Chapter 182 — The Region Beyond the Formation

The ancient formation continued releasing faint spatial fluctuations.

Aether stood before the central structure, examining the patterns that had illuminated during its recent resonance. The changes were subtle, but they were becoming increasingly frequent.

Beside him, the Ancient Origin Earth Dragon studied the formation.

"Young Master, the network is becoming more active. Its individual structures are gradually responding to one another."

"Could this activation expose whatever the network is concealing?"

"Possibly. However, I believe we're overlooking something."

The dragon pointed toward several intersecting formation patterns.

"These structures stabilize the surrounding space, but their arrangement isn't consistent with a simple spatial stabilization network. Some of the energy is being directed elsewhere."

"Where?"

"That is what I cannot determine yet."

Aether considered the explanation before summoning several shadows.

"Spread out. Investigate the structures we haven't examined. I want their locations, energy signatures, and connections mapped. If you encounter an unusual spatial fluctuation, report it before approaching."

The shadows dispersed.

Aether had ten registered shadows now. Using only one or two for every investigation would be an unnecessary waste of their capabilities. Their different characteristics made them useful for exploring several areas simultaneously.

A notification appeared in his private vision.

[Hidden Mission: Trace the Ancient Formation Network]

[Objective: Discover the central structure regulating the spatial network within Verdant Origin Territory.]

[Reward: 25,000 System Points.]

[Status: Incomplete.]

Aether dismissed the notification.

The mission was worth pursuing, but he wouldn't rush into an unknown formation simply because the System had offered a reward.

"Let's examine the surrounding terrain. The formation's energy must originate somewhere."

The dragon nodded.

Several kilometers away, Mu Qingxue was examining an unusual patch of vegetation.

Her Verdant Binding Physique allowed her to sense changes in nearby plants and perceive the energy circulating through their roots. Ordinarily, this ability helped her locate medicinal herbs and identify unusual vegetation.

Today, however, something was wrong.

The plants weren't simply growing toward a source of energy. Their roots were extending in several directions, forming a pattern that repeated itself across the entire area.

Mu Qingxue carefully examined one of the roots.

"Why are they avoiding this section?"

She followed the root's direction and noticed that several plants had grown around a small patch of seemingly ordinary soil. Even the smallest roots appeared to turn away from it.

She released a strand of her energy, allowing it to flow through the surrounding vegetation.

A faint vibration travelled through the ground.

Her expression changed.

There was something beneath the soil, but it wasn't producing the energy that nourished the plants. Instead, it was interfering with their natural growth.

She carefully withdrew her energy.

Forcing her way through an unknown formation would be foolish. She needed to understand what she was dealing with first.

Aether received a report from one of his shadows.

An unusual formation structure had been discovered near a valley several kilometers away.

He and the dragon immediately headed in that direction.

When they arrived, Aether noticed Mu Qingxue examining the vegetation.

He recognized her from their earlier encounters within the competition grounds.

"Miss Mu."

Mu Qingxue turned toward him.

"Young Master Draven."

Their exchange was polite and brief. They had encountered each other before, but their relationship remained that of acquaintances.

Aether glanced at the surrounding plants.

"Have you discovered something unusual?"

"Yes. The roots are forming a pattern beneath the soil, but they seem to avoid a particular section. I suspect something underground is interfering with their growth."

Aether examined the area.

"May I investigate?"

"Of course."

He crouched and released a small amount of Origin Energy into the ground.

The dragon examined the surrounding vegetation before suddenly raising his hand.

"Wait, Young Master."

Aether stopped.

"What is it?"

"Don't direct your energy toward the center. Look at the roots surrounding it."

Aether examined them again.

The dragon continued, "The roots aren't avoiding the underground structure randomly. Their growth is being redirected along specific paths. The formation is influencing the surrounding environment without releasing enough energy to be detected through ordinary perception."

Mu Qingxue nodded.

"That's what I noticed. The plants are responding to something, but the influence is unusually subtle."

Aether looked at her.

"Your observation was important. Without it, we might have mistaken this for ordinary spatial interference."

He redirected his Origin Energy toward the surrounding roots instead of the concealed center.

Gradually, several faint lines appeared beneath the soil.

They formed a circular pattern, with multiple channels extending toward distant locations.

The dragon's expression became serious.

"This is not merely another stabilizing formation."

"What have you recognized?"

"An ancient concealment principle. The formation is suppressing the spatial presence of something within its boundary. The surrounding structures may be maintaining the concealment across a much larger area."

Aether's eyes narrowed.

"A hidden region?"

"That is my suspicion. I cannot confirm what lies inside, but the arrangement strongly suggests it."

Mu Qingxue looked between them.

"So the strange growth patterns were caused by a concealed formation?"

"Most likely," Aether replied.

She examined the exposed lines.

