Xavier shook hands. Sat across from them. David opened a folder. Xavier had read the overview three times already but let him walk through it anyway.

Let the other person feel useful, his previous life’s training surfaced. Information you already have costs nothing to receive again.

Xavier listened. Asked two questions. Both ones he already knew the answers to, both ones that made David and Christine feel the meeting was being taken seriously. Vincent watched from the head of the table with the expression he wore when he was reading something and finding it satisfactory.

At 11:15AM Xavier’s phone vibrated once under the table.

He checked it.

$4,359,014, he thought. Past four million.

One third of the quest target, he noted. Six more acquisitions remaining. All small businesses. Nothing that draws serious attention. He glanced at Selene sitting at the far end of the table with her tablet and her composed expression and the navy suit registering somewhere behind her eyes.

And it’s not just business, he thought. Something else is building in this room too. Something the investment portfolio tracker doesn’t measure.

Patient, he reminded himself. Everything in its own time. Selene stood up mid meeting and went back to her desk duty, her outfit announcing itself as she went through the door.

Xavier pocketed his phone and refocused on David finishing the ownership structure section.

The meeting wrapped at 11:45AM. David and Christine gathered their folders and left. Vincent stayed.

"Good acquisition," Vincent said when the door closed.

"The numbers worked," Xavier said.

"They always work when you look at them," Vincent said. He paused. Leaned back slightly in his chair with the expression of someone who had something worth saying and was deciding how to say it. "Xavier."

"Vincent."

"At your age. Acquiring small businesses, building a portfolio, learning how capital compounds at the ground level.." he paused "most people your age are still trying to figure out what they want. You already know what you’re doing." He held Xavier’s gaze. "Small businesses today build the infrastructure for larger acquisitions tomorrow. The discipline you’re developing now. The patience, the timing, the understanding of when to move and when to hold. That’s what separates people who accumulate from people who build." Another pause. "Don’t disappoint me. You have potential. I can see it clearly and I don’t say that often."

Xavier looked at him across the clean desk.

Vincent Hale, he thought. Financial crime investigator. Three months of watching my activities before reaching out. He held the man’s gaze. And now sitting across from me telling me I have potential like he’s decided to invest in something beyond the partnership.

"I won’t," Xavier said simply.

Vincent nodded once. The nod of someone who had said what needed saying and considered it done.

They shook hands. Xavier walked out.

Selene was already back at the standing desk.

She looked up when he came out of the meeting room. This time she spoke before he reached her.

"How did it go," she said.

She asked, he thought. First time asking about a meeting outcome. Not professional protocol just genuine curiosity.

"Well," he said. He slowed slightly as he passed. "Third acquisition confirmed."

"Gerald Obi, Meridian Street and now the distribution company," she said. "Three acquisitions in under two weeks."

"Yes," he said.

She looked at him with something in her expression harder to read than the previous looks. Not the professional register. Not the half second. Something more considered than either.

"You’re very deliberate," she said. "About everything."

"I try to be," he said.

She held his gaze for a moment.

Then..."The navy works better than the charcoal."

Xavier looked at her.

She had already looked back at her tablet.

He walked to the lift.

5% favorability, he thought. Still 5%. He pressed the button. But she told me the navy works better. Unprompted. Specific. Personal. The lift arrived. That’s not 5% behaviour.

The gauge measures affection, he thought. Not interest. Those are still different things.

He almost reached for his phone to ask for her number right there in the lift.

Why don’t I just—

He stopped that thought before it finished itself.

No, he thought. Not like that. Not yet.

He looked at the closing lift doors.

I want my women to feel genuine towards me, he thought. Actually genuine. Not just responding to money or position or whatever version of impressive I’m currently presenting. He leaned against the back wall of the lift. Amira never cared about the money. She cared before she knew there was money. That’s the difference. He thought about Selene. I want that from her too. Whatever moves the gauge past 5%. I want it to be real. Not manufactured. Not bought.

He drove back toward campus with the remaining cap space on his mind.

$80,000 remaining cap, he noted. Acquisition done. Now cycle the rest.

He made two calls from the car. Donations to organisations he’d been rotating through for months. Larger amounts than before.

He pulled into the campus car park at 1PM.

Four million, he thought. Third acquisition done. Investment portfolio at $1,110,000.

He locked the Panamera and walked toward the gate.

The navy works better than the charcoal, he thought.

He almost smiled.

Progress, he thought.

Let’s keep moving.
