Chapter 14: Getting Ready For The Job
Chapter 14: Chapter 14: Getting Ready For The Job
"We’re keeping them," Xavier said, casually waving away her concern.
"They didn’t cost us enough to worry about. Just leave them here," he added.
"But what are we going to do with the rest?" Mira asked, looking at him.
"We can keep them for our children someday," Xavier said, smiling.
Mira froze. Her cheeks immediately turned red.
Xavier hadn’t meant anything provocative by it. To him, it was simply a practical suggestion. But Mira heard something completely different.
They had only known each other for a single day. Even though they were legally married, they were still unfamiliar with each other in many ways. She wasn’t anywhere near comfortable enough to casually discuss having children with him.
She lowered her head, too embarrassed to respond.
Xavier noticed her reaction but didn’t tease her. Instead, he glanced toward the clock.
"It’s getting late. Wait here," he said.
He stood up and left the room, with a smirk because he had continued to have an effect on Mira.
"I’ll make lunch," he said.
Xavier didn’t wait for a reply as he walked into the kitchen.
About an hour later, the dining table was covered with freshly prepared dishes.
The Scarlet Flame Rabbit meat turned out to be every bit as good as he had expected. Being a First Tier magical beast, the rabbit possessed unusually rich blood and life force, and its meat was exceptionally tender.
Before awakening his abilities, Xavier could easily eat several pounds in one meal. Now, however, his body had become considerably stronger. Even after reaching the Two Star Body Tempering Rank, he found himself feeling full after eating only a little over a pound.
Mira finished everything he couldn’t eat. Her slender figure made her appetite seem almost unbelievable. She was only around 1.65 meters tall and weighed roughly ninety pounds, yet she had no trouble consuming several pounds of magical beast meat.
Martial artists simply required far more nourishment than ordinary people. Even as a One Star Foundation Rank practitioner, Mira only managed around four pounds today. By martial artist standards, that was actually a rather small meal.
After they finished eating, Mira cleaned the table and washed the dishes.
Xavier rested for a while. Not long afterward, someone knocked on the door.
Xavier opened it and found Marcus Reed standing outside with Clara Bennett.
"Xavier," Marcus said, grinning.
"Ready to go?" he asked. Xavier nodded.
The government had assigned both of them jobs as well. Marcus had been assigned to work at one of the major academies, while Clara had received a position at another academy located nearby, where she would work as a librarian.
Marcus immediately began talking as they set off.
"Do you know what I found out?" he asked.
"What?" Xavier asked, glancing at him.
"It seems most of the people who successfully found spouses through the matchmaking program have been assigned to the major academies," Marcus said, sounding pleased with the arrangement.
"And honestly, we got lucky," he added.
"The work isn’t supposed to be difficult, and the government pays academy employees pretty well," he continued.
"There’s another reason these places are so valuable," he said, having clearly done his research.
"Advanced magical academies have huge mana gathering formations throughout their campuses. The mana concentration is much higher than normal, so the students can train much more efficiently," he said, looking excited.
"And apparently, academy staff members sometimes benefit from being around those formations for long periods," he added.
Xavier raised an eyebrow.
"Some of them have even awakened magical abilities after working there for a while," Marcus said, lowering his voice.
He looked at his own hands.
"Do you think I might have a chance?" he asked.
"A chance at becoming a mage?" Xavier asked, smiling.
"Exactly!" Marcus said, his eyes lighting up.
"If I actually awaken a magical affinity, that would completely change my life," he said.
Then he remembered something and laughed.
"Besides, Clara is already a One Star Body Tempering martial artist," he said.
He rubbed his legs with an exaggerated grimace.
"You really have no idea how strong martial artists are," he said as if relishing a memory.
Clara on the other hand immediately understood what he was trying to drive at and immediately her cheeks flushed red.
"Marcus!" Clara said, immediately looking at him.
"What?" he asked
"Come on, that’s our privacy." She winced shyly
Marcus who usually seemed clueless and would always want to whatever his excited body and mind wished him to
"Come on, Clara. I’m only telling him the truth, you were impressive last night. Thinking about it now makes me feel giddy," Marcus said, chuckling. Clara on the other hand didn’t realize when she broke into a shy smile.
Marcus laughed at her embarrassment before finally becoming a little more serious.
"There’s just one thing I’m worried about," he said.
"What?" Xavier asked, looking over.
"We’ve been assigned to these academies, but that doesn’t mean we’ll automatically be allowed to stay," Marcus said, sighing.
"There’s an assessment we have to pass first," he added.
"If we fail, the government will simply transfer us to another position," He clenched his fist. "I really do hope we pass, Xavier. I have lots of plans after becoming a full time employee there."
Marcus continued talking throughout most of the journey.
Xavier listened quietly, occasionally smiling at his friend’s endless stream of excitement.
Meanwhile in his head, he was hoping they don’t flop whatever they test they need to pass.
He has his own reasons sticking to the academy. And for the sake of Mira, it has to work.
A few hours later, the three of them finally arrived at Arcadia Academy.
