Then.. "Xavier."

"Selene." He replied.

"When we get back," she said. "To Kenvale. To the office. To.." she paused. "To however, things are normally."

"Yes," he said.

"Is this.." she started. Stopped. Started differently. "What is this. Between us. Now."

Xavier looked at her.

There it is, he thought. The question she’s been carrying since Friday morning and has finally decided the forty five minutes in the air is the right place to ask it.

He thought about it properly. Not the system answer. Not the favorability gauge or the binding mechanics or the 5x weekly activation. The actual answer.

"Something real," he said. "That we don’t need to label yet."

She held his gaze.

She’s deciding if that’s enough, he thought. Whether something real without a label is a thing she can work with.

"Okay," she said finally. The word she said when she’d assessed something and found it sufficient.

"Okay," he said.

The plane hummed around them. The clouds outside the window. Forty five minutes between Millhaven and Kenvale.

Selene picked up the in-flight menu.

"They have good coffee on this airline," she said.

"Order it," he prompted her.

She ordered two without asking him.

There, he thought. That’s what okay looks like.

They landed at Kenvale International at 11:52AM.

The city through the terminal windows looked exactly as it always had. Commercial district visible in the distance. The particular Kenvale sky. Everything where it had been when they’d left Friday morning.

Same city, Xavier thought. Different everything else.

He booked a car from the arrivals hall. It came in eight minutes.

They drove through the Sunday city. Quieter than a weekday, the commercial district resting. Selene looked out the window at Kenvale moving past with the expression of someone seeing their city after a short absence and finding it both familiar and slightly recalibrated.

That’s what going somewhere does, Xavier thought. It changes how you see the place you came back from.

He pulled up outside her building at 12:34PM.

She got out. He got out too. Retrieved her bag from the boot and handed it to her on the pavement.

She took it.

Looked at him.

"Xavier," she said.

"Selene."

"Thursday," she said. "Let’s eat at my restaurant."

He looked at her.

Thursday evenings, he thought. She goes to that restaurant every Thursday. She told him that the first time. And now she’s telling him again.

Not an invitation, he thought. A standing one.

"Thursday," he said.

She almost smiled. Turned and walked toward her entrance.

At the door she turned back once, the same look she always gave at the end of an evening. Filing something away.

Then she went inside.

Xavier stood on the pavement outside her building with her city behind him and his city in front of him and the Panamera two blocks away where he’d left it Friday morning.

He checked the gauge.

Selene Adler — 74% → 79%

Five percent, he noted. From the return flight and the pavement and Thursday.

79%, he thought. Close to the binding threshold for the next level.

Not yet, he thought. But close.

He walked to the Panamera which he had parked at her house . Got in. Started the engine.

Home, he thought. Mama Elizabeth. The hostel. The base.

And Tuesday, he thought. Apex Fitness. Jade.

And Wednesday, he thought. Campus. Amira.

And Thursday, he thought. Her restaurant.

Everything waiting, he thought. Exactly where he’d left it.

He pulled out his phone and made some transactions.

[ Net Balance: $20,057,088.00 → $20,057,133.00 ]

$20,057,133, he noted. Home.

Millhaven, he thought. Done.

He started the engine and pulled out into the Sunday city.

_ _

Xavier pulled up outside the hostel at 1:15PM.

The street looked exactly as it always did. The residential quiet of a Sunday afternoon. Someone’s radio through an open window. A cat on the wall opposite that had been on that wall every time Xavier had come and gone for four months and showed no signs of reconsidering its position.

Kenvale, he thought. Still here.

He locked the Panamera and headed inside.

Mama Elizabeth’s door was open.

She looked at him when he came up the stairs. Looked at the bag on his shoulder. Looked at him again with the particular inventory of someone who had been keeping track of an absence and was now accounting for the return.

"You’re back," she said.

"I’m back ma," he replied.

She looked at him for a moment. The full read, the one that went beyond the bag and the clothes and the hour of arrival. The one that assessed something she didn’t have words for and had learned not to require words for.

"You look different," she said.

"I was only away for two days," he said.

"Still," she said.

She disappeared inside. Came back with a container. Covered, warm, the kind that communicated she’d been expecting him around this hour without being told.

He took it.

"Thank you ma," he said.

She waved once and went back inside.

Xavier looked at the closed door for a moment.

She had food ready, he thought. Sunday afternoon. Two days since she’d seen him. Food ready.

Some people, he thought. Just decide.

The room was exactly as he’d left it.

Desk clean. MacBook in its spot. The organised shelf. The wardrobe with two Hartley suits and four more on order. The speaker in the corner. The city through the window doing its Sunday afternoon thing.

Same room, he thought. Same four walls.

He set the bag down. Sat at the desk. Opened his banking app.

$20,077,383, he noted. Past twenty million. Passive return already running before I’ve done anything.

He leaned back in the chair.

Millhaven, he thought. Two days. Two acquisitions. One mission complete. One binding confirmed. And whatever happened between leaving and coming back that can’t be tracked by any of the system’s metrics.
