Chapter 55: Magic Or No Magic?

"What kind of response is that?"

Kyle looked at the response sent by the seller. From the way she had replied, it almost sounded like the seller herself was wondering what the rainbow was supposed to mean.

He quickly followed up with another message to make sure there was no misunderstanding and to confirm that what he had seen was indeed a rainbow.

[FeatherlessBiped69er: Yes, it’s a blinding, multi-colored rainbow as far as I can see. It is glowing all together, like how you see a bright-colored rainbow after the rain.]

After sending the message, Kyle waited.

A few seconds passed, than a minute, than another and without even realizing few minutes had already passed. Still, there was no response.

"What happened? Why isn’t there any response? It’s been minutes already."

Kyle grew suspicious.

The indicator beside the seller’s name was still green, meaning she was online, but there was no response from her side. The typing indicator appeared occasionally, only to disappear before she actually sent anything.

’What the hell is going on?’

A worrying thought entered his mind.

"Fuck, did the seller scam me?"

Although fifty System Points weren’t a particularly significant amount for him anymore, getting scammed would still sting. Even if someone cheated you out of a few cents, it was still annoying because you knew you had been duped.

But while that was his primary concern, another thought also appeared in his mind.

’Or do I just not have any elemental affinity, and she’s hesitating to tell me?’

That possibility was considerably more devastating.

Kyle had been excited after seeing the crystal explode into a brilliant rainbow of colors. He had immediately started imagining himself learning magic and becoming ridiculously powerful.

But what if that excitement had been for nothing? What if he didn’t possess even a single magical affinity?

If that were the case, he would have to find another way to gain strength for his journey into other worlds.

Kyle stared at the chat window.

’There’s no point guessing.’

He could simply ask the seller directly.

Just as he was about to send another message, her response finally arrived.

[BroomBroomLady: Pardon me for ignoring you. I was looking through the books to find out what a rainbow was supposed to represent, but I couldn’t find a definite answer to it right now.]

Kyle’s expression relaxed slightly.

’At least I wasn’t scammed.’

That was the first thing that came to his mind.

However, the seller’s response was both hopeful and worrying.

She couldn’t find a definite answer. That meant his result was unusual enough that even someone from a magical world couldn’t immediately identify it.

But it also meant there was still a possibility that he didn’t possess any elemental affinity at all.

Kyle decided not to torture himself with guesses.

[FeatherlessBiped69er: Thanks for the reply. I was growing anxious. By the way, does that mean I don’t have any magical talent or element within me at all? Please answer me honestly.]

He didn’t waste much time pondering the worst or best possibility. Since he could directly get his doubts cleared by the seller, he simply asked for a straight answer.

The seller responded soon afterward.

[BroomBroomLady: No, since you claim the crystal glowed brightly with multiple colors, that definitely means you have magical talent. As for the multiple colors, it may actually mean that you have talent for multiple elements too, but we need to check that first.]

Kyle’s eyes immediately widened.

’Multiple elements?’

That sounded fucking amazing.

But before he could get too excited, another message arrived.

[BroomBroomLady: The Magic Emperor in my world had the same type of awakening during his magical talent assessment ceremony. However, there were also cases in the past where the crystal was fooled because the users possessed demonic or dark magic. There was also a single documented case where the user didn’t have any magical talent, yet the crystal glowed with a bright rainbow, but it was later proven to be a hoax. So, we first need to confirm your result.]

Kyle stared at the message for several seconds.

The Magic Emperor had apparently awakened in the same way and that alone was enough to make his imagination run wild. He was pretty optimistic about it.

"Am I gonna be the next demonic emperor? Hue hue hue."

He said it with a sly smile while rubbing his palms together like he was planning something incredibly devious.

This response was music to his ears. At the very least, he definitely had magical talent.

Even if that talent turned out to be demonic in nature, it wasn’t necessarily bad for him.

’Something is better than nothing.’

He had spent his entire life believing magic was nothing more than fantasy, and now he had actual proof that it existed.

There was also a chance he possessed multiple elements. That was enough to make him excited.

[FeatherlessBiped69er: How do we check that out? What do I need to do for that?]

He proceeded to ask about the steps required to confirm his talent.

[BroomBroomLady: Well, to confirm that I would need you to learn actual magic. But don’t be worried, I won’t ask you to buy them. I would let you borrow them instead through a deal, and if you actually have magical talent, then you can buy them with a discount.]

Kyle nodded.

That sounded reasonable.

He wouldn’t have to waste a large number of System Points just to find out whether he could actually use magic.

However, the seller continued.

[BroomBroomLady: Also, for demonic magic, I would highly suggest you not do any tests at all. Since I assume you haven’t practiced magic or anything related to it, attempting to interact with demonic energy might cause you to become corrupted or possessed by it and driven insane or even into a killing spree. It is a very unstable form of energy.]

Kyle’s expression became slightly more serious.

[BroomBroomLady: I would have helped you confirm that if you were here in person, but since you are an otherworlder without any practice at all, I wouldn’t suggest or guide you to check your demonic talent because of its wicked and dangerous nature. Even saints have ended up getting corrupted by it, and you are just a novice.]

Kyle stared at the message.

"Alright, I might not become Supreme Demon Emperor after all because I’m not that guy, pal."

He sighed.

The consequences sounded far too grim to even try. Getting corrupted or possessed because he made a single mistake while testing demonic energy wasn’t exactly the kind of power-up he wanted.

’Yeah, let’s leave that shit alone.’

Kyle returned to the chat and quickly typed his response.

[FeatherlessBiped69er: Alright, thanks for the heads-up. Please send the contract. I will sign it. Also, please modify the clause with an option to pay in installments or give me time to gather the money since I might not have it all available.]

He pressed send.
