Chapter 2930: Chapter 2036: Reversal (Part 2)

If the first half of the sentence had Vice Chairman Morgan feeling smug, the second half left him dumbstruck.

This third person was actually also "shamelessly" praising Bai Xiaosheng.

Wrong, all wrong!

All of these people are saying it wrong!

That’s not what happened!

That’s not what we set up!

Vice Chairman Morgan exploded to his feet and bellowed, "Shut up!"

"Vice Chairman Morgan, why won’t you let him finish? Isn’t this the truth!" Li Yunyuan slammed the table and shouted.

"Truth my ass, it’s fake!" Vice Chairman Morgan’s forehead veins bulged as he ground out the words.

"Otherwise, I’ll switch to another witness and let them speak!" Wen Yan’s voice went up an octave as he said coldly.

The atmosphere instantly tightened.

Right at this moment, someone suddenly stood up, cutting in with a sharp voice, "Everyone, please be quiet!"

The voice was so piercing it instantly drowned out all the male voices.

Everyone couldn’t help looking over, and were startled to see that the one standing and speaking was Caroline.

Bear in mind, whether it was Morgan or Li Yunyuan, or even Wen Yan, they were all at vice chairman level. The division presidents present, though they usually lorded it over their own turf like regional governors, in a clash of titans like this kept their mouths shut.

The only one who’d been speaking was Bai Xiaosheng, but as a division president currently under accusation, he had the standing to speak.

This woman Caroline—had she gone crazy? What was she butting in for, what was she trying to stir up, and she actually started out by ordering the vice chairmen to be quiet.

Wen Yan, Morgan, and Li Yunyuan all turned to look at Caroline, equally puzzled.

"Everyone, I personally specialize in contracts, audits, and accounts. I believe you all know that," Caroline said solemnly. "So, Vice Chairman Morgan asked me to review these materials."

As soon as she said that, Vice Chairman Morgan’s pupils suddenly contracted.

There are some things that, even if everyone knows, can’t be dragged out in public; had Caroline lost her mind!

The evidence submitted by the Sixth Business Division, as a vice chairman Morgan could of course review.

But what was Caroline’s status that she had also previewed them? Saying this aloud was highly inappropriate, completely indefensible!

Vice Chairman Morgan suddenly realized that for Caroline to disregard everything and say this in public, something far more serious must have happened—something he did not yet know.

Sure enough, Caroline pointed straight at the evidence on another large screen and said in a deep voice, "These are not the evidence materials we reviewed. They’ve been switched!"

Her words stunned the crowd for a beat, then triggered an uproar.

"Switched?"

"Is that for real?"

"I thought so too—those accounts and contracts we just saw didn’t seem to have any problems at all."

...

Vice Chairman Morgan’s eyes narrowed sharply as he looked at the big screen, but even in this matter, the part he’d personally handled was minimal.

"Caroline, are you sure about what you’re saying?" Vice Chairman Morgan barked.

"I can swear these materials have been changed!" Caroline said in a low voice.

Their exchange left everyone present utterly shocked.

Others might have doubts, but Wen Yan could not stay silent, because just now, besides Vice Chairman Morgan, only he had handled the USB drive—at most there was one more operator.

Caroline’s words were clearly casting suspicion on him.

Wen Yan walked straight to the machine, pulled out the USB drive, and handed it to Vice Chairman Morgan and Caroline. "Vice Chairman Morgan, Miss Caroline, this evidence was produced by you two. Here it has only passed through my hands and the operator’s over there, all under everyone’s eyes. We have surveillance footage we can pull up. Whether there’s a problem with it, we owe everyone an explanation."

Vice Chairman Morgan took the USB drive without a word and passed it to Caroline.

Caroline accepted it and studied it closely, then froze for a moment.

The thing looked exactly the same as the USB drive she had checked yesterday; no difference at all.

Even so, she was certain that only the drive was the same—the contents were absolutely not!

"I request to see the surveillance footage!" Caroline said.

Vice Chairman Morgan immediately nodded.

In a matter this serious, no one objected.

Wen Yan immediately had the technicians operate on the spot in full view.

In fact, from removing the USB drive to playing it back, the entire process took only a short time; even reviewing frame by frame wouldn’t take long.

