Chapter 148: False Four
Damien created four operations that would never happen.
The first targeted a debt archive beneath Northbridge Station at 02:10. It was delivered to Corvin Hale and two members of his coordination office.
The second targeted a warehouse in the eastern freight district at 03:40. Elias shared it with the Interior Ministry.
The third placed Nova Corps near an illegal clinic at dawn. Martin issued that version to military intelligence.
The fourth named an apartment tower in Old Viremont. Mina inserted it into the judicial warrant system.
Each plan looked complete. Each contained a different team arrangement, approach route, and minute of attack. None mentioned that Hamari had placed remote cameras around all four sites.
"Four baited hooks," Grace said.
"And we are not on any of them," Hamari added. "This operation lacks exercise."
Doctor Smoke lit a cigarette beneath a NO SMOKING sign. "Espionage is waiting until someone else becomes impatient."
They waited.
Waiting became its own operation. Nova Corps used no shared headquarters. Daria watched Northbridge through reflected water in a rooftop tank, never once looking directly at the station itself. Hamari rotated between three nests and left a weapon in each so Armament Regina could answer without travel. Grace guarded Mina while pretending to be an impatient client at a legal office, complaining about paperwork with genuine, weaponized conviction. Doctor Smoke treated surveillance officers for dehydration and insulted anyone who called the work inactive.
Damien moved between sites on foot.
The silent half of Walk of Night helped him avoid ordinary tails, but the fixed sequence made long-distance travel awkward. Twice he caught himself repeating the same turn pattern in view of cameras. He stopped, changed shoes, and continued with deliberately noisy steps instead.
Mastering one half did not make its weaknesses disappear.
At every false target, they logged more than Neva arrivals. They measured which government terminals accessed nearby transport records, when unmarked vehicles changed routes, and which private security firms suddenly received overnight contracts. A leak was not one message. It left ripples through people who did not know what caused them.
Mina built those ripples into a timeline.
Northbridge's camera failure had been requested sixteen minutes after Corvin's file opened. The maintenance order used an official template but a retired supervisor's credential. The six Players entered only after a nearby police patrol received a false domestic emergency.
Somebody did not merely warn Neva.
Somebody inside the government helped prepare the trap.
The fifth plan would test whether that somebody sat at Corvin's desk or merely worked near it.
The apartment tower received no unusual traffic. The illegal clinic continued treating criminals with ordinary discretion. Two vehicles visited the freight warehouse and left.
Northbridge Station changed.
At 00:58, maintenance workers closed Platform Nine for emergency repairs. At 01:21, six Players entered through a staff corridor. At 01:43, the security cameras developed identical faults. By 02:00, a mana barrier surrounded the fictional archive.
Corvin's plan had moved.
It still was not enough.
The plan had passed through two clerks, a communications technician, and the station commander after leaving his office. Damien refused to accuse the first obvious person when Neva had already demonstrated layers.
"We raid anyway," he said.
Martin stared at him across the private meeting room. "You told me every target was false."
"It was. Neva turned one into a real gathering."
"Or a trap."
"Both can contain evidence."
Nova Corps did not enter Northbridge. Damien assigned an unaffiliated surveillance unit led by Lieutenant Sera Noll, a Level 41 Scout who disliked heroics and wore an old red scarf to every operation, the same one, faded at the edges, no matter what else changed about her gear.
"My orders?" Sera asked.
"Observe. Identify. Leave if noticed."
"No arrest?"
"No."
"I like you already."
At 02:10, the Neva Players activated their barrier and waited for Nova Corps to arrive. Sera's team photographed faces, mana signatures, and vehicles from a building across the river.
At 02:14, one Neva Player began arguing with another. At 02:20, half the group left. At 02:31, a black vehicle collected the leader.
Sera followed from far enough away to avoid every standard detection skill.
The vehicle entered a parking structure owned by a government logistics contractor.
Corvin's office used the same contractor.
"Still circumstantial," Mina said.
Grace leaned over the image. "How much circumstance becomes permission to hit someone?"
"More than this."
Sera's team recovered one useful object after the ambush group departed: a portable contract anchor stamped with a maker's code. Mina traced it to a shell workshop that serviced eleven Black Ledger offices and one underground facility called Reserve Nine.
The name appeared nowhere in government databases. Its utility payments ran beneath a condemned industrial district. Its food orders could supply two hundred people. Medical shipments included drugs used to keep prisoners conscious.
Damien placed Eli's coin near the address.
It warmed.
This time, Mina felt it too.
"Pathfinder resonance," she said. "Weak. Intermittent."
Grace stood immediately. "Then we go."
"No."
Her chair struck the wall behind her. "We found him."
"We found a place connected to his path. If we attack now, Corvin knows the false plans exposed him. Reserve Nine empties before we arrive."
"He could be dying while we test paperwork."
Damien did not raise his voice. "And twenty-seven people died because we entered the first place they prepared. We do not give Varek the same fight twice."
Grace's anger did not disappear. It became still, coiled rather than released.
Daria intervened before that stillness broke into something else. "What is the next test?"
Damien showed them a fifth file.
This one contained a genuine route toward a broker archive, but the attack time was false. Corvin would receive it personally. Nobody else in his office would touch the document. Mina had created a contract mark that would record every reader without appearing active.
If the warning moved again, they would have a chain rather than a suspicion.
"And Reserve Nine?" Hamari asked.
"We watch every exit."
Sera Noll accepted that assignment without complaint. Her red scarf disappeared into the industrial district before midnight.
Damien placed Eli's coin back in his pocket.
It gave one faint pulse.
Not a message.
Not yet.
But it was enough to turn a funeral without a body into a rescue plan.
