He had to retire early after being diagnosed with cancer. He took good care of me back then, so I come by to see him and bring some supplies whenever I have time."
He didn’t elaborate on the Rhodes Family’s situation, his mood clearly heavy as well.
But then, he changed the subject, a rare look of relief appearing on his face.
"By the way, Comrade Sullivan, I have some good news for you. You probably haven’t heard it yet."
"What good news?" Seraphina Sullivan asked.
The gloom on Justin Brooks’s face seemed to lift slightly at this news.
"You might not know this yet, but over at the Central Base, they recently discovered a Player with an extremely special Talent. Her Ability is true ’Premonition’—not a vague feeling, but the ability to see certain important fragments of the future with relative clarity!"
He lowered his voice and continued, "This Player recently made a major prediction: the extreme cold is about to end, and global temperatures will gradually warm up in the near future! This sudden giant hailstorm is likely the final, desperate backlash of the extreme cold disaster before it completely recedes!"
"Oh? Really?"
Hearing this news, Seraphina Sullivan’s spirits were indeed lifted.