"Then the plants aren't being nourished by the formation. They're adapting to its influence."

"Exactly."

Aether studied the pattern again. Her observation had revealed something the formation itself hadn't exposed through its energy fluctuations.

"Thank you, Miss Mu. Your discovery was genuinely useful."

Mu Qingxue gave a small nod.

"I'm glad I could help. I was only investigating the unusual plants, so I didn't expect to discover something like this."

"Sometimes an unexpected observation is more valuable than following an established method."

She considered his words before collecting her medicinal plants.

"I should continue exploring. Good luck with your investigation, Young Master Draven."

"Likewise, Miss Mu."

She departed without lingering.

Aether watched her leave briefly before turning back toward the formation.

The encounter had been short, but it had provided an important clue. Mu Qingxue had noticed the environmental influence through her own abilities, while the dragon had recognized the ancient formation principle.

Neither discovery alone would have revealed the concealed region so quickly.

After Mu Qingxue left, the dragon examined the formation more carefully.

"Young Master, I suspect the hidden region is considerably larger than this valley."

"Because of the number of connected structures?"

"Yes. If this formation is responsible for concealing an entire region, the network must have a central control structure. Finding it should reveal how the concealment operates."

Before Aether could respond, two shadows returned from different directions.

Their reports contained several new locations.

Aether examined the information.

One structure was buried beneath an ancient stone platform. Another was located near a mountain ridge. A third appeared to be connected to a large underground energy channel.

He compared their positions.

"They form an incomplete boundary."

The dragon looked at the locations.

"Indeed. And the gaps between them are too consistent to be accidental."

Aether's expression became thoughtful.

"Then the central structure should be somewhere within the area they're enclosing."

"That is the most likely explanation."

Another shadow returned, carrying a more unusual report.

It had discovered an ancient stone pillar almost entirely buried beneath the ground. Unlike the other structures, this pillar contained no visible formation patterns.

Instead, its surface carried a series of worn inscriptions.

The dragon approached and carefully brushed away the accumulated dust.

His golden eyes narrowed.

"These inscriptions..."

"Do you recognize them?"

"They describe a sealing principle. More importantly, they mention a central sanctuary."

Aether's attention sharpened.

"An ancient sanctuary?"

"That is what the surviving characters suggest. I cannot determine what it contains, but the inscriptions describe it as a region separated from the ordinary spatial environment."

Aether looked toward the distant mountains.

So the formation network wasn't simply protecting the territory's spatial stability. It was also concealing an ancient sanctuary.

A new notification appeared.

[System Analysis Complete]

[An ancient spatial concealment structure has been identified.]

[The structure is connected to the formation network within Verdant Origin Territory.]

[Possible function: Concealment and isolation of a restricted region.]

[Central control structure: Not yet located.]

Aether dismissed the panel.

"Now we have a direction."

The dragon nodded.

"However, Young Master, we should be cautious. A sanctuary sealed for an unknown period may contain dangers alongside whatever treasures remain."

"I know. We'll investigate before deciding whether to enter."

Far beyond the territory, Aria lowered her spear after completing another training sequence.

Lyra approached her.

"You're improving quickly."

"So are you."

Seris joined them, carrying several cultivation records they had been studying. Sylvara was discussing their next training arrangements with the others.

They weren't idle while Aether remained inside the territory. Each had their own cultivation goals, and they intended to make use of the opportunities available to them.

Mu Qingxue was among the participants still exploring within the territory, while the girls outside continued their preparations.

Nearby, Yun Xiya observed the distant sky.

The spatial fluctuations from Verdant Origin Territory had become more noticeable.

She didn't yet know what was happening, but the disturbance was unusual enough to warrant attention.

Inside Verdant Origin Territory, Aether stood before the ancient stone pillar.

The dragon had finished examining its inscriptions.

"Young Master, there is one more detail."

"What is it?"

"The sanctuary appears to have been sealed deliberately. The formation wasn't simply constructed to hide its location. It was designed to keep its spatial boundary separated from the rest of the territory."

"Which means activating the central structure could open the boundary."

"Possibly. But we shouldn't assume that opening it will be safe."

Aether looked toward the locations reported by his shadows.

"Then we'll find the central structure first."

At that moment, the ground trembled.

A distant mountain released a faint golden light, followed by another illumination from a different direction.

The formation network was responding.

Far beneath the earth, something enormous began resonating with the surrounding structures.

Aether looked toward the source.

The dragon's expression became solemn.

"Young Master, I believe the sanctuary is beginning to reveal itself."

Aether's eyes narrowed.

"Then we should prepare. If the formation is activating, other cultivators may notice it soon."

The ancient inscriptions on the stone pillar began to glow.

For the first time in countless years, the seal surrounding the hidden sanctuary had begun to loosen.