The conference room had high-definition cameras, and from more than one angle. That segment of footage was replayed several times, and no one present saw anything wrong.

Vice Chairman Morgan’s and Caroline’s faces turned extremely ugly.

"Are you sure it was changed?" Vice Chairman Morgan asked Caroline in a low, harsh voice.

Caroline’s gaze was complicated; she was utterly certain of her judgment.

The contents that had been played were clearly wrong. Last night, the excitement she’d felt while reviewing them hadn’t been fake.

The original materials really could have screwed Bai Xiaosheng to death, but what she’d just seen contained no major problems.

That alone spoke volumes!

But if the materials really had been tampered with or even replaced, she found it inconceivable—impossible!

Because whether deleting, altering, or replacing, you would need an extremely thorough grasp of the contents, and it couldn’t be done in such a short time.

The key question was: at what point did the materials change...

That was what Caroline found most utterly baffling, most impossible to make sense of.

Bai Xiaosheng sat there, expression utterly calm, watching Caroline and Vice Chairman Morgan struggle in vain to figure it out.

A faintly mocking smile flickered in his eyes.

Caroline was right—the materials had indeed been switched!

But it hadn’t happened just now.

Nor had it happened here; it had happened in Caroline’s own home!

These so-called pieces of evidence had come from Mrs. Margery, who of course had backups and had handed them to him.

Not only that, the altered version had also been prepared by Mrs. Margery’s side.

To produce another version that was this seamless—so flawless that Caroline herself hadn’t noticed at first glance—it had to be done by the same team of people.

As for how the materials were quietly swapped out at Caroline’s place, it actually wasn’t hard.

All it took was an inside man Caroline would never suspect.

That inside man was Caroline’s younger brother—Robert!

Even if you beat Caroline to death she would never think that her most trusted ally, the brother who’d always been reliable, would stab her in the back at such a critical moment.

"Vice Chairman Morgan, Miss Caroline, you’ve watched it so many times—there’s no problem at all, is there?" Wen Yan frowned and said coolly.

They’d asked for the footage and it had been shown—over and over. Even the others present were growing impatient, watching the two of them.

"If you can’t provide more effective testimony and physical evidence, then I can only believe Mr. Bai Xiaosheng is innocent—and as for you two, this amounts to an attempted frame-up." Wen Yan used the most polite posture to deliver the least polite words.

Vice Chairman Morgan and Caroline’s faces changed; they exchanged a look.

If the materials had been switched, they could still claim that someone had swapped them. But why had those witnesses suddenly changed their testimonies? They had clearly already been bought by their side.

Who had the ability to overturn those people’s stance?

Vice Chairman Morgan and Caroline simultaneously thought of one person: Mrs. Margery!

As much as they hated to admit it, as much as they could hardly believe it, there was no second explanation!

Mrs. Margery had betrayed them!

That was too serious, too terrifying, too utterly beyond comprehension!

If that was really the case, the situation’s complexity and the consequences’ unpredictability made them feel genuine fear, even more than their hatred of Mrs. Margery.

Right now, what they needed to do was not keep tangling. At this point in the proceedings, they no longer had any means of attack.

What they needed now was to pull back as fast as possible—ideally to end this damned meeting quickly, then go deal with the upheaval on Mrs. Margery’s side!

Vice Chairman Morgan and Caroline rapidly exchanged glances, reaching agreement.

Vice Chairman Morgan raised his voice. "Given the current complications, I will reserve judgment. The word ’frame-up’ is premature. I will provide the group with a reasonable explanation within one week."

With those words, he was effectively bringing the accusations against Bai Xiaosheng to a close.

Everyone present had mixed feelings and looked around at one another.

Vice Chairman Morgan and Caroline each sat back down.

"So now, does anyone else wish to speak?" Wen Yan asked.

No one spoke.

Since Vice Chairman Morgan had phrased it that way, even Li Yunyuan said no more, leaving him a bit of face.

His thought was: if Vice Chairman Morgan failed to produce a reasonable explanation later, he would latch onto him and never let go.

Just then, someone rose to his feet unhurriedly.

It was Bai Xiaosheng.

"No one has anything to say?"

Bai Xiaosheng swept his gaze around the room, then smiled, his eyes locking onto Vice Chairman Morgan, suddenly razor-sharp.

"Then I do."
