Chapter 73: Chapter 73 | Both Things Were True!

She held the board.

Then she wrote one more line.

I could feel it more on the fourth. Not just produce it. Feel it.

He read that.

He read it again.

"You felt your own Gift frequency," he said.

Yes, she wrote. Faintly. But yes.

The table was quiet.

Shira had stopped eating.

She was looking at the table. Not at Mira, not at Kai. At the table. The particular quality of someone letting something very large settle before responding to it.

Kai looked at Mira.

She was looking at the space between them. The board was in her lap. The marker was capped.

"That’s significant," he said.

I know, she wrote.

"The Gift isn’t just producing frequency," he said. "You’re receiving it. The channel is running both ways."

Yes, she wrote. That’s what it felt like.

He sat with that.

’The Resonance Gift is a frequency ability,’ he thought. ’Send and receive. She could always do both — she used to map spaces with it, read frequencies from other sources, feel the Resonance node in the dungeon. The damage closed the sending pathway. But if the tactile channel is opening the sending pathway — even at three percent — the receiving pathway might be waking up too.’

"The Sound Mapping," he said. "Your second awakening. You can map spaces through sound. Is that the receiving pathway?"

She held the board.

She looked at him.

She wrote: I thought it was a compensatory ability. Separate from the Gift.

"It might not be," he said. "The Resonance Gift receives and sends frequency. The Sound Mapping receives. The tactile channel sends. Both at low capacity. Both the same Gift."

She did not write anything for a long moment.

Then: The Gift isn’t damaged. The primary channel is damaged. The ability itself is intact.

"That’s my read," he said.

She held the board.

She held it for a long time.

Then she lowered it.

She ate.

Shira picked up her spoon and ate.

Kai ate.

The table was quiet. The very full kind of quiet. The kind that had several large things in it and nobody needed to name them because all three of them could feel the weight.

=====

After lunch he went to Mira’s door.

Three knocks.

It opened.

She had the board ready but she had not written anything yet. She was standing with the marker uncapped like she had been waiting to write something but had not decided what.

He said: "The clinic is Friday. I want to tell Dr. Tessa about the tactile resonance before the session."

She wrote: Yes.

"She should know what to look for," he said.

She wrote: Ask her about the relationship between the Sound Mapping and the Gift channel. Whether they’re the same pathway or separate.

"I will," he said.

She held the marker.

She wrote something slowly. She held the board up.

When you told me the Gift wasn’t damaged — just the primary channel. Did you believe that or were you saying it to help.

He looked at the board.

He looked at her.

"Both," he said.

She held the board.

He said: "I believed it. But I also knew it would matter to you. Both things were true."

She looked at the space between them.

She wrote: That’s a good answer.

"It’s an honest one," he said.

She lowered the board.

She started to close the door.

She stopped.

She held the board up one more time.

It said: Ten days.

"Ten days," he confirmed.

I’ll be ready, she wrote.

She closed the door.

He stood in the hallway.

He pressed his palm to the wall.

Both rhythms. Both present. Mira’s rhythm had the particular quality of someone who had received something large and was integrating it carefully — not excited, not overwhelmed. Thoughtful. Processing with the same precision she brought to everything.

Shira’s rhythm from the living room — she was at the window. The deliberate quality. But today there was something different underneath it. The quality from this morning’s conversation — the floor still feels the same — sitting alongside the quality from the table. Four beats. The flicker holding. Signal that goes further every day whether she can feel it or not.

He went to the couch.

He sat.

He pressed both palms flat.

’Ten days,’ he thought. ’Evidence chain complete. Location data ready. Testimony secured. Witness protected. Filing coordinated.’

’Ten days and then the Ashford family faces what they built.’

He looked at the ceiling.

He thought about the wind-type B-rank provisional who was in the deeper passage. The acoustic-type support who knew what the node meant. Han Dori’s colleague. All the names that would go into the filing.

