Chapter 70: Chapter 70 | Through Her Hands!

She looked at her arm.

She ran it again.

The signal made it to the same point as the first — one increment past the usual cutoff — and dropped again.

She stood with it for a moment.

She did not say anything else.

She ran the form a third time.

Same result. Consistent. One increment further. Then the drop.

She lowered her arm.

She looked at the window.

"That’s new," she said. Not excited. Not careful. Just noting it. Precise.

"Yes," Kai said.

"It’ll be further tomorrow," she said.

"Probably," he said.

She looked at the window for a while.

Then she said, still to the window: "I used to clear the canyon dungeon and come home and run the form for two hours. Just to feel it working. I liked how it felt when the signal was clean all the way through." A pause. "I forgot what that felt like. I’ve been running an incomplete form for so long I forgot what the complete one feels like."

Kai looked at her.

She was not asking for anything. She was just — saying it. For the first time.

"You’ll remember," he said.

She was quiet for a moment.

Then she turned her chair toward the kitchen.

"Breakfast," she said. In the voice that meant the conversation was done and she was satisfied with where it ended.

He got up and made breakfast.

—----

Morning.

Mira came out seven minutes after Shira. She found her chair. Sat.

The board came up before she picked up her spoon.

How far today.

He looked at her.

The form, she wrote. How far did the signal get.

He looked at Shira.

Shira was eating. Looking at her bowl. The line of her jaw had the particular quality of someone who was not going to contribute to this conversation but was listening to every word.

"Further than yesterday," Kai said. "One increment past the usual cutoff."

Mira wrote: I know. I heard it.

He looked at her.

"You heard the difference," he said.

The sound of the form changes when the signal gets further, she wrote. The air displacement changes. I’ve been tracking it.

He looked at Shira.

Shira was still looking at her bowl.

"She heard it," Kai said.

"I heard," Shira said.

A pause.

Mira’s board: Forty-three mornings. Today was the first one that sounded different.

Shira set her spoon down.

She looked at the table.

Then she picked her spoon back up and ate.

But the line of her jaw had changed. The tight-held quality gone. Something quieter in its place.

Mira lowered the board and ate.

Kai drank his tea.

’Both of them,’ he thought. ’Mira has been tracking the sound of the form through the wall every morning. Shira has been running the form every morning. They’ve been in the same rhythm for forty-three days without saying so.’

He ate his breakfast.

—-----

He spent the morning on the testimony documentation.

Han Dori had sent the witness statement framework — what the junior technician’s testimony needed to cover, how it needed to be recorded to meet hero authority evidentiary standards. Kai read through it and made notes.

He was halfway through the second section when he felt it.

Through the wall. Mira’s room. Something in her rhythm changed.

Not distress. Not pain. Something different — a quality he had not felt from her before. A stillness inside the stillness. Like someone who had been sitting quietly and then become very quiet in a different way.

He expanded the Resonance Echo.

She was not using the audio reader. No music. No speech playback.

She was — doing something with sound.

He focused the Echo more precisely.

A frequency. Not her Gift’s base note. Not the vocal cord activation he tracked every evening. Something originating from outside her — a frequency she was producing with her body but not her voice.

He frowned.

’What is that,’ he thought.

He focused harder.

It was coming from her hands. The specific resonance of her palms pressed flat against a surface — the floor or the wall — and vibrating at a controlled frequency. Her Gift’s base note but inverted, pushed outward through her skin rather than produced vocally.

He sat very still.

’She’s using the Resonance Gift through her hands,’ he thought. ’Not her voice. She can’t use her voice — the vocal cords are damaged. But the Resonance Gift is a frequency Gift. It doesn’t have to originate from the throat. She’s found a different channel.’

The frequency was faint. Barely there. At the edge of what the Resonance Echo could detect.

But it was there.

And it was consistent.

She held it for forty seconds. Then it stopped.

Silence.

He looked at the wall.

He went back to the testimony documentation.

He said nothing.

—---

Lunch.

She came out looking exactly the same as she always did. Composed. Cane. Board in her lap.

She found her chair. Sat.

She ate without reaching for the marker for the first three minutes, which was unusual.

Then the board came up.

The testimony documentation. How is it going.

"Framework is solid," Kai said. "Han Dori’s evidentiary standards are detailed. Should take two more days to map our documentation against them."

She wrote: The witness. The junior technician. Is he safe.

"Han Dori has him in a secure location," Kai said. "Has been since the formal statement process started."

She lowered the board and ate.

Shira said, to her bowl: "The Ashford family will know the filing is coming."

"Not the exact timing," Kai said. "But they’ll anticipate it eventually."

"When they do they’ll accelerate," she said.

"I know," Kai said. "That’s why the simultaneous filing matters. They can’t challenge something that hits two authorities at once."

Shira ate.

Mira’s board came up.

Thirteen days.

"Thirteen days," Kai confirmed.

She lowered the board.

She ate the rest of her lunch.

After she finished she sat for a moment without reaching for the board.

Then she reached for it.

She wrote something.

She held it up toward Kai. Slowly.

There is something I need to tell you.

He looked at the board.

He looked at her.

"Tell me," he said.

She held the marker.

She wrote carefully. More carefully than usual — each word placed before moving to the next.

She held it up.

This morning I tried something. I have been thinking about it for two weeks. Since the Sound Mapping arrived. When the Sound Mapping activated I realized the Resonance Gift is a frequency ability. Not a vocal ability. The voice is the delivery mechanism but the frequency itself can be generated through any surface that resonates. This morning I pressed my palms to the floor and I tried to generate the base frequency through my hands instead of my throat.
