INFINITE MEMORIES : MY F-RANK SKILL IS ACTUALLY THE STRONGEST
Chapter 152: SHADOWS OVER CAPITAL
<Chapter 152: Shadows Over the Capital>
The salt spray of the Grand Gulf broke against the jagged basalt cliffs of the southern shoreline, where the cold, industrial smog of the mainland met the open sea.
Hovering just beneath the waterline in a pocket of warped spatial silence, the kilometer-long hull of the Aethelgard remained completely invisible to modern radar arrays. High above on the misty cliffside road, the distant sirens of Sentinel City’s defense patrols wailed in a constant, low drone. The sky over the capital was choked with the suffocating, gray haze of over-refined mana engines and the flickering neon advertisements of the twelve major hunter syndicates.
Standing on the damp grass at the edge of the coastal bluff, having stepped off the dreadnought’s silent transit ring, was Noah Kurtz.
His hands were buried comfortably inside the deep pockets of his dark woolen coat. His posture was settled into that familiar, unhurried slouch, ash-black hair shifting in the chill onshore wind. His steel-gray eyes scanned the distant spires of the city center with cool, clinical detachment. Pinned over his left chest lapel, the dark ironwood leaf brooch hummed with a quiet, steady golden pulse, easily filtering the smog and synthetic mana pollution out of the air. Beneath his worn sleeves, his black ironwood forearm guards lay quiet, their internal dampening circuits resting in zero-waste equilibrium.
Circulate.
Inside his core, Noah’s 6.50% Memory Cabinet Synchronization moved with the calm, immovable depth of a frozen ocean. The sovereign authority of the five recovered keys—the Wood, the Silver, the Coral, the Pearl, and the Meridian Compass—sat in seamless alignment within his spiritual architecture. To the automated scanner towers humming along the highway two miles away, his mana signature registered as nothing more than a faint, flickering ember: an unranked F-rank porter carrying ordinary scrap.
Walking soundlessly beside him, her slender left hand linked naturally within his right palm, was Rin Asakura.
Rin wore her lavender kimono beneath her dark navy travel cloak, the fabric rustling gently against the tall coastal reeds. Her white woolen shawl rested over her shoulders, and her simple wooden practice sword swayed peacefully at her left hip.
Her crystalline violet eyes looked toward the towering, neon-lit silhouette of the capital, open, unsealed, and completely serene.
Without a blindfold, and with the full depth of Asura’s Touch interwoven with her unsealed void-sight, Rin perceived the feverish, chaotic heartbeat of the city. She mapped the bloated mana conduits feeding the corporate towers, the rigid defensive wards surrounding the Archive Church’s central district, and the hundreds of terrified patrol squads scanning the horizon for a phantom enemy.
Slowly, Rin leaned her shoulder gently against Noah’s arm, her delicate fingers tightening their warm, devoted grip within his palm.
"The air here smells of rust and fear, Noah..." Rin whispered softly, her melodic, formal cadence carrying an intimate sweetness that touched his ear. "In the northern rifts and the sunken cradle, the earth was silent and pure. But this city feels like a dying beast thrashing in a net of its own making. They have filled the sky with iron, yet every heartbeat within those walls is trembling."
Noah turned his head, his steel-gray gaze softening with genuine, unshakeable tenderness as he looked down into her clear violet eyes. He gently squeezed her fingers, his thumb caressing the soft curve of her knuckles with quiet warmth.
"They’re trembling because the ledger is coming due, Rin," Noah spoke softly, his flat, rasping whisper carrying the weight of ancient eons. "For five hundred years, the Church and the syndicates told the public that the rifts were an inevitable curse that only their paid hunters could contain. Now that the northern mana wells have stopped feeding their reactors, the illusion is cracking. When a bully realizes his stick is hollow, he panics."
Rin stepped closer into his space, resting her cheek gently against the rough wool of his sleeve while holding their linked hands against her heart.
Thump. Thump. Thump.
"And we are here to break the stick, Noah," Rin murmured softly, her breath warm against his coat, her eyes shining with quiet, unwavering devotion.
Behind them in the brush, the heavy, rhythmic crunch-slap of rubber soles broke the stillness of the bluff.