’They’ll be named,’ he thought. ’All of them. In the record. Where it stays.’

He closed the notebook.

====

Evening.

Dinner was quiet and good.

After the dishes Kai sat on the couch.

Both wives in their rooms.

He waited.

Shira’s room — the form again. Ten in the evening, the second night she had run it at this hour. Signal to the cutoff, reduced rotation, the flicker arriving. She held it. Four beats. Five.

Five.

He pressed his palm harder to the cushion.

’Five,’ he thought. ’One more than this morning.’

She ran it a second time. Five beats again. Consistent.

She stopped.

She settled into bed.

Mira’s room — the audio reader starting. Music.

She was into the first phrase within twenty seconds of the music beginning.

Twenty-four seconds. Let it end.

Second phrase — twenty-eight.

Third — thirty-three.

Fourth — thirty-one.

Fifth — thirty-six.

Sixth — thirty-eight.

She paused.

Seventh phrase.

He had never felt her attempt seven.

She held it for thirty-four seconds and let it end naturally.

She did not start an eighth.

But seven.

Then the audio reader shifted and the tactile resonance began — the sequential session. Four attempts in sequence.

First: fifty-five seconds.

Second: sixty-one.

Third: sixty-seven.

Fourth: seventy-two.

’Seventy-two,’ he thought. ’This morning’s best was sixty-seven. She improved within a session and then improved the session baseline in one day.’

The system chimed.

『 INVESTMENT RETURN — THURSDAY. 』

『 FINANCIAL BREAKDOWN: 』 『 Specialty ingredients Day 29 — both rotations: 580 coins queued. 』 『 Rehabilitation clinic — tomorrow’s session: 138,000 coins queued. 』

『 NON-FINANCIAL RETURN: 』 『 Nerve Sense — intra-session signal quality tracking unlocked. Host can now read improvement within a single practice session, not only day-over-day. 』 『 Gale Strike Echo — Level 3 advancing. Rotation initiation time down to 0.4 seconds from standing start. 』 『 Resonance Echo — Level 2 fully active. Tactile resonance tracking confirmed. Host can read Mira Elys’s palm-frequency output in real time including duration, amplitude, and receiving-channel activation. 』

『 Bond Level — Shira Voss: 2.5 / 10. 』 『 Bond Level — Mira Elys: 2.5 / 10. 』

『 The system notes: 』 『 This morning Mira Elys felt her own Gift frequency for the first time since the incident. 』 『 Not produced it. Felt it. The channel running both ways. 』 『 Three years of probable used as certain. 』 『 This morning she felt the frequency and knew the certain was wrong. 』 『 The system has logged 847 investment events since the W.I.A. activated. 』 『 This one is logged differently. 』 『 Not because it is the largest. It is not the largest. 』 『 Because it is the one where Mira Elys asked: did you believe that or were you saying it to help. 』 『 And Host said: both. Both things were true. 』 『 The system notes that this is the first time a wife has asked Kai Renmei a question about his own interior and he answered it honestly without redirecting. 』 『 847 events. This is the first one. 』 『 The system notes it. 』

Kai read it.

He read the last section twice.

He put the phone down.

’847 events,’ he thought. ’First time.’

He lay back on the couch.

Both rhythms steady under his hands.

Through the wall — Shira’s breathing, slow and even. Asleep.

Through Mira’s door — still. The audio reader had finished. The tactile resonance had finished. She was still awake — her rhythm had the awake quality, the thinking quality. Processing the day.

He lay there.

He thought about the question she had asked through the door.

When you told me the Gift wasn’t damaged — just the primary channel. Did you believe that or were you saying it to help.

He thought about his answer.

Both. Both things were true.

He thought about seventy-two seconds. Seven phrases. Five beats.

’Both things were true,’ he thought. ’They still are.’

He closed his eyes.

He fell asleep before Mira’s rhythm shifted toward sleep.
