That evening.

Emeric found her in the study room.

She sat at the writing desk. The book of poems open before her. The windows were bare. The curtains had been stripped. The room was transformed.

He stopped in the doorway.

"You’ve been busy."

"I have."

He crossed to her and looked around. "This room... it’s cleaner than anywhere else in the Estate."

"Cleaner."

"Better."

She looked up at him and smiled.

"I found a book. Poems. The previous baroness. She wrote them."

He picked up the book. Flipped through. Read a few lines.

"She was lonely."

"She was trapped." Isolde paused. "Like me. Before you."

He set the book down. Knelt beside her chair.

"You’re not trapped anymore."

"I know." She touched his face. "But I understand her. I understand what it feels like to be caged."

He kissed her hand.

"You’re not caged. You’re here. With me. And we’re going to make this place ours."

She smiled.

"I know."

She was working diligently to also restore what they could.

He was grateful to have her.

The morning light was grey as it filtered into the bedroom.

He had studied this region and some of its strengths were the vast amount of farmland they had. But the problem was, not all of it was usable. The biggest issue was the poor water system and the marsh lands.

This left very little area to farm.

If he could tackle that; it would be very helpful to the people.

After breakfast, he bid his farewell to Isolde and headed out.

Emeric stood at the edge of the marshlands. His boots sank into the mud. The smell of rot and stagnant water filled his nostrils. Beyond him—acres of useless land. Waterlogged. Overgrown. Dead.

Graves stood beside him. The old butler’s face was unreadable.

"This is the problem, my lord."

"I can see that."

"The previous baron tried to farm it. Twice. The water returned. The crops drowned. He gave up."

Emeric knelt. Scooped up a handful of mud. Let it run through his fingers.

"The water comes from somewhere."

"The river, my lord. It floods every spring. The land never dries."

"And if we dug trenches? Redirected the water?"

Graves paused. "That would require labor. A great deal of it."

"Why hasn’t anyone tried that?"

"The previous baron was ..." Graves trailed off.

"Cheap?" Emeric asked, a small amused smile crossing his face.

Graves may have smiled but Emeric would never know.

Emeric stood. Wiped his hands on his trousers.

"Then we have labor."

He had an idea for what he could do with the extra source of water but this had to be done first.

He needed to fix this. But he didn’t know how.

He reached for the system.

[ASSESSMENT COMPLETE.]

[SOLUTION IDENTIFIED: TRENCH DRAINAGE SYSTEM WITH IRRIGATION POOLS]

[SKILL UNLOCKED: TERRAIN SENSE (PASSIVE)]

[RANK: E]

[DESCRIPTION: You can now perceive the natural flow of water, soil composition, and land elevation within a 500-foot radius. This skill allows you to identify the most efficient paths for drainage, irrigation, and construction. Effectiveness scales with Tier and proximity.]

[SYSTEM NOTE: THE LAND CAN BE SAVED. THE PLAN IS SIMPLE.]

—

Emeric closed his eyes. The skill activated.

He saw it.

The land stretched before him—not as a useless marsh, but as a puzzle. Water flowed from the river, flooding the fields every spring. The soil was rich beneath the water. The elevation was uneven. The water had nowhere to go.

But it could.

He opened his eyes. Turned to Graves.

"Bring me parchment. A quill."

Commander Gaius was not pleased.

He stood in the open yard, arms crossed and his face held like stone. Lieutenant Ashe beside him.

Emeric stood across from them with Graves by his side.

This was not going to go well.

"You want my men to dig trenches."

"Yes."

"Trenches."

"Yes."

Gaius’ jaw tightened. "We are the Grey Cavalry. We are knights. We do not dig."

Emeric met his gaze.

"You are the Grey Cavalry. You are knights. You are also in service to this Estate. And this Estate needs those trenches."

Gaius stepped closer, his face clearly irritated. "This is beneath us."

"Then leave." Emeric’s voice was calm. "I’ll find someone else. But your men will be paid either way. The Crown allocated the funds. They’ll go to whoever does the work."

Gaius stared at him.

Emeric stared back, his expression unwavering.

The silence that followed was customarily uncomfortable.

Ashe shifted in his boots, unsure how to mediate the situation.

Then Gaius spoke.

"How many days?"

"It depends. Until the water is redirected."

He turned and walked away. Lieutenant Ashe lingered. Looked at Emeric. Nodded. Just once. Then followed.

THE PLAN — EXPLAINED

- The river floods every spring

- Water has nowhere to drain

- The land stays waterlogged year-round

- Crops drown before they can grow

The Solution:

- Dig a series of trenches to redirect the floodwater

- Channel the water to two large pools on either side of the farmland

- The pools serve as irrigation reservoirs during dry months

- The drained land becomes farmable

- Future goal: Build a dam upstream to control the river permanently

The Trench System:

| Trench | Purpose | Location |

| Primary Trench| Redirects main floodwater from the river | Northern edge of marshland |

| Secondary Trenches| Collects residual water from the fields | Throughout the marshland |

| Drainage Channels | Carries water to the pools | Eastern and western edges |

| Irrigation Channels| Distributes water during dry months | Southern edge, near farmland |

Within a few minutes, the knights had gathered at the edge of the land. Commander Gaius and Lieutenant Ashe led the way.

A few of the villagers who had come to watch what was happening. No one had come to the marshland in years. It was useless. Emeric had decided he would show that he could make their lives better with action instead of empty words.