Jiho Park trudged forward, dragging his faded, scuffed slide sandals lazily through the wet coastal grass. The massive S-Rank Juggernaut wore his baggy gray sweatpants and an oversized yellow cotton tank top, completely ignoring the brisk wind. Balanced over his broad right shoulder was his indestructible canvas duffel bag, packed tight with supplies and heavy ore. In his left hand, he held a massive roasted turkey leg glazed with spiced honey, tearing off a thick chunk of meat with a slow, contented crunch.
"Man," Jiho mumbled around a mouthful of poultry, his droopy eyes half-shut as he squinted at the city skyline. "Master, that city looks even louder than when we left. Look at all those flying patrol vans flashing their red lights. Are they throwing a parade for us? My slide sandals are getting muddy, and I really hope the noodle shops in District 4 haven’t raised their prices while we were underwater."
"No parades, Jiho," Noah replied smoothly, a dry, subtle smirk touching the corner of his lips. "And District 4 is on lockdown. You’ll have to settle for the rations in your bag for now."
"Tragic," Jiho sighed sleepily, shaking his head with profound sorrow as he took another massive bite of turkey. "A world without midnight pork buns is a world out of balance. Master, whenever you want me to flatten a checkpoint so we can get to a kitchen, just say the word."
Strolling up the slope to Noah’s left, Chloe Harrington caught her silver coin with an effortless, rhythmic snap.
Clink.
She wore her dark leather duster unbuttoned over a light linen shirt, her dead platinum revolvers resting quietly in their holsters. Her sharp amber eyes sparkled with brilliant golden probability lines as she surveyed the city’s outer defense perimeter.
"Probability vectors for an unalerted infiltration: ninety-six point seven percent, Boss," Chloe reported with a sharp, rebellious smirk. "The International Hunter Association has concentrated ninety percent of their high-rank personnel around Sector 0 and the Church’s High Sanctum. The lower industrial sectors are basically unmanned. The private security corps are so busy guarding the executive penthouses that the back alleys are wide open."
"Look at the regional news broadcast, Boss!" Alistair Vance blurted out, breathlessly jogging up the bluff while adjusting his brass-rimmed walking spectacles.
Alistair carried his portable espresso rig strapped securely to his chest, clutching a steaming ceramic mug of dark roast in one hand and his glowing holographic datapad in the other. He tapped the glass screen, projecting a live news feed into the air between them.
On the projection, the sleek, polished broadcast studio of the Central Hunter Network displayed flashing crimson emergency banners:
GLOBAL MANA INSTABILITY REACHES CRITICAL THRESHOLD: ARCHIVE CHURCH DECLARES SECTOR-WIDE INQUEST. SS-RANK STRIKE CORPS DEPLOYED TO SECURE CENTRAL CAPITAL.
Below the headlines, a live camera feed showed the grand plaza outside the Hunter Association headquarters. Dozens of heavily armored tactical units were escorting elite guild executives through a sea of shouting reporters. Among them, walking with rigid, haughty grace in pristine silver armor, was Evelyn Vance, surrounded by a phalanx of private guards from the Vance Conglomerate.
"The corporate board is in total disarray!" Alistair laughed with manic academic glee, taking a quick sip of coffee. "My dearest cousin Evelyn is currently leading the Association’s emergency logistics committee. She just announced that the northern anomalies were caused by an ’unregistered terrorist syndicate.’ They’re preparing to raid every unranked logistics hub in the city to find scapegoats!"
"Let them search the hubs," Noah murmured flatly, his steel-gray eyes fixed on the distant silhouette of the High Sanctum. "The Meridian Compass already gave us the map. The anchor isn’t in an alley or a warehouse. It’s buried beneath the High Pontiff’s altar."
Noah pulled his left hand from his coat pocket, feeling the cold salt air bite gently against his skin before turning back toward the team.
"Chloe, tap into the city’s transit grid and secure a safehouse in District 7," Noah commanded calmly, his flat, rasping whisper carrying the quiet, immovable weight of the Ashen Sovereign. "Alistair, keep monitoring the Church’s encrypted frequencies. Jiho, finish your turkey leg and stay close."
"Understood, Master," Jiho mumbled happily, polishing off the bone in two bites.
Beside Noah, Rin Asakura stepped close into his chest, her pale hand holding his with eternal, unbreakable strength. Her crystalline violet eyes shone with absolute devotion as she looked up into his face.
"We take the next step together, Noah..." Rin murmured softly, her breath warm against his lapel.
Noah looked down at her, wrapping his arm gently around her waist with quiet warmth.
"Together, Rin," Noah Kurtz said softly. "Let’s walk into the city."
