Rechelle came back through the crowd with a smile that said she had already taken the morning back.

Drivers watched her. Girls watched her. Old names on the lot tracked her with the usual mix of respect and irritation. She did not slow down for any of it. She walked straight to Lucas with the keys tight in her hand and that small sharp smile already in place.

She stopped in front of him and pressed them into his palm.

"There. You’re in."

Lucas closed his fingers around the metal. It was still warm from her hand. "Which one?"

She tipped her chin toward the far edge. "Black Silvia. Hector’s. Just be careful with it. And with yourself."

Behind her, Hector already looked like he regretted the whole thing.

He had stayed by the car after the deal, but the confidence had gone out of his shoulders. The hood was still open. For a second he stood there with both hands on the edge, staring into the engine bay like the machine might talk him out of it. Then he shut it harder than he needed to. The sound carried. A few people glanced over. He wiped his palms on his trousers, stepped aside, and left the driver’s door clear with the face of a man who had handed over something he loved and already hated himself for it.

Lucas walked over without rushing and without performing for the eyes that followed him.

Hector stood close to the front wing, jaw locked, arms folded tight. Lucas gave him a short nod. Nothing more. The stress was plain on Hector’s face, every bad picture of a stranger folding his car into the barrier running behind his eyes, and Lucas did not care enough to soften it. The deal was done. The keys were in his hand. That was enough.

He opened the door and dropped into the seat.

The Silvia wrapped around him in black modified aggression. No stock toy. The bucket seat held him low and tight. The cabin smelled of warm rubber, oil, and cleaned metal. When he glanced back he saw the hardware packed behind the seats, lines run clean, the whole rear built to hurt something on a straight. On the console a nitrous button sat in plain view, small and final. Everything in the car looked sporty and mean at the same time. Not flashy. Built for speed.

Lucas set his hands on the wheel, found the pedals, and put it in gear.

He fed the throttle gently and let it roll. The response came immediate and clean. No confusion in the clutch. No awkward search for the car’s mood. From a few steps away Hector’s face cracked with surprise before he could hide it. The fashion boy had not stalled it. Had not hunted for second. Had not sat there guessing. He had simply moved the car like he had done it before.

"Huh," Hector muttered.

Lucas did not hear him.

He eased the Silvia across the lot toward the rough start line, engine controlled under the hood, body low over the scarred asphalt. On the other side Buster’s Mark II was already angled into place, waiting, loud even at idle. The crowd shifted with Lucas as he came. Some still smiled like the outcome was obvious. Others went quieter now that the outsider had a real machine under him.

Rechelle followed a few paces behind with her arms folded and her heart beating too fast.

Hector stayed where he was one more second, eyes fixed on the rear of his car, then forced himself to walk after it.

Buster had been waiting with too much confidence in his mouth.

In his head the humiliation was already mapped out. He had assumed Lucas would climb into the BMW and bring a road car into a track fight, something sharp on the highway and soft in a place like this. He had even been playing with a full one-lap gap, the outsider swallowed so cleanly the lot would still be laughing when the Mark II came around alone. That version had felt perfect. Easy. Toxic in the way he liked.

Then the black Silvia rolled into the picture and ruined it.

Buster’s jaw flexed. When Rechelle first walked over to Hector, he had expected some tired shell to come out of the favor. A quack car. Something you lent a stranger because you did not care if it came back coughing. He had not expected this Nissan.

He forced the thought down.

’No matter. A better car does not invent a better driver.’

The machine could be sharp and the man inside it could still fold. His Mark II still had the edge in his mind.

He looked across as the Silvia locked into place beside him.

"Hope you’re ready, pretty boy."

Both cars sat on the line now.

Buster blipped the throttle once, just enough to make the Mark II bark and remind the front of the lot who was loudest. He wanted them feeling it before the race even started.

They did.

The crowd had packed in tight around the start. Drivers on hoods. Bodies pressed along the rough edge of the asphalt. Most of the noise came from the girls, tight singlets, bare stomachs, phones up, voices sharp with excitement. The whole front of the lot felt crowded and restless, heat rising off metal and skin at the same time.

Then the blonde stepped into the middle.

She was the same one who had been staring at Lucas earlier, and she walked out like the morning had finally given her a stage. Tiny bum-short jeans clung to her hips and left the round heavy curve of her ass half out as she moved. Her white singlet was worse, stretched tight and fighting a losing war against the big soft tits trying to spill out of it with every step. The fabric dug into her chest and still failed to hide the deep line between them. When she raised the flag above her head, her stomach pulled tight and her belly button showed clean in the gap between singlet and shorts.

She looked at Lucas first.

Then at Buster.

Then she lifted the flag higher.

The lot broke into screams. Buster stabbed the throttle and the Mark II answered hard.

VRRROOOOOM. VRRROOOOOM.

The revs climbed in a deep violent pull, then cracked higher until the whole car shuddered against the hold.

VOOOOOM-VOOOOOM-VRRROOOOOM.

Aggressive. Uneven. Like the engine was fighting to be let off the leash. Lucas sat quiet in the Silvia, hands steady, eyes forward, the black car breathing under him in a controlled idle that looked almost rude next to all that noise.

The blonde held them there one more second, chest rising with her breath, arm high, the whole start stretched tight around her.

Then she brought the flag down.

Buster reacted like he had been waiting all morning for permission. He dumped into a loud burnout the instant the flag moved.

SCREEEEEEE.

The rear tires locked into a sharp continuous scream under the engine’s roar. VRRROOOOOOOM. Thick white smoke exploded out behind the Mark II and rolled across the line. The noise was filthy and proud, all rubber and rage. Girls screamed for it. Somebody shouted his name. For a moment the whole start smelled of burned rubber and showmanship.

Lucas did none of it.

He held the line clean, fed the throttle once, and launched.

The Silvia punched forward without smoke and without theater, body low, grip tight, leaving the line in a hard straight surge while Buster was still busy turning the start into a performance. By the time the Mark II clawed through its own cloud and fully bit the asphalt, the black car was already moving with purpose beside him.

The first stretch of scarred track opened ahead.

The race was gone from the line.

And the lot ran after it with their eyes.
