Chapter 145: Interest Paid in Blood

  • Next Chapter

Varek’s first swing cut the empty vault in half.

The executioner’s sword released a gray line that passed through marble, steel, and three abandoned counters before stopping, the sound of it less like a cut than a single deep exhale. Nova Corps scattered. Two Neva Players failed to move quickly enough and died to their own commander’s attack, and Varek didn’t so much as glance at the bodies.

➤[Target designation confirmed: Murderer.]

➤[Player Killer activated.]

➤[All attributes increased by 10% against the designated target.]

Damien met him before he could swing again.

The First Blood Dagger struck the executioner’s sword near its handle. Damien’s hidden Strength changed the blade’s path just enough. Gray force tore through the ceiling instead of Grace’s chest, bringing down a slow rain of plaster.

Varek’s scarred face tightened with something like interest.

"Level 37."

"Yes."

"That number lies."

"No. You assumed."

Varek kicked him across the vault.

Nightglass absorbed part of the impact, but Damien still broke a counter clean in half when he landed.

Around them, the ambush became several battles at once. Daria combined wind and fire into a narrow burning spiral that curved carefully around every allied squad. Hamari’s weapons changed with every range in a blur of hands, rifle, pistols, compact launcher, then rifle again. Grace stood before injured officers and grew stronger each time an attack struck her armor, the halo behind her brighter every time.

Doctor Smoke dragged the wounded toward Eli’s remaining route.

"Exit Six active," Eli reported. "For now."

Rook’s voice came from the upper floor, breathless. "Squad Two has eight casualties. Northern convoy retreating. I can hold the water tunnel for four minutes."

"Three," Corvin corrected through the command channel. "Structural collapse projection—"

Damien cut him off. "All teams withdraw through Six. Rook controls timing."

Varek used his named skill.

➤[Headsman’s Reach]

The executioner’s sword extended through gray energy far beyond its length. Damien blocked once. The second blow tore Duskveil from one shoulder. The third struck Nightglass and opened two plates across his chest, cold air rushing into the gap.

Damien stepped into the fourth anyway.

Walk of Night made the movement silent. Varek reacted to the expected footfall a fraction too late. Damien entered the sword’s minimum range and drove his dagger beneath the murderer’s ribs.

Varek caught his wrist before it could go deeper.

They stood close enough to hear each other breathe. ℯℯ𝘭.𝘤ℴ𝘮

"You can fight," Varek said.

"You sound disappointed."

"Relieved."

He head-butted Damien and threw him into the wall hard enough to crack the stone behind it.

Above them, an explosion removed Exit Five entirely. Eli’s marked route flickered like a dying signal.

"Two minutes," Rook said.

The captain appeared at the tunnel entrance a moment later with blood covering one side of his uniform. Behind him came wounded soldiers, freed borrowers, and Mina carrying the black ledger against her chest like something that might still bite.

Neva reinforcements followed close behind them.

Rook turned to hold the line.

"Move!"

Damien saw the choice laid out in front of him with terrible clarity.

Varek stood between him and the vault. One more exchange might finish the murderer. The water tunnel behind Rook was filling with civilians and injured allies who had nowhere else to go. If Damien continued the duel, Varek’s people would reach them first.

The duplicate in the Tower had once accused him of hiding behind stronger people.

Leadership did not mean proving the accusation wrong every single time it mattered.

"Daria, collapse the east stair. Grace, tunnel entrance. Hamari, cover Rook." Damien disengaged from Varek without looking back at him. "Everyone leaves."

Varek laughed. "Running?"

"Leading."

Damien reached Rook and cut down the first Neva enforcer entering the tunnel. Grace replaced him at the opening a heartbeat later. Hamari’s shots crossed over their shoulders without ever touching an ally.

Eli held both hands against a Pathfinder mark carved into the wall, straining visibly to keep it lit.

"Route is breaking," he said. "Someone has to maintain the return point from this side."

"Set it and move," Damien ordered.

"It disappears if I do."

Rook looked up at the ceiling. Cracks were spreading above them, widening as they watched.

"Heroes make speeches," he said. "Soldiers make exits."

He shoved Damien into the tunnel bodily and took Eli’s position at the wall himself.

"Captain—"

"Get them out."

Varek appeared behind the Neva line a second later.

His sword passed through two of his own people without hesitation and entered Rook’s back.

Rook remained standing long enough to keep the path open behind him.

Eli threw his silver coin to Damien across the gap.

"I know another shortcut."

Before Damien could grab him and pull him through, Eli stepped away from the return mark and ran toward Rook instead. He struck the unstable wall with both hands, redirected the collapsing route, and forced the tunnel open for another ten seconds.

Damien carried two injured soldiers through in that window. Grace followed with Doctor Smoke close behind her. Daria came last, staff dragging sparks off the tunnel wall.

The route closed the instant she cleared it.

The entire bank sank twelve meters into the ground behind them, the sound of it swallowed almost immediately by silence.

Damien turned back anyway.

There was no tunnel left. No mark. No signal from Eli.

Rook’s status became Deceased.

Eli’s became Unknown.

Across Region 21, twenty-seven allied officers and agents died in the coordinated attacks that night. Benny disappeared from government custody in the confusion. The black ledger in Mina’s hands erased itself before she could stop it, the numbers dissolving off the page one line at a time.

Varek survived.

Neva had learned the identities, Classes, and methods of Nova Corps.

The first operation ended with no loan-shark leader captured and no branch destroyed.

Damien closed his hand around Eli’s silver coin, the metal still warm from his pocket.

He had saved most of the team.

It did not feel like enough.

Rescue crews worked through the ruins until sunrise. Damien joined them despite Doctor Smoke ordering him onto a stretcher twice. He moved broken concrete with his hidden Strength, listened for heartbeats in the dust-choked dark, and found three officers trapped beneath a collapsed stairwell. None was Eli.

Varek’s sword wound had reopened across Damien’s chest somewhere in the digging. Blood darkened Nightglass Armor at the seams, a slow spreading stain he didn’t stop to look at.

"You are becoming one of my least cooperative patients," Doctor Smoke said, finally catching him long enough to press a bandage against it.

"How many are worse?"

"John."

"Reasonable."

At 07:12, Martin formally ended the search-and-rescue phase. Recovery teams would continue. The wording meant they expected bodies now, not survivors.

Mina read the names of the dead in a flat, careful voice. Rook’s came first. Twenty-six followed after his. Six had children. One had been three days from retirement. Another had volunteered for this exact assignment because his sister’s debt contract was stored somewhere inside Black Ledger, and he’d wanted to be the one to find it.

Damien memorized every name as she said it, holding each one a moment before letting the next arrive.

Martin stood beside the crater where the bank used to be. "This operation was authorized by me."

"And led in the field by me," Damien said.

"Do not collect blame like one of their contracts."

"I’m collecting facts."

Martin looked at the coin still in Damien’s hand. "Then include the fact that two hundred and fourteen people escaped because you abandoned Varek and ordered the withdrawal."

Damien did not feel better hearing it.

But he included it anyway.

Facts did not absolve him. They only kept grief from rewriting a defeat into something simpler than it had actually been.
